characterization of unusual bacteria isolated from respiratory secretions of cystic fibrosis patients and description of inquilinus limosus gen. nov., sp. nov.using a polyphasic approach (including cellular protein and fatty acid analysis, biochemical characterization, 16s ribosomal dna sequencing, and dna-dna hybridizations), we characterized 51 bacterial isolates recovered from respiratory secretions of cystic fibrosis (cf) patients. our analyses showed that 24 isolates belong to taxa that have so far not (or only rarely) been reported from cf patients. these taxa include acinetobacter sp., bordetella hinzii, burkholderia fungorum, comamonas testost ...200212037065
the evolution of inquilinism, host-plant use and mitochondrial substitution rates in tamalia gall aphids.we used mitochondrial dna data to infer phylogenies for 28 samples of gall-inducing tamalia aphids from 12 host-plant species, and for 17 samples of tamalia inquilinus, aphid 'inquilines' that obligately inhabit galls of the gall inducers and do not form their own galls. our phylogenetic analyses indicate that the inquilines are monophyletic and closely related to their host aphids. tamalia coweni aphids from different host plants were, with one exception, very closely related to one another. by ...200314632236
analysis of anal secretions from phlaeothripine thrips.the anal secretions of 16 phlaeothripine thrips species (thysanoptera: phlaeothripidae) were studied, including a reinvestigation of three species previously reported. a total of 37 components were detected, including hydrocarbons, acetates, terpenes, carboxylic acids, a quinone, an aromatic compound, and a pyranone compound. the secretions of all species were composed of some of these components, with xylaplothrips inquilinus possessing as many as 11 components. of these components, (z)-9-octad ...200415112732

clinical and microbiological features of inquilinus sp. isolates from five patients with cystic fibrosis.patients with cystic fibrosis (cf) may be colonized with unusual gram-negative bacilli whose identification is difficult and clinical impact unclear. we describe the clinical and microbiological features of five colonizations with organisms belonging to the recently described genus inquilinus in cf patients. isolates were identified from burkholderia cepacia selective medium by means of 16s rrna analysis. all of them were resistant to colistin, penicillins, cephalosporins, and monobactams but ex ...200516081934
diverse bacteria associated with root nodules of spontaneous legumes in tunisia and first report for nifh-like gene within the genera microbacterium and starkeya.we characterized 34 endophytic bacterial isolates associated to root nodules collected from spontaneous legumes in the arid zone of tunisia by 16s rdna polymerase chain reaction (pcr)-restriction fragment length polymorphism, whole cell protein sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (sds-page), 16s rdna and 16s-23s rdna internal transcribed spacer sequencing. phylogenetically, these isolates belong to the branches containing the genera inquilinus, bosea, rhodopseudomonas, para ...200616598639
early-onset prosthetic valve endocarditis caused by inquilinus sp.inquilinus is the newly described genus and has never been recognized as a cause of infective endocarditis. we report a case of early-onset prosthetic valve endocarditis caused by inquilinus sp. in a tetralogy of fallot patient who presented with heart failure. the bacterium was recovered from 11 consecutive blood cultures and identified by 16s rrna gene sequencing.200616854551
clonal analysis of inquilinus limosus isolates from six cystic fibrosis patients and specific serum antibody response.inquilinus limosus is a novel gram-negative bacterium of the subdivision alpha-proteobacteria recently found in the airways of patients with cystic fibrosis (cf). here, the authors report on the clinical courses of six cf patients colonized with i. limosus. five patients suffered from either an acute respiratory exacerbation or a progressive loss of pulmonary function, whereas one patient was in a stable clinical situation. this study focused on two aims: (i) the clonal analysis of i. limosus is ...200617005793
identification of diazotrophs in the culturable bacterial community associated with roots of lasiurus sindicus, a perennial grass of thar desert, india.lasiurus sindicus is a highly nutritive, drought-tolerant, perennial grass that is endemic to the thar desert of rajasthan, india. analysis of 16s rrna coding genes of the bacterial isolates enriched in nitrogen-free semisolid medium, from the surface-sterilized roots of l. sindicus, showed predominance of gram-negative over gram-positive bacteria. according to comparative sequence analysis of 16s rdna sequence data, gram-positive bacteria with low gc content (staphylococcus warneri and bacillus ...200717264993
exopolysaccharides produced by inquilinus limosus, a new pathogen of cystic fibrosis patients: novel structures with usual components.the major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with cystic fibrosis, an autosomal recessive disorder, is chronic microbial colonisation of the major airways that leads to exacerbation of pulmonary infection. several different microbes colonise cystic fibrosis lungs, and pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the most threatening, since the establishment of mucoid (alginate producing) strains is ultimately associated with the patient's death. very recently a new bacterium, named inquilinus limo ...200717719019

molecular detection of multiple emerging pathogens in sputa from cystic fibrosis patients.there is strong evidence that culture-based methods detect only a small proportion of bacteria present in the respiratory tracts of cystic fibrosis (cf) patients.200818682840
matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry for identification of nonfermenting gram-negative bacilli isolated from cystic fibrosis patients.the identification of nonfermenting gram-negative bacilli isolated from cystic fibrosis (cf) patients is usually achieved by using phenotype-based techniques and eventually molecular tools. these techniques remain time-consuming, expensive, and technically demanding. we used a method based on matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (maldi-tof-ms) for the identification of these bacteria. a set of reference strains belonging to 58 species of clinically relevan ...200818685005
low rates of pseudomonas aeruginosa misidentification in isolates from cystic fibrosis patients.pseudomonas aeruginosa is an important cause of pulmonary infection in cystic fibrosis (cf). its correct identification ensures effective patient management and infection control strategies. however, little is known about how often cf sputum isolates are falsely identified as p. aeruginosa. we used p. aeruginosa-specific duplex real-time pcr assays to determine if 2,267 p. aeruginosa sputum isolates from 561 cf patients were correctly identified by 17 australian clinical microbiology laboratorie ...200919261796
inhibition of cathelicidin activity by bacterial exopolysaccharides.the interaction of bacterial exopolysaccharides, produced by opportunistic lung pathogens, with antimicrobial peptides of the innate primate immune system was investigated. the exopolysaccharides were produced by pseudomonas aeruginosa, inquilinus limosus and clinical isolates of the burkholderia cepacia complex, bacteria that are all involved in lung infections of cystic fibrosis patients. the effects of the biological activities of three orthologous cathelicidins from homo sapiens sapiens, pon ...200919400793
mucoid inquilinus limosus in a young adult with cystic fibrosis.inquilinus limosus is a alpha-proteobacterium that has been recently isolate in the airways of cystic fibrosis (cf) patients. we report the isolation of a mucoid strain of i. limosus from the sputum of a 20-year-old male patient with cf over 1 year that was associated with the clinical, spirometric, and radiographic decline in a previously healthy patient.200919434691
eurocarecf quality assessment of diagnostic microbiology of cystic fibrosis isolates.the identification of microbial species from respiratory specimens and their susceptibility to antimicrobial agents are among the most important diagnostic measures of care for patients with cystic fibrosis (cf). under the umbrella of eurocarecf, two quality assurance trials of cf microbiology were performed in 2007 and 2008. nine formulations with cf bacterial isolates were dispatched. a total of 31/37 laboratories from 18/21 european countries participated in the 2007 and 2008 trials. the comm ...200919741077
