antigenic comparison between tritrichomonas suis and t. foetus. ii. gel immunodiffusion. 1977407644
[follow-up of occurrence of protozoa in the nasal cavity of pigs in relation to atrophic rhinitis].ninety-five pigs, twelve suffering from atrophic rhinitis, were examined for the presence of protozoans in their nasal cavity. tritrichomonas suis was isolated only in a single case in a diseased boar representing 1.09% of the set. amoebae of the vahlkampfia genus were detected in two pigs (2.1%). the axenic cultures of the two protozoans isolated from the pigs were not pathogenic to laboratory animals. no etiological relation of tritochomonas suis to atrophic rhinitis was demonstrated.1976828348
[hemolytic activity of various strains and clones of trichomonas vaginalis and tritrichomonas suis].hemolytic activity of 7 isolates and 2 clones of trichomonas vaginalis and 1 isolate and 2 clones of tritrichomonas suis was determined using incubation with erythrocytes. t. vaginalis hemolyzed all human blood groups, and no correlation between pathogenicity and hemolytic activity was observed and no hemolysin released by the parasite could be detected. no hemolytic activity was observed with strains and clones of t. suis against erythrocytes from all blood groups and with swine erythrocytes.19947709097
some properties of sialic-acid binding systems in tritrichomonas suis and tritrichomonas foetus.hemagglutination of normal and enzyme-treated red blood cells and its inhibition, in vitro adherence to porcine caecal mucus and kinetic properties of neuraminidase were carried out with tritrichomonas suis and t. foetus. all tested strains adhered extensively to porcine caecal mucus in vitro and agglutinated human (a1, a2, b and o), rabbit, porcine and hen red blood cells. different inhibitors were efficacious in hemagglutination activity (ha) tests using neuraminidase treated and untreated red ...19947953072
the prevalence of intestinal protozoa in wild and domestic pigs.we examined faecal samples from 842 domestic and 91 wild pigs in order to record the prevalence of intestinal protozoa. we used staining of faecal smears by noller-westphal-gönnert method, cultivation in modified les broth and microscopical examination of native preparations using small magnification (for detection of balantidium coli). moreover, the faeces from wild pigs were examined by flotation in sheather's sugar solution for detection of coccidia. we found 8 coccidian species in the wild p ...19948073586
morphogenesis of the hydrogenosome: an ultrastructural study.the morphogenesis of hydrogenosomes in several trichomonad species (tritrichomonas foetus, trichomonas vaginalis, tritrichomonas suis, trichomonas gallinae, tritrichomonas augusta and monocercomonas sp) was investigated by transmission electron microscopy of thin sections and freeze-fracture replicas of whole cells or the isolated organelle. close proximity, and even continuity, between endoplasmic reticulum and hydrogenosomes was observed. structures were seen connecting hydrogenosomes to each ...19969075329
fine structure and isozymic characterization of trichomonadid protozoa.tritrichomonas suis and t. foetus are characterized herein at the ultrastructural and biochemical levels. microcinematography and measurements, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, cytochemistry for carbohydrate detection (thiéry technique), and isozyme electrophoresis analysis were performed. in all, 11 different strains from 5 species of parasites were studied (t. foetus, t. suis, trichomonas gallinae, t. vaginalis, and monocercomonas sp.). a total of 11 enzymes were scored. fine-str ...19979089728
conservation of calnexin in the early branching protozoan tritrichomonas suis.the cloning and characterization of ts-p66, a calcium-binding protein representing calnexin of the protozoan parasite tritrichomonas suis is described. a t. suis cdna expression library was screened with monospecific antibodies affinity-purified on an immuno-reactive 66 kda antigen in a triton x-114 membrane-protein fraction. the deduced amino acid sequence of the resulting cdna clones revealed that ts-p66 belongs to the calreticulin protein family and represents calnexin of t. suis. the key str ...200010802323
a novel ef-hand calcium-binding protein in the flagellum of the protozoan tritrichomonas suis.the cloning and characterization of ts-p41, an ef-hand calcium-binding protein of the protozoan parasite tritrichomonas suis is described. a t. suis cdna library was screened with monospecific antibodies affinity purified on an immunoreactive 41 kda antigen in a triton x-114 membrane-protein fraction. the resulting cdna fragments turned out to be derived from 2 different genes encoding closely related ts-p41 variants. the deduced amino acid sequences contained 6 ef-hand domains perfectly matchin ...200111272643
