Isolation of usutu virus in Germany.Usutu virus (USUV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that emerged 2001 in Austria and caused deaths in wild birds. In Germany, 70,378 female mosquitoes were captured in 2009 and 2010 and assayed for USUV. Virus was isolated in cell culture from one pool of Culex pipiens pipiens mosquitoes trapped exclusively in August 2010 in Weinheim, Germany. Subsequent phylogenetic analysis demonstrated a close relationship between the isolated USUV strain from Germany and a USUV strain from Austria, which was d ...201121896821
nationwide inventory of mosquito biodiversity (diptera: culicidae) in belgium, europe.to advance our restricted knowledge on mosquito biodiversity and distribution in belgium, a national inventory started in 2007 (modirisk) based on a random selection of 936 collection points in three main environmental types: urban, rural and natural areas. additionally, 64 sites were selected because of the risk of importing a vector or pathogen in these sites. each site was sampled once between may and october 2007 and once in 2008 using mosquito magnet liberty plus traps. diversity in pre-def ...201222971463
current status of invasive mosquito surveillance in the uk.non-native invasive mosquitoes have for many years made incursions into europe, and are now established in many european countries. the continued european importation of potential vectors and their expansion within europe increases their potential for importation and establishment in the uk. coupled with increasing numbers of returning dengue and chikungunya infected travellers, the potential exists for transmission of vector borne disease in new regions.201526122427
impacts of the creation, expansion and management of english wetlands on mosquito presence and abundance - developing strategies for future disease mitigation.the incidence of mosquito-borne diseases is increasing in europe, partly due to the incursion of a number of invasive species known to be vectors of dengue and chikungunya viruses, but also due to the involvement of native species in the transmission of west nile virus and malaria. for some of these pathogens, there is a risk of the re-emergence of vector-borne diseases that were once widespread in europe, but declined partly due to large-scale land-drainage projects. some mosquito species explo ...201525889666
mosquitoes (diptera: culicidae) and their relevance as disease vectors in the city of vienna, austria.mosquitoes (diptera: culicidae) are important vectors for a wide range of pathogenic organisms. as large parts of the human population in developed countries live in cities, the occurrence of vector-borne diseases in urban areas is of particular interest for epidemiologists and public health authorities. in this study, we investigated the mosquito occurrence in the city of vienna, austria, in order to estimate the risk of transmission of mosquito-borne diseases. mosquitoes were captured using di ...201425468380
european surveillance for west nile virus in mosquito populations.a wide range of arthropod-borne viruses threaten both human and animal health either through their presence in europe or through risk of introduction. prominent among these is west nile virus (wnv), primarily an avian virus, which has caused multiple outbreaks associated with human and equine mortality. endemic outbreaks of west nile fever have been reported in italy, greece, france, romania, hungary, russia and spain, with further spread expected. most outbreaks in western europe have been due ...201324157510
lack of evidence for the presence of mosquito-borne arboviruses in the upper rhine valley, germany, in 1999 to 2000. 201020592140
monitoring of west nile virus in mosquitoes between 2011-2012 in hungary.west nile virus (wnv) is a widely distributed mosquito-borne flavivirus. wnv strains are classified into several genetic lineages on the basis of phylogenetic differences. whereas lineage 1 viruses are distributed worldwide, lineage 2 wnv was first detected outside of africa in hungary in 2004. since then, wnv-associated disease and mortality in animal and human hosts have been documented periodically in hungary. after the first detection of wnv from a pool of culex pipiens mosquitoes in 2010, s ...025229703
circulation of dirofilaria repens and dirofilaria immitis in moldova.over the last two decades, a significant spread of dirofilariasis has been observed in eastern and central europe. however, data on the circulation of dirofilaria spp. in moldova were absent although direct neighbor states reported high incidence rates of human dirofilariasis.201627912786
molecular species identification, host preference and detection of myxoma virus in the anopheles maculipennis complex (diptera: culicidae) in southern england, uk.determining the host feeding patterns of mosquitoes by identifying the origin of their blood-meals is an important part of understanding the role of vector species in current and future disease transmission cycles. collecting large numbers of blood-fed mosquitoes from the field is difficult, therefore it is important to maximise the information obtained from each specimen. this study aimed to use mosquito genome sequence to identify the species within anopheles maculipennis sensu lato (an. macul ...201526271277
lack of evidence for the presence of schmallenberg virus in mosquitoes in germany, 2011.in 2011, a novel orthobunyavirus of the simbu serogroup was discovered near the german-dutch border and named schmallenberg virus (sbv). so far, sbv genome has been detected in various field-collected culicoides species; however, other members of the simbu serogroup are also transmitted by mosquitoes.201425174354
