rotavirus (reovirus-like) infection of neonatal ruminants in a zoo nursery.an outbreak of a pneumoenteric disease occurred in neonates in a zoo nursery. four of seven affected animals died. rotaviruses were observed in the feces of an affected 4-day old impala (aepyceros melampus), a thomson's gazelle (gazella thomsonii) and an addax (addax nasomaculatus). encapsulated escherichia coli also were isolated from the feces. the recovered rotaviruses was antigenically related to bovine rotavirus. a bovine rotavirus vaccine was given orally and no adverse effects were noted.1978211273
detection and control of rotavirus infections in zoo animals.fecal specimens from 15 exotic animal species, with and without diarrhea, were examined for the presence of rotavirus, bacterial enteropathogens, and intestinal parasites. a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect antigens of rotavirus. rotavirus was detected in the feces of 20 (57%) of 35 of the animals, which included addax (addax nasomaculatus), nyala (tragelaphus angasi), saiga (saiga tatarica), white-tailed gnu (connochaetus gnou), greater kudu (tragelaphus strepsice ...19836315660
longistrongylus curvispiculum (nematoda: trichostrongyloidea) in free-ranging exotic antelope in texas.longistrongylus curvispiculum was recovered from free ranging sable (hippotragus niger), addax (addax nasomaculatus) and biesa oryx (oryx beisa) on two ranches in central texas (usa). these nematodes represented a small portion of the total abomasal worm burden dominated by haemonchus contortus. female l. curvispiculum easily could be confused with other ostertaginae, but the spicules of the males were diagnostic.19938355363
intraocular pressure and tear production in five herbivorous wildlife species.the intraocular pressure and rate of tear production were measured in 18 addax antelopes (addax nasomaculatus), four impalas (aepyceros melampus), 11 wide-lipped rhinoceroses (ceratotherium simum), 10 white-tailed wildebeests (connochaetes gnou) and seven scimitar-horned oryxes (oryx dammah). the animals were anaesthetised with an intramuscular injection of etorphine hydrochloride and acepromazine maleate, and the schirmer tear test i was used to evaluate tear production, and applanation tonomet ...200212233828
reprint of "echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto (s.s.) from the critically endangered antelope addax nasomaculatus in tunisia".echinococcus granulosus sensu lato (s.l.) is a zoonotic disease highly endemic in tunisia. canids including stray and semi-stray dogs, jackals and foxes are known as definitive hosts and a wide range of ungulates have been shown to harbour the metacestode hydatid stage and may serve as intermediate hosts. fertile hydatid cysts of echinococcus equinus and e. granulosus sensu stricto (s.s.) were recently molecularly identified for the first time from tunisian donkeys. e. granulosus (s.s.) was also ...201727887695

mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis infection in an addax (addax nasomaculatus).mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis was cultured from a single fecal sample collected from a 10-yr-old, captive-bred male addax (addax nasomaculatus). attempts to confirm infection with additional fecal cultures, serology, semen culture, and tissue biopsy were unsuccessful. there were no gross lesions on necropsy. on histopathology there were neither acid-fast organisms nor microscopic changes suggestive of active or clinical johne's disease. mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis w ...200112790428
epidural analgesia in addax (addax nasomaculatus).epidural analgesia was used 22 times in three female addax (addax nasomaculatus). the addax were physically restrained in a drop-floor chute and sedated with acepromazine (0.14-0.34 mg/kg). epidural analgesia was induced with 2% lidocaine (0.17-0.38 mg/kg) via a 20-ga 1-inch needle placed at the sacrococcygeal intervertebral space or the first intercoccygeal intervertebral space. adequate analgesia was attained to allow manipulation of the reproductive tract and transvaginal ultrasound-guided oo ...19989809599
antelopes (bovidae) kept in european zoological gardens as intermediate hosts of sarcocystis species.four different forms of sarcocysts from the zoo-kept antelopes addax nasomaculatus. antilope cervicapra, taurotragus oryx and boselaphus tragocamelus (bovidae) were investigated by light and transmission electron microscopy, in special consideration of the cyst wall. the sarcocysts found in addax (born in a zoo) were not distinguishable from sarcocystis medusiformis of australasian sheep by their morphology and would be the first indication for the occurrence of this species in europe. sarcocyst ...19969257346
the karyotype of the addax and its comparison with karyotypes of other species of hippotraginae antelopes.the karyotype of the addax (addax nasomaculatus, 2n = 58) has been investigated by rbg and cbg banding techniques. all chromosomes are acrocentric except the first pair of autosomes, which is submetacentric. the x chromosome is the largest acrocentric, and the y chromosome is a medium sized acrocentric. according to the standard conventions used for cattle and goat, p- and q-arms of the pair of submetacentric autosomes correspond, respectively, to chromosomes # 27 # 1. the comparison of banding ...19968931355

[primary cutaneous and metastasing haemangiosarcoma in an addax (addax nasomaculatus)].neoplastic diseases were described very rarely in addax (addax nasomaculatus). in this communication clinical signs, morphological and immunohistological findings in a 15-year-old, female addax with a primary cutaneous, re-occurring and metastasing haemangiosarcoma of a forelimb are reported.200818265754
bayesian, maximum parsimony and upgma models for inferring the phylogenies of antelopes using mitochondrial markers.this investigation was aimed to compare the inference of antelope phylogenies resulting from the 16s rrna, cytochrome-b (cyt-b) and d-loop segments of mitochondrial dna using three different computational models including bayesian (ba), maximum parsimony (mp) and unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (upgma). the respective nucleotide sequences of three oryx species (oryx leucoryx, oryx dammah and oryx gazella) and an out-group (addax nasomaculatus) were aligned and subjected to ba, ...200819204824
