beilong virus, a novel paramyxovirus with the largest genome of non-segmented negative-stranded rna viruses.during a subtraction study on gene expression in human kidney mesangial cells (hmcs), cdna clones with sequence homology to paramyxovirus p, m and f genes were isolated. subsequent investigation revealed that this particular hmc line was infected with a previously unknown paramyxovirus. here, we report the isolation and genome characterization of this new virus, now named beilong virus (bev). the genome of bev is 19,212 nucleotides (nt) in length and is the largest among all known members of the ...200616325221
genetic analysis of j-virus and beilong virus using minireplicons.j-virus (jpv), isolated from wild mice in australia, and beilong virus (beipv), originally isolated from human mesangial cells in china and subsequently detected in rat mesangial cells, represent a new group of paramyxoviruses which have exceptionally large genomes (>19 kb) and contain more than six transcriptional units. in this study, minireplicons were employed to assess the taxonomic status of jpv and beipv. our results demonstrated that, whilst the genome replication machineries of jpv and ...200717397895
Complete genome sequence of a novel paramyxovirus, tailam virus, discovered in sikkim rats.We discovered a novel paramyxovirus, Tailam virus, of subfamily Paramyxovirinae, in the kidneys and spleens of Sikkim rats. The coding potential of its genome (3'-N-P/V/C-M-F-SH-TM-G-L-5') is similar to those of Beilong virus and J virus, with putative proteins having 59.1 to 94.4% and 23.8 to 80.1% amino acid identities to those of Beilong virus and J virus, respectively.201122106385
the immune evasion function of j and beilong virus v proteins is distinct from that of other paramyxoviruses, consistent with their inclusion in the proposed genus jeilongvirus.ifn-antagonist function is a major determinant of pathogenicity and cross-species infection by viruses, but remains poorly defined for many potentially zoonotic viruses resident in animal species. the paramyxovirus family contains several zoonotic viruses, including highly pathogenic viruses such as nipah virus and hendra virus, and an increasing number of largely uncharacterized animal viruses. here, we report the characterization of ifn antagonism by the rodent viruses j virus (jpv) and beilon ...201626703878
identification of an unclassified paramyxovirus in coleura afra: a potential case of host specificity.bats are known to harbor multiple paramyxoviruses. despite the creation of two new genera, aquaparamyxovirus and ferlavirus, to accommodate this increasing diversity, several recently isolated or characterized viruses remain unclassified beyond the subfamily level. in the present study, among 985 bats belonging to 6 species sampled in the belinga caves of gabon, rna of an unclassified paramyxovirus (belinga bat virus, belpv) was discovered in 14 african sheath-tailed bats (coleura afra), one of ...201425551455
comparative genome and evolutionary analysis of naturally occurring beilong virus in brown and black rats.recently, we reported the presence of beilong virus in spleen and kidney samples of brown rats and black rats, suggesting that these rodents could be natural reservoirs of beilong virus. in this study, four genomes of beilong virus from brown rats and black rats were sequenced. similar to the beilong virus genome sequenced from kidney mesangial cell line culture, those of j-virus from house mouse and tailam virus from sikkim rats, these four genomes from naturally occurring beilong virus also co ...201627663719
preliminary characterisation of pentlands paramyxovirus-1, -2 and -3, three new paramyxoviruses of rodents.a paramyxovirus was discovered by chance during the primary culture of grey squirrel (sciurus carolinensis) kidney cells from the uk. amplification, sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of part of the genome encoding a region of the rna polymerase (l gene) confirmed that the virus was a member of the paramyxovirinae subfamily, but that it did not partition with any of the currently recognised paramyxovirus genera and instead segregated with the unclassified rodent viruses, j-virus, beilong virus ...201424613080
discovery and genome characterization of three new jeilongviruses, a lineage of paramyxoviruses characterized by their unique membrane proteins.in the past decade, many new paramyxoviruses that do not belong to any of the seven established genera in the family paramyxoviridae have been discovered. amongst them are j-virus (jpv), beilong virus (beipv) and tailam virus (tlmpv), three paramyxovirus species found in rodents. based on their similarities, it has been suggested that these viruses should compose a new genus, tentatively called 'jeilongvirus'.201830115009
distribution and characteristics of beilong virus among wild rodents and shrews in china.beilong virus (beiv), a member of the newly recognized genus jeilongvirus of family paramyxoviridae, has been reported with limited geographic and host scopes, only in hongkong, china and from two rat species. here, by next-generation sequencing (ngs) on dominant wild small animal species in 4 provinces in china, we obtained a complete sequence of beiv strain from rattus norvegicus in guangdong, neighboring hongkong, china. we then made an expanded epidemiological investigation in 11 provinces t ...202032634600
