leucocytozoonosis in canada geese at the seney national wildlife refuge.a history is given of the seney national wildlife refuge and the losses of goslings of canada geese (branta canadensis) recorded since inception of the refuge in 1935. since 1960, when more reliable data became available, losses have been estensive every 4 years. goslings deaths are attributed to the infection with leucocytozoon simondi. the blackfly (simulium innocens) is considered to be the prime vector in the transmission of this blood parasite to goslings.1975807752

leucocytozoon simondi infection in european and american eiders.an adult european eider (somateria mollissima mollissima) died at the st louis zoo and was found to be infected with numerous blood and tissue stages of leucocytozoon simondi. necropsy revealed massive air sac aspergillosis, but histologic examination revealed a diffusely distributed protozoon organism that was identified as l simondi. examination of tissues from a previously necropsied european eider and from 2 american eiders (somateria mollissima dresseri) that later died also revealed eviden ...19836417090
blood parasites of trumpeter swans, olor buccinator (richardson), from alberta.a total of 75 trumpeter swans (olor buccinator (richardson) from the grande prairie region of alberta was examined for hematozoa; 26 (34.6%) swans were infected with haemoproteus nettionis. a single infection of leucocytozoon simondi and two of plasmodium circumflexum also were recorded. local, second year (sy) and adult (ahy) female swans had closely similar rates of hematozoan infection; the sy and ahy male swans had substantially higher infection rates than other subgroups.19817241706
nematocera (ceratopogonidae, psychodidae, simuliidae and culicidae) and control methods.the biology, veterinary importance and control of certain nematocera are described and discussed. culicoides spp. (family ceratopogonidae) transmit the arboviruses of bluetongue (bt), african horse sickness (ahs), bovine ephemeral fever (bef) and akabane. some other arboviruses have been isolated from these species, while fowl pox has been transmitted experimentally by culicoides. these insects are vectors of the parasitic protozoans leucocytozoon caulleryi and haemoproteus nettionis, and the pa ...19947711309
haemoproteus greineri in wood ducks from the atlantic flyway.thin smears of blood were examined from 157 wood ducks (aix sponsa) trapped at savannah national wildlife refuge (south carolina, usa) and harris neck national wildlife refuge (georgia, usa) during spring and summer, 1994 and 1995. thirteen wood ducks (8%) were infected with blood parasites. eleven of these birds were infected with haemoproteus nettionis, seven with leucocytozoon simondi, and five with unidentified microfilariae. additionally, eight wood ducks (5%) were infected with haemoproteu ...19979131576
hematozoa of waterfowl from michigan.two hundred eighteen and 127 wild waterfowl (anatidae) of five species were sampled from the kellogg biological station area (michigan, usa) during the summer (1 june to 24 august 1995) and fall (9 september to 8 october 1995), respectively. twelve (6%) of those sampled in summer and 13 (11%) sampled in the fall were infected with hemosporids. haemoproteus nettionis, haemoproteus greineri, and leucocytozoon simondi infected both summer and fall birds, with h. nettionis the most common (4% summer ...200011085442

incidence of malaria in a wintering population of canvasbacks (aythya valisineria) on chesapeake bay.canvasback ducks wintering on chesapeake bay had a 6% incidence of leucocytozoon simondi and 2% incidence of haemoproteus. subinoculation of whole blood into pekin ducklings produced a plasmodium infection rate of 31%. females were more frequently infected (12/22) than males (15/68). the parasite was identified as p. circumflexum.197016512153
relationships between circulating leucocytes and leucocytozoon simondi in mallard, anas platyrhynchos, ducklings.leucocytozoon simondi is an apicomplexan blood parasite of waterfowl that frequently causes significant mortality, and thus is expected to provoke a significant immune response in hosts. using blood smears collected in consecutive weeks from 30 wild-stock mallard, anas platyrhynchos, ducklings, we tested with repeated measures analyses for associations between leucocyte profiles and l. simondi infection intensities. with each of the five weeks of leucocyte profiles as response variables, we foun ...201020044017
blood parasites of blue-winged teal ( anas discors ) from two migratory corridors, in the southern usa.we collected 180 blue-winged teal ( anas discors ) in september and october 2002 from florida, us (n=100, representing the eastern migratory corridor) and the louisiana-texas, us, border (n=80, representing the western migratory corridor) and examined for blood parasites using thin heart-blood smears. leucocytozoon simondi, haemoproteus nettionis, and microfilariae were found in 16, 23, and 27 birds, respectively. prevalence of l. simondi and h. nettionis did not vary by migratory corridor, but ...201627285417

hematozoa of hatch-year common mergansers from michigan.fifty-five hatch-year common mergansers (mergus merganser) were sampled for hematozoa from douglas lake (michigan, usa) on 17 july 1995. forty-one (75%) were infected with hematozoa. haemoproteus greineri and leucocytozoon simondi were common, infecting 28 (51%) and 26 (47%) common mergansers, respectively. plasmodium circumflexum infected two (4%) birds. the common merganser is a new host record for h. greineri and p. circumflexum. intensity data indicate possible negative interspecific interac ...200111310899
hematozoa of wood ducks (aix sponsa) in missouri.we examined 371 wood ducks (aix sponsa) for hematozoa from two localities in missouri (usa) in 1989 and 1990. thirty-seven (10%) harbored one or more species of blood parasites. haemoproteus nettionis was the most common parasite, occurring in 36 (10%) of the birds. leucocytozoon simondi was found in two (0.5%) and microfilaria occurred in five (1%) of the wood ducks examined. infections were more prevalent in adults (18%) than in immature birds (2%). there was no difference in prevalence betwee ...19948151821
blood parasites of prairie anatids and their implication in waterfowl management in alberta and saskatchewan.information on the blood parasites occurring in 3,866 anatids of 14 species collected from five locations in alberta and saskatchewan during 1976-80 is summarized. an overall prevalence of 26% with avian hematozoa was recorded. leucocytozoon simondi was the most frequently encountered parasite, occurring in 17% of the ducks; haemoproteus nettionis was observed in 11% of the birds while plasmodium circumflexum and microfilariae (probably of splendidofilaria fallisensis) occurred in only 2% and le ...19826813511

leucocytozoonosis in canada geese in upper michigan,. 1. strain differences among geese from different localities.geographic variation in pathogenicity of leucocytozoon simondi in canada geese (branta canadensis maxima) was investigated by exposing goslings to natural infection at three locations in the upper peninsula of michigan. examination of blood smears and tissue sections revealed two patterns of development. hepatic schizogony and secondary megaloschizogony occurred in cells of the reticuloendothelial system, with round and elongate gametocytes, or only hepatic schizonts and round gametocytes. the e ...1978416231
