novel steroidal saponins from dioscorea esculenta (togedokoro).fifteen steroidal saponins 1-15, which include 4 furostanol glycosides 1-3 and 15, and 11 spirostanol glycosides 4-14, were isolated from the tubers and leaves of lesser yam (dioscorea esculenta, togedokoro). their structures were identified by nuclear magnetic resonance and liquid chromatography mass spectroscopy. four steroidal saponins 9, 11, 14, and 15 were found to be novel compounds.201729027500

permanent genetic resources added to molecular ecology resources database 1 june 2010 - 31 july 2010.this article documents the addition of 205 microsatellite marker loci to the molecular ecology resources database. loci were developed for the following species: bagassa guianensis, bulweria bulwerii, camelus bactrianus, chaenogobius annularis, creontiades dilutus, diachasmimorpha tryoni, dioscorea alata, euhrychiopsis lecontei, gmelina arborea, haliotis discus hannai, hirtella physophora, melanaphis sacchari, munida isos, thaumastocoris peregrinus and tuberolachnus salignus. these loci were cro ...201021565125
hypolipidaemic effect of chemically different mucilages in rats: a comparative study.different classes of fibres differ in their potential to lower lipid levels. in order to examine how chemically diverse fibres differ in their hypolipidaemic activity, mucilages of varying chemical composition isolated from three different sources were administered to experimental animals and the metabolism of lipids and lipoproteins was studied. the mucilages used were a galactomannan isolated from fenugreek (trigonella foenum-graecum) seeds, a glucomannan from dioscorea esculenta tubers and an ...200617181876
[sweet potato in pre-columbian polynesia--an overview].an overview is presented on the reports available so far on sweet potato, ipomoea batatas, cultivated widely in polynesia in the pre-columbian era, with reference to possible ways and presumptive dates of transfer from the americas to polynesia, such as (1) polynesian navigators' travel to peru, (2) peruvian fishermen's drift westward, (3) vessel drift, (4) seed drift, (5) root-tuber drift, and (6) transport by birds. the author supports the case (1) as most plausible. ganshu or ganchu described ...200617139158
enzyme inhibitors in tuber crops and their thermal stability.tubers of cassava (manihot esculenta), yams (dioscorea esculenta), aroids (amorphophallus campanulatus, colocasia esculenta, xanthosoma sagittfolium) and coleus (solenostemon rotundifolius) were screened for inhibitory activities against amylase, trypsin and chymotrypsin. coleus tuber possessed the highest anti-amylase activity, whereas colocasia tuber was the most potent source of anti-tryptic and anti-chymotryptic activity. xanthosoma tubers exhibited amylase inhibitory activity and amorphopha ...19958833431
peroxidase-polyphenol oxidase association in dioscorea esculenta.a crude enzyme extract from dioscorea esculenta var. fasiculata tissue subjected to ion exchange chromatography on deae-sephadex a-50 column. this procedure resolved the extract into two main protein peaks one of which eluted through the column relatively unbound while the other protein peak which remained bound to the column was eluted with 1.0 m nacl. both protein peaks contained polyphenol oxidase (ppo) and peroxidase (pod) activities. the non-binding protein peak was resolved by gel filtrati ...20099933963
dioscorea esculenta-induced increase in muscle sex steroid hormones is associated with enhanced insulin sensitivity in a type 2 diabetes rat model.the effects of chronic dioscorea esculenta administration and exercise training on muscle sex steroid hormone levels and insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes rats was assessed. twenty-week-old male otsuka long evans tokushima fatty (oletf) rats were assigned randomly to the control, d. esculenta treatment, d. esculenta with 5α-reductase inhibitor treatment, or the exercise training groups (running at 25 m/min for 1 h, 5 d/wk; n = 10 each group). eight weeks of d. esculenta treatment or exercise ...201727871063
efficacy of acupuncture for chronic asthma: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.although asthma symptoms can be temporarily controlled, it is recommended to use effective low-risk, non-drug strategies to constitute a significant advance in asthma management. acupuncture has been traditionally used to treat asthma; however, the evidence for the efficacy of this treatment is still lacking. previous clinical trials of acupuncture in treating asthma were limited by methodological defects; therefore, high-quality research is required.201526399399
preparation and application of carboxymethyl yam (dioscorea esculenta) starch.yam (dioscorea esculenta) starch was modified by carboxymethylation. the effect of reaction parameters, amount of sodium hydroxide (naoh), amount of sodium monochloroacetate (smca), and reaction time on the degree of substitution (ds) of carboxymethyl yam starch (cms), was studied using the box-behnken experimental design. physicochemical and potency to be a tablet disintegrant of cms were evaluated. cms with ds in the range of 0.08-0.19 were obtained. the results from regression analysis indica ...200919238555
carbohydrate metabolism in dioscorea esculenta (lour.) burk. tubers and curcuma longa l. rhizomes during two phases of dormancy.we have examined the changes in carbohydrate metabolism in food yam (dioscorea esculenta (lour.) burk.) tubers and in an economically important spice cum medicinal plant turmeric (curcuma longa l.) rhizomes under storage. both specimens showed varied levels of dormancy and sprouting appeared at the end of dormant period. harvested, fully matured tubers of yam and rhizomes of turmeric were stored in wooden boxes under the conditions of 28+/-2 degrees c temperature and 65-75% relative humidity (rh ...200717531451