experimental infection with tritrichomonas suis in heifers.nine heifers were intravaginally challenged with 9.3x10(6) tritrichomonas suis reference strains. vaginal mucus and serum samples were collected weekly 4 weeks post-inoculation. vaginal mucus was cultured for t. suis and sera was tested by elisa against whole cell antigens for t. suis and tritrichomonas foetus. all vaginal mucus cultures were t. suis-negative during the experiment. elisa values for both antigens were similar and differences were not significant (p>0.05). positive control serum s ...200111445157
cattle pathogen tritrichomonas foetus (riedmüller, 1928) and pig commensal tritrichomonas suis (gruby & delafond, 1843) belong to the same species.a number of reports suggest that the sexually transmitted pathogen of cattle, tritrichomonasfoetus, and a gastrointestinal commensal of pigs, tritrichomonas suis, are very similar and may be co-specific. a conclusive review of the taxonomic and nomenclatural status of these species has not been presented so far. toward this end, we reexamined and compared porcine and bovine trichomonads with regard to their morphology, pathogenic potential, and dna polymorphism. using light and electron microsco ...200212046599
detection of tritrichomonas foetus by polymerase chain reaction in cultured isolates, cervicovaginal mucus, and formalin-fixed tissues from infected heifers and fetuses.a rapid, reliable polymerase chain reaction (pcr) assay, originally developed for definitive laboratory identification of the bovine venereal pathogen tritrichomonas foetus from cultures of male reproductive tract fluids, was used for testing the following: 1) cultured, geographically disparate trichomonad isolates, 2) formalin-fixed tissues from infected heifers and naturally infected fetuses, and 3) cervicovaginal mucus (cvm) from experimentally infected females. in 12 of 12 western hemisphere ...200314667024
molecular phylogeny of trichomonadidae family inferred from its-1, 5.8s rrna and its-2 sequences.the trichomonads have been the subject of several molecular studies that reported some discrepancies both at the lower and higher taxonomic levels. the purpose of this study was to make an extensive phylogenetic analysis of the trichomonadidae using its-1/5.8s/its-2 sequences, to better understand its phylogeny and the usefulness of this marker. its-1/5.8s/its-2 sequences of 36 strains from 14 species belonging to trichomonadidae and monocercomonadidae were analysed, in which 20 were newly deter ...200415217735
intestinal protozoa in wild boars (sus scrofa) in western iran.a total of 12 gastrointestinal tracts of wild boars (sus scrofa) from western iran (luristan) were examined for protozoan infection between september 2000 and november 2001. of 12 boars examined, 67% harbored one or more species of the following protozoa: balantidium coli (25%), tritrichomonas suis (25%), blastocystis sp. (25%), entamoeba polecki (17%), entamoeba suis (8%), iodamoeba butschlii (17%), and chilomastix mesnili (8%). four of these protozoan species also are reported in humans, and p ...200415650104
trichomonad gastritis in rhesus macaques (macaca mulatta) infected with simian immunodeficiency virus.in a retrospective study, 51 cases of gastritis (14%) were identified from among 341 necropsies performed on simian immunodeficiency virus (siv)-infected rhesus macaques (macaca mulatta) at the new england primate research center from 1993 to 2001. protozoa were seen in the stomach of 13 monkeys (25%) with gastritis. two histopathologic manifestations of gastritis were observed: seven cases of lymphoplasmacytic gastritis with trichomonad trophozoites within lumens of gastric glands and four case ...200515657268
are tritrichomonas foetus and tritrichomonas suis synonyms?tritrichomonas suis, a tritrichomonad of pigs, and the related species tritrichomonas foetus, a tritrichomonad of cattle, are morphologically identical. the taxonomic relationship between these two tritrichomonads has been questioned ever since they were established as distinct species in 1843 and 1928, respectively. here, we compare the similarities of morphology, ultrastructure, distribution, host specificity, characteristics of in vitro cultivation, immunology, biochemistry and analysis of mo ...200515734659