gross measurements of the digestive tract and visceral organs of addax antelope (addax nasomaculatus) following a concentrate or forage feeding regime.differences in macroscopic measurements of the gastrointestinal tract have been hypothesized to correlate with the browser-grazer continuum in the natural diet of ruminants. however, to what extent these characteristics represent species-specific traits, or respond to the actually ingested diet, remains to be investigated. twelve surplus addax antelope (addax nasomaculatus) were divided into two groups and fed, for 3 months, either their usual diet, consisting of a concentrate feed with a limite ...201728295511
physical characteristics of rumen contents in four large ruminants of different feeding type, the addax (addax nasomaculatus), bison (bison bison), red deer (cervus elaphus) and moose (alces alces).based on morphological and physiological observations, it has been suggested that differences exist in the degree that reticuloruminal (rr) contents are stratified between various ruminant species. however, the occurrence of stratification has hardly been measured in non-domestic species. forestomach contents of free-ranging moose (n=22) and red deer (24) shot during regular hunting procedures, and of captive (but 100% forage fed) addax (6) and bison (10) culled for commercial or management purp ...200919049897
fluid and particle retention in the digestive tract of the addax antelope (addax nasomaculatus)--adaptations of a grazing desert ruminant.retention time of food in the digestive tract is a major aspect describing the digestive physiology of herbivores. differences in feed retention times have been described for different ruminant feeding types. in this study, a dominantly grazing desert ruminant, the addax (addax nasomaculatus), was investigated in this respect. eight animals with a body weight (bw) of 87+/-5.3 kg on an ad libitum grass hay (chloris gayana) diet were available. co-edta and cr-mordanted fibers (<2 mm) were used as ...200818083600
microanatomy of the digestive tract, hooves and some visceral organs of addax antelope (addax nasomaculatus) following a concentrate or forage feeding regime.subacute ruminal acidosis is a common disease in captive non-domesticated ruminants and is mainly diagnosed by rumen fluid ph and rumen histology. furthermore, differences in ruminant gastrointestinal histology have been hypothesized to correlate with the browser-grazer continuum. twelve surplus addax antelope (addax nasomaculatus) were divided into two groups, fed either their usual diet, consisting of a concentrate feed with a limited amount of hay, or a diet of unlimited hay only, for 3 month ...201829520834
a high-density bac physical map covering the entire mhc region of addax antelope genome.the mammalian major histocompatibility complex (mhc) harbours clusters of genes associated with the immunological defence of animals against infectious pathogens. at present, no complete mhc physical map is available for any of the wild ruminant species in the world.201931185912
organization of the addax major histocompatibility complex provides insights into ruminant evolution.ruminants are critical as prey in transferring solar energy fixed by plants into carnivorous species, yet the genetic signature of the driving forces leading to the evolutionary success of the huge number of ruminant species remains largely unknown. here we report a complete dna map of the major histocompatibility complex (mhc) of the addax (addax nasomaculatus) genome by sequencing a total of 47 overlapping bac clones previously mapped to cover the mhc region. the addax mhc is composed of 3,224 ...202032161588
ovulatory cycles and anovulatory periods in the addax (addax nasomaculatus).changes in serum oestradiol and progesterone were measured to study their dynamics during ovulatory cycles in six female addax, an endangered antelope. blood was collected three times per week, during chute restraint, for 3 months (november to february) before introduction of a male, and continued until pregnancy was diagnosed with ultrasound. serum was analysed by enzymeimmunoassay. mean luteal phase, interluteal phase, and cycle durations were 22.7 +/- 2.0, 8.78 +/- 0.5 and 32.3 +/- 1.7 days, ...19968699424
genetic structure analysis of a highly inbred captive population of the african antelope addax nasomaculatus. conservation and management implications.the african antelope addax nasomaculatus is a rare mammal at high risk of extinction, with no more than 300 individuals in the wild and 1,700 captive animals distributed in zoos around the world. in this work, we combine genetic data and genealogical information to assess the structure and genetic diversity of a captive population located at parque lecocq zoo (n=27), originated from only two founders. we amplified 39 microsatellites previously described in other artiodactyls but new to this spec ...201120853411
a suite of microsatellite markers optimized for amplification of dna from addax (addax nasomaculatus) blood preserved on fta cards.the addax (addax nasomaculatus) is a critically endangered antelope that is currently maintained in zoos through regional, conservation breeding programs. as for many captive species, incomplete pedigree data currently impedes the ability of addax breeding programs to confidently manage the genetics of captive populations and to select appropriate animals for reintroduction. molecular markers are often used to improve pedigree resolution, thereby improving the long-term effectiveness of genetic ...201321898577
bilateral carpal contracture in a neonatal addax (addax nasomaculatus).a neonate male addax calf displayed an inability to extend its forelimbs bilaterally (range of motion restricted to 45 degrees-50 degrees on full extension) with resultant inability to stand. based on examination and radiographs, the congenital defect was attributed to contracted soft tissue structures (joint capsule and/or intercarpal ligaments). splinting, support of the limbs, and physical therapy resulted in moderate improvement of the angle of contraction (full flexion to approximately 120 ...201324063116
