partial characterization of a novel gammaherpesvirus isolated from a european badger (meles meles).a herpesvirus causing a cytopathic effect was isolated from pulmonary fibroblast cultures established from a european badger (meles meles). a study was undertaken to classify and to assess some in-vitro growth characteristics of this virus. from a panel of 27 mammalian cell lines, in-vitro replication of the badger herpesvirus (badhv) was only demonstrated with a mink lung cell line, suggesting a high degree of host specificity. using pcr with degenerate primers, three independent fragments of t ...200212029147
detection of mustelid herpesvirus-1 infected european badgers (meles meles) in the british isles.the aim of this study was to assess the frequency of mustelid herpesvirus-1 (mushv-1) infection in free-ranging badgers (meles meles) in the british isles. a polymerase chain reaction assay was developed that detected mushv-1 dna in 95% (18/19) and 100% (10/10) of anticoagulant-treated blood samples collected from free-ranging badgers sampled in the southwest of england and the republic of ireland, respectively. an indirect immunoassay was also developed to detect mushv-1-specific immunoglobulin ...200415137494
Identification of a novel herpesvirus associated with cutaneous ulcers in a fisher (Martes pennanti). On December 8, 2008, a male fisher (Martes pennanti) housed in a quarantine enclosure at the St-Félicien Zoo was found dead with multiple skin ulcers on the muzzle and plantar pads. At necropsy, no major findings were found, and a specific cause of death was not determined microscopically. However, at the borders of ulcerated sites, there were increased numbers of koilocytes, with perinuclear vacuolation and nuclear enlargement. A pan-herpesvirus nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay was ...201121908360
mustelid herpesvirus-2, a novel herpes infection in northern sea otters (enhydra lutris kenyoni).oral ulcerations and plaques with epithelial eosinophilic intranuclear inclusions were observed in northern sea otters (enhydra lutris kenyoni) that died or were admitted for rehabilitation after the 1989 exxon valdez oil spill (evos) in alaska, usa. transmission electron microscopy demonstrated the presence of herpesviral virions. additionally, a serologic study from 2004 to 2005 found a high prevalence of exposure to a herpesvirus in live-captured otters. tissues from 29 otters after the evos ...201222247388
genital tract screening finds widespread infection with mustelid gammaherpesvirus 1 in the european badger ( meles meles).:  sexually transmitted diseases (stds) can be important drivers of population dynamics because of their negative effects on reproduction. however, screening for stds, especially in wildlife populations, is widely neglected. using the promiscuous, polygynandrous european badger ( meles meles) as a model, we investigated the presence and prevalence of herpesviruses (hvs) in a wild, high-density population and assessed potential differences in somatic fitness and female reproductive condition betw ...201829077546
effects of mustelid gammaherpesvirus 1 (musghv-1) reactivation in european badger (meles meles) genital tracts on reproductive fitness.reactivation of latent gammaherpesvirus in the genital tract can lead to reproductive failure in domestic animals. nevertheless, this pathophysiology has not received formal study in wild mammals. high prevalence of mustelid gammaherpesvirus 1 (musghv-1) dna detected in the genital tracts of european badgers (meles meles) implies that this common pathogen may be a sexual transmitted infection. here we used pcr to test musghv-1 dna prevalence in genital swabs collected from 144 wild badgers in ir ...202032962280
patterns of genital tract mustelid gammaherpesvirus 1 (musghv-1) reactivation are linked to stressors in european badgers (meles meles).gammaherpesvirus reactivation can promote diseases or impair reproduction. understanding reactivation patterns and associated risks of different stressors is therefore important. nevertheless, outside the laboratory or captive environment, studies on the effects of stress on gammaherpesvirus reactivation in wild mammals are lacking. here we used mustelid gammaherpesvirus 1 (musghv-1) infection in european badgers (meles meles) as a host-pathogen wildlife model to study the effects of a variety o ...202134064759