ultrastructural study of a tetratrichomonad isolated from pig fecal samples.trichomonads found in pigs include the commensal tritrichomonas suis (more well known because of its synonymy to tritrichomonas foetus, a trichomonad parasite of cattle and other animals) and tetratrichomonas buttreyi, which appear similar to tritrichomonas suis under the light microscope. a trichomonad isolated from pig fecal samples was subjected to scanning and transmission electron microscopy for ultrastructural study. the organism's ultrastructure revealed features commonly found in trichom ...200818682985
intestinal tritrichomonas suis (= t. foetus) infection in japanese cats.tritrichomonas suis (=t. foetus) has recently been reported to be a causative agent of chronic large-bowel diarrhea in cats. while the disease was previously attributed to pentatrichomonas hominis, the etiologic agent for feline trichomonal diarrhea was identified as t. suis. although feline trichomonosis due to t. suis has been reported at prevalences ranging from 14 to 31% in europe and the us, no reports of the pathogen have been published to date in japan. in 2008, however, we encountered a ...201122104396
the prevalence of intestinal trichomonads in chinese pigs.intestinal infection of pigs with trichomonads, (tritrichomonas suis, tetratrichomonas buttreyi, and pentatrichomonas hominis) has been reported in many countries, such as the philippines, belgium, and the czech republic. however, the prevalence of trichomonads infection of swine in china has not yet been investigated. in this study, we used small subunit ribosomal rna genes to detect the prevalence of t. suis, t. buttreyi and p. hominis among 158 fecal specimens from healthy pigs. infection rat ...201525981103
molecular survey of tritrichomonas suis (=t. foetus) 'cat' and 'cattle' genotypes in pigs in japan.tritrichomonas suis (=t. foetus) is a protozoan parasite of pigs, cattle and cats. based on host range and genetic differences, t. suis has been divided into a 'cat genotype' and a 'cattle genotype', with the latter genotype capable of infecting both cattle and pigs. since no information is currently available on the genetic characteristics of t. suis from pigs in japan, we conducted a molecular survey of t. suis using fecal dna from pigs in japan. of the 64 pigs examined, nested pcr revealed th ...201323196826
tritrichomonas--systematics of an enigmatic genus.tritrichomonas spp. are parasitic protozoans that proliferate on mucus membranes of the urogenital, gastro-intestinal or nasal tract. for instance, tritrichomonas foetus is an important cause of reproductive failure in cattle. some years ago, t. foetus was also identified as a causative agent of diarrhoea in cats. previous studies on the morphological, physiological and molecular levels have raised doubts as to the phylogenetic relationship among some tritrichomonas species, particularly in rela ...201222662341
comparative analysis of tritrichomonas foetus (riedmüller, 1928) cat genotype, t. foetus (riedmüller, 1928) cattle genotype and tritrichomonas suis (davaine, 1875) at 10 dna loci.the parasitic protists in the genus tritrichomonas cause significant disease in domestic cattle and cats. to assess the genetic diversity of feline and bovine isolates of tritrichomonas foetus (riedmüller, 1928) wenrich and emmerson, 1933, we used 10 different genetic regions, namely the protein coding genes of cysteine proteases 1, 2 and 4-9 (cp1, 2, 4-9) involved in the pathogenesis of the disease caused by the parasite. the cytosolic malate dehydrogenase 1 (mdh1) and internal transcribed spac ...201223123273
epitopes of the highly immunogenic trichomonas vaginalis α-actinin are serodiagnostic targets for both women and men.there is a need for a point-of-care serodiagnostic test for women and men for sexually transmitted infections (stis) caused by trichomonas vaginalis. sera from women with this sti and sera from men that were analyzed in studies showing a relationship between serostatus and prostate cancer are highly seropositive in response to trichomonad α-actinin and its truncated protein (act-p2) (positive control sera). epitope mapping experiments showed that positive control sera from women had antibodies t ...201323616456
chromosome numbers of tritrichomonas foetus and tritrichomonas suis.tritrichomonas foetus and tritrichomonas suis isolates were cultivated axenically in diamond's medium. studies on the chromosome numbers of these two species with a light microscope were done by adding different concentrations of colchicine into the medium, incubating at 37 degrees c for 6-8 h and using a hypotonic swelling technique. the diploid chromosome numbers of both t. foetus and t. suis were 2n=10.19989786624