mosquitoes (diptera: culicidae) of metropolitan hamburg, germany.in europe, mosquito-related public health concerns are growing due to the increasing spread of invasive mosquito species and the recent emergence of mosquito-borne arboviruses. a vital backbone in the assessment of these issues is detailed knowledge of the mosquito fauna, i.e. regional mosquito inventories. it was therefore decided to intensify nationwide investigations on the occurrence and distribution of mosquitoes in germany in order to update old records and to detect possible faunal change ...201424870250
francisella tularensis subspecies holarctica occurs in swedish mosquitoes, persists through the developmental stages of laboratory-infected mosquitoes and is transmissible during blood feeding.in sweden, mosquitoes are considered the major vectors of the bacterium francisella tularensis subsp. holarctica, which causes tularaemia. the aim of this study was to investigate whether mosquitoes acquire the bacterium as aquatic larvae and transmit the disease as adults. mosquitoes sampled in a swedish area where tularaemia is endemic (örebro) were positive for the presence of f. tularensis deoxyribonucleic acid throughout the summer. presence of the clinically relevant f. tularensis subsp. h ...201324057273
host-feeding patterns of mosquito species in germany.mosquito-borne pathogens are of growing importance in many countries of europe including germany. at the same time, the transmission cycles of most mosquito-borne pathogens (e.g. viruses or filarial parasites) are not completely understood. there is especially a lack of knowledge about the vector capacity of the different mosquito species, which is strongly influenced by their host-feeding patterns. while this kind of information is important to identify the relevant vector species, e.g. to dire ...201627259984
[addition to the fauna of mosquitoes of the family culicidae (diptera) of the novgorod region].mosquitoes of 26 species of the family culicidae were found in the novgorod province. during the researches in 1996-2001, five new species for the region were found: aedes annulipes, ae. impiger, ae. riparius riparius, ae. rossicus and culex torrentium.200312815812
experimental infection and transmission competence of sindbis virus in culex torrentium and culex pipiens mosquitoes from northern sweden.sindbis virus (sinv) is a mosquito-borne alphavirus known to infect birds and cause intermittent outbreaks among humans in fenno-scandia. in sweden, the endemic area has mainly been in central sweden. recently, sinv infections have emerged to northern sweden, but the vectorial efficiency for sinv of mosquito species in this northern region has not yet been ascertained.201930300110
diversity and seasonal abundances of mosquitoes at potential arboviral transmission sites in two different climate zones in switzerland.pathogens of medical or veterinary significance that are transmitted by mosquitoes (diptera: culicidae) are (re-)emerging in europe [e.g. west nile virus (wnv), dirofilaria nematodes]. little is known about the spatiotemporal abundances of mosquito species in switzerland. therefore, mosquito population dynamics were investigated, focusing on areas of risk for sylvatic or synanthropic transmission, such as natural sites and suburban sites on either side of the alpine crest. repeated collections w ...201829424446
new country records for mosquito species in greece.a study of the literature and mosquito collections in greece has yielded 3 species that have not been recorded from greece. they are aedes annulipes, aedes berlandi, and culex pusillus. notes on their recognition and geographic distribution are also given.19937907359
[species composition and ecological peculiarities of the blood-sucking mosquito genus ochlerotatus (cantans and dorsalis species groups) (diptera, culicidae) in the novgorod region].seven mosquito species of the genus ochlerotatus ("cantans" and "dorsalis" species groups, family culicidae) were found in the novgorod region as a result of our field investigations, which have been carried out in 1996-2004. one species, ochlerotatus annulipes, was for the first time recorded in the novgorod region. distribution, biotopic and seasonal preferences of all discovered species are considered.200717285755

identification of belgian mosquito species (diptera: culicidae) by dna barcoding.since its introduction in 2003, dna barcoding has proven to be a promising method for the identification of many taxa, including mosquitoes (diptera: culicidae). many mosquito species are potential vectors of pathogens, and correct identification in all life stages is essential for effective mosquito monitoring and control. to use dna barcoding for species identification, a reliable and comprehensive reference database of verified dna sequences is required. hence, dna sequence diversity of mosqu ...201525143182
circulation of dirofilaria repens, setaria tundra, and onchocercidae species in hungary during the period 2011-2013.dirofilaria repens and recently dirofilaria immitis are known to be endemic in hungary. since there is no related research on dirofilaria carrier mosquito species from hungary, we conducted a three-year mosquito surveillance study between 2011 and 2013. during the study period we examined 23,139 female mosquitoes with a generic filaria-specific taqman pcr assay, and characterized them by sequencing a 500 bp segment of 12s rrna. an important result of our study was the detection of setaria tundra ...201526412142
high prevalence and lineage diversity of avian malaria in wild populations of great tits (parus major) and mosquitoes (culex pipiens).avian malaria studies have taken a prominent place in different aspects of evolutionary ecology. despite a recent interest in the role of vectors within the complex interaction system of the malaria parasite, they have largely been ignored in most epidemiological studies. epidemiology of the disease is however strongly related to the vector's ecology and behaviour, and there is a need for basic investigations to obtain a better picture of the natural associations between plasmodium lineages, vec ...201222506060
