(2) to compare the prevalence estimates from the cdhs, ldhs, ithp with those for the corresponding state populations (south carolina, north carolina ...200212119066
catalpa bignonioides alters extrafloral nectar production after herbivory and attracts ant bodyguards.inducible anti-herbivore defenses are found within many plant taxa, but there are fewer examples of inducible indirect defenses that incorporate the third trophic level. this study links caterpillar foraging, herbivore-induced changes in extrafloral nectar production, and the attraction of ants to vulnerable leaves and plants. catalpa bignonioides walter (bignoniaceae) uses extrafloral nectar to attract ant (forelius pruinosus(roger)) bodyguards in response to ceratomia catalpae (boisduval)(lepi ...200312647162
biological activity of extracts from catalpa bignonioides walt. (bignoniaceae).catalpa bignonioides walt. (bignoniaceae) is a species that belongs to a tropical family but has been introduced in many countries as ornamental. although this plant is consumed by indigenous cultures of south america for medical uses, experimental studies of the biological properties of catalpa bignonioides are lacking. the aim of this work was to study the biological activity of crude extracts from either pods, seeds or leaves of catalpa bignonioides which were collected in spain. ethyl ether, ...200312860302

incompatibility between plant-derived defensive chemistry and immune response of two sphingid herbivores.herbivorous insects use several different defenses against predators and parasites, and tradeoffs among defensive traits may occur if these traits are energetically demanding. chemical defense and immune response potentially can interact, and both can be influenced by host plant chemistry. two closely related caterpillars in the lepidopteran family sphingidae are both attacked by the same specialist endoparasitoid species but have mostly non-overlapping host plant ranges that differ in secondary ...201525516226

particulate matter on foliage of 13 woody species: deposition on surfaces and phytostabilisation in waxes--a 3-year study.particulate matter (pm) as an air pollutant can be harmful for human health through allergic, mutagenic and carcinogenic effects. although the main focus is on decreasing air pollution, after pm has been emitted to the atmosphere, one ofthe realistic options to decrease it's concentrations in urbanized area will be phytoremediation. this study compared the capacity to capture pm from air of seven tree species commonly cultivated in poland (catalpa bignonioides walter, corylus colurna l., fraxinu ...201323488010
a chemical-biological study reveals c9-type iridoids as novel heat shock protein 90 (hsp90) inhibitors.the potential of heat shock protein 90 (hsp90) as a therapeutic target for numerous diseases has made the identification and optimization of novel hsp90 inhibitors an emerging therapeutic strategy. a surface plasmon resonance (spr) approach was adopted to screen some iridoids for their hsp90 α binding capability. twenty-four iridoid derivatives, including 13 new natural compounds, were isolated from the leaves of tabebuia argentea and petioles of catalpa bignonioides. their structures were eluci ...201323362862
chemical defense across three trophic levels: catalpa bignonioides, the caterpillar ceratomia catalpae, and its endoparasitoid cotesia congregata.plant secondary chemistry can vary among plant tissues, individuals, and populations, and this variation has population-level consequences for upper trophic levels. in this study, we examined the multi-trophic consequences of variation in iridoid glycosides, which are a component of plant defense against generalist herbivores and also contribute to the unpalatability of sequestering herbivores to both vertebrate and invertebrate predators. several populations of catalpa bignonioides were located ...201121948221
nurses take ownership of rads discrepancies.the ed at catawba valley medical center in hickory, nc, has improved its responses to radiology discrepancies by redesigning its process and giving ownership of that process to two nurses. here are some of the key aspects of the process: every day the coordinators check the computer system, into which discrepancies are entered by radiology. diagnosis and treatment are reviewed with one of the ed physicians. if the patient has been discharged, the coordinator will contact the patient via phone or ...201020302209
staffing strategies help ed save more than $1 million a year.you don't have to cut staff to save money, as the ed at catawba valley medical center has demonstrated. it is saving more than $1 million a year without reducing the number of full-time staff. here's how you can do the same thing: if you are currently using contrast nurses, gradually replace them with prns. eliminate overtime for your nurses. it's better than having to lay some of them off. cross-train nursing assistants so they can fill in for other employees, such as secretaries or phlebotomis ...200919365926
antioxidant activity of catalpa bignonioides.antioxidant activity of methanolic extracts from inflorescence rachises, corollas, calyxes, leaves, valves of capsules and hypertrophied placenta of catalpa bignonioides by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl reduction (dpph) and tyrosine nitration inhibition induced by peroxynitrite was tested.200717604916
sublethal exposure to uv radiation affects respiration rates of the freshwater cladoceran daphnia catawba.we examined the effects of uv radiation (uvr) on metabolic rates of the freshwater cladoceran daphnia catawba. we exposed d. catawba to uvb for 12 h in a lamp phototron at levels of 2.08 and 4.16 kj m(-2) both with and without concomitant exposure to uva and visible photorepair radiation (prr). we also included a group that received prr only and a dark control group. respiration rates were measured for 6 h following exposure. respiration rates increased by 31.8% relative to the dark control at t ...200716613511
damaging uv radiation and invertebrate predation: conflicting selective pressures for zooplankton vertical distribution in the water column of low doc lakes.in nature most organisms have to manage conflicting demands of food gathering, predator avoidance, and finding a favorable abiotic environment (oxygen, temperature, etc.) in order to maximize their fitness. in the vertical water column of lakes with high solar ultraviolet radiation (uv) and invertebrate predators, zooplankton face two particularly strong and conflicting selective pressures. during daylight hours invertebrate predators often induce an upward vertical migration of zooplankton prey ...200414685849
