production of different types of mannosylerythritol lipids as biosurfactants by the newly isolated yeast strains belonging to the genus pseudozyma.mannosylerythritol lipids (mel), which are abundantly secreted by yeasts, are one of the most promising biosurfactants known. to obtain various types of mel and to attain a broad range of applications for them, screening of novel producers was undertaken. thirteen strains of yeasts were successfully isolated as potential mel producers; they showed high production yields of mel of around 20 g l(-1) from 40 g l(-1) of soybean oil. based on the taxonomical study, all the strains were classified to ...200717505770
isolation of both pseudozyma aphidis and nocardia otitidiscaviarum from a mycetoma on the leg.we describe a case of mycetoma which typified the classic presentation of the disease: a male farmer with affection of the lower limbs and a history of trauma. the patient presented with a swollen right lower limb showing multiple discharging sinuses for 25 years. histopathologically, grains were found by he stain, and clustered yeast-like cells were observed by pas stain. the distinctive 'dot-in-circle' sign was found through mri. besides nocardia otitidiscaviarum, pseudozyma aphidis was isolat ...201121595667
analytical characterization of mannosylerythritol lipid biosurfactants produced by biosynthesis based on feedstock sources from the agrofood industry.mannosylerythritol lipids (mels) are currently one of the most promising biosurfactants because of their multifunctional applications and good biodegradability. depending on the yeast strain and the feedstock used for the fermentation process, structural variations in the mels obtained occur. therefore, mels produced by pseudozyma aphidis dsmz 70725 with a soybean oil feedstock were characterized by chromatography and mass spectrometry (ms). column chromatography with silica provided fractionati ...201121318245
central venous catheter infection associated with pseudozyma aphidis in a child with short gut syndrome.pseudozyma aphidis is a heterobasidiomycetous yeast related to the smut fungi in the genus ustilago. pseudozyma species are usually isolated from plants and rarely from clinical specimens. we report what is believed to be the first paediatric case of central venous catheter (cvc)-related fungaemia associated with p. aphidis. prompt removal of the cvc in conjunction with anti-fungal therapy resulted in a successful outcome.200818349374
the isolation and characterization of pseudozyma sp. jcc 207, a novel producer of squalene.in examining the production of valuable compounds by marine microorganisms, we isolated a novel yeast strain that produces a large amount of squalene and several polyunsaturated fatty acids. molecular and phylogenetic analyses of the ribosomal dna suggest that the isolate belongs to the genus pseudozyma, which comprises ustilaginomycetous anamorphic yeasts. the nucleotide sequence of an internally transcribed spacer region from isolate pseudozyma sp. jcc207 showed 98% similarity with those of ps ...200818299826
physiological differences in the formation of the glycolipid biosurfactants, mannosylerythritol lipids, between pseudozyma antarctica and pseudozyma aphidis.vegetable oil is the usual carbon source for the production of biosurfactants (bs), mannosylerythritol lipids (mel). to simplify the procedures of bs production and recovery, we investigated the extracellular production of mel from water-soluble carbon sources instead of vegetable oils by using two representative yeast strains. the formation of extracellular mel from glucose was confirmed by thin layer chromatography (tlc) and hplc analysis. on glucose cultivation, pure mel were easily prepared ...200717103161
fed-batch bioreactor production of mannosylerythritol lipids secreted by pseudozyma aphidis.two strains of pseudozyma aphidis, dsm 70725 and dsm 14930, were used for the bioreactor production of mannosylerythritol lipids (mels). foam formation interfered substantially with the cultivation process. soybean oil was simultaneously employed as both carbon source and anti-foam agent. primary mel formation occurred after nitrate limitation. after a first short time-period of nitrate limitation and further nitrate addition, mels were secreted in spite of nitrate excess. the sedimentation of m ...200515729556
effect of foliar disease on the epiphytic yeast communities of creeping bentgrass and tall fescue.the effect of mechanical wounding or foliar diseases caused by sclerotinia homoeocarpa or rhizoctonia solani on the epiphytic yeast communities on creeping bentgrass and tall fescue were determined by leaf washing and dilution plating. total yeast communities on healthy bentgrass and tall fescue leaves ranged from 7.9 x 103 to 1.4 x 105 cfu.cm-2 and from 2.4 x 103 to 1.6 x 104 cfu.cm-2, respectively. mechanically wounded leaves (1 of 2 trials) and leaves with disease lesions (11 of 12 trials) su ...200415644900
formation and analysis of mannosylerythritol lipids secreted by pseudozyma aphidis.pseudozyma aphidis dsm 70725 was found to be a novel producer of mannosylerythritol lipids (mels). the mels were quantified by hplc. glucose as carbon source for precultivation supported growth well. by contrast, at concentrations >30 g l(-1) in preculture, subsequent mel formation in the main culture with soybean oil as sole carbon source was reduced. the type of substrate supply considerably influenced mel formation. high concentrations of soybean oil (80 ml l(-1)) at init favored the producti ...200515248042
assessment of yeast diversity in a marine environment in the south of portugal by microsatellite-primed pcr.the occurrence and diversity of yeasts in seawater was investigated in a study site located 20 km off faro, portugal, above the alvares cabral trench. a total of 43 water samples from different layers (above the permanent thermocline, under the thermocline and near the bottom) and directly from the surface, originated 234 isolates. all the isolates were identified using a molecular approach that included, in a first stage, msp-pcr fingerprinting. a total of 31 msp-pcr classes were formed, 8 for ...200314574117
