long-term effects of group-selection timber harvesting on abundance of forest birds.relatively few studies have examined the ecological effects of group-selection timber harvesting, and nearly all have been short-term and have lacked experimental manipulations that allow pre- and posttreatment comparisons. we have been documenting the effects of a group-selection timber harvest on bird abundance in a maine forest for 24 years (preharvest, 1983-1987; postharvest, 1988-2006). here we characterized the trends in bird abundance over the first 20 years of the study in the managed an ...200717883487
further investigations of the mite genus syringophiloidus kethley, 1970 (acariformes: syringophilidae) from north american passerines.four new syringophilid species of syringophiloidus kethley, 1970 are described from north american passerines: s. zonotrichia n. sp. from zonotrichia albicolis (gmelin) (emberizidae) on texas; s. jackowiaki n. sp. from poecile carolinensis (auduborn) (paridae) in texas; and s. xanthocephalus n. sp. from xanthocephalus xanthocephalus (bonaparte) (icteridae) and s. agelaius n. sp. from agelaius phoeniceus linnaeus (icteridae), both from arizona. spizella breweri (cassin) (emberizidae) from califor ...201121643897
Widespread dispersal of Borrelia burgdorferi-infected ticks collected from songbirds across Canada.Abstract Millions of Lyme disease vector ticks are dispersed annually by songbirds across Canada, but often overlooked as the source of infection. For clarity on vector distribution, we sampled 481 ticks (12 species and 3 undetermined ticks) from 211 songbirds (42 species/subspecies) nationwide. Using PCR, 52 (29.5%) of 176 Ixodes ticks tested were positive for the Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. Immature blacklegged ticks, Ixodes scapularis, collected from infested songbird ...201121864130
the role of color in expert object recognition.in the current study, we examined how color knowledge in a domain of expertise influences the accuracy and speed of object recognition. in experiment 1, expert bird-watchers and novice participants categorized common birds (e.g., robin, sparrow, cardinal) at the family level of abstraction. the bird images were shown in their natural congruent color, nonnatural incongruent color, and gray scale. the main finding was that color affected the performance of bird experts and bird novices, albeit in ...201425113021
physiological evidence that anthropogenic woodlots can substitute for native riparian woodlands as stopover habitat for migrant birds.the ability to find sufficient high-quality stopover habitat is a crucial factor for successful migration for woodland migrant birds. woodland habitats are scarce in the northern prairie region of north america, and natural woodlands have been greatly reduced concurrent with the appearance of small anthropogenic woodlands on the landscape. landbird migrants use both natural and anthropogenic woodlands in this region as stopover habitats, but the relative quality of these two habitats is unknown. ...201424457932
coccidiosis as a cause of transmural lymphocytic enteritis and mortality in captive nashville warblers (vermivora ruficapilla).transmural lymphocytic enteritis was diagnosed in thirteen nashville warblers (vermivora ruficapilla) during an epornitic with high mortality. in the intestinal lesions, asexual stages of coccidia were present within lymphocytes and asexual and sexual stages of coccidia were present within intestinal villar epithelium. ultrastructurally, the infiltrating lymphocytes resembled granular ("intraepithelial") lymphocytes, a cell known to be important in the life cycle of some avian coccidia. gross an ...19911758027
