a fatal enteric syndrome in mystromys albicaudatus (white tailed rat) following topical antibiotic treatment.heavy death losses (59%) occurred in adult mystromys 3--14 days after muscle biopsies were taken from their rear legs. clinical signs included anorexia, depression, and rough hair coat. predominant necropsy findings were hrmorrhagic typhlitis and colitis. results of studies evaluating the roles of the anesthetic and the tropical antibiotic ointment suggested that the deaths were caused by ingestion of the topically applied antibiotic.1978214636
african hamster lymphocytes as a model for immunologic studies.the mitogenic response of splenic lymphocytes from mystromys albicaudatus was studied to evaluate the potential of this animal as a model for immunologic research. in response to phytochemagglutinin and concanavalin a, splenic cells from mystromys, unlike those from mouse strains, incorporate [3h] thymidine optimally in microculture at 10(5) to 2 x 10(5) cells per microculture. maximum magnitude of incorporation in response to the same doses of mitogen used in mouse splenic lymphocyte microcultu ...1977343206

growth cycle-dependent generation of complement-resistant leishmania promastigotes.the ability of in vitro grown leishmania promastigotes to resist lysis by complement and survive in undiluted human serum was related to the species of leishmania and the growth phase in culture. promastigotes from log phase cultures were always killed in undiluted serum, whereas survival of stationary phase promastigotes varied among species. all l. major and l. m. amazonensis were killed, while up to 30% of l.b. panamensis and 10% of l. donovani survived. lysis of promastigotes by human serum ...19853973390
experimentally induced tyzzer's disease in the african white-tailed rat (mystromys albicaudatus).tyzzer's disease was induced experimentally in nonimmunosuppressed, weanling mystromys albicaudatus by oral inoculation with bacillus piliformis spores. focal areas of necrosis bordered by cells containing b. piliformis were observed first in the tunica muscularis of the intestine and in the periportal region of the liver 3 days post-inoculation, in the ventricular myocardium 7 days post-inoculation and in the brainstem 9 days post-inoculation. healing in the tunica muscularis, liver and myocard ...19863773459
detection and enumeration of leishmania in sand flies using agar-based media.an agar plating technique was used to determine the number of amastigotes ingested by lutzomyia longipalpis fed on papules on mesocricetus auratus caused by leishmania mexicana amazonensis and on lesions on mystromys albicaudatus caused by leishmania braziliensis panamensis. the technique involved homogenizing sand flies after bloodfeeding on the infected animals and spreading the homogenate over the surface of agar plates. a great variation in the number of amastigotes ingested by individual sa ...19873688307
viremia and antibody response of small african and laboratory animals to crimean-congo hemorrhagic fever virus infection.eleven species of small african wild mammals, laboratory rabbits, guinea pigs, and syrian hamsters were infected with crimean-congo hemorrhagic fever (cchf) virus. low-titered viremia followed by development of antibody was observed in scrub hares (lepus saxatilis), cape ground squirrels (xerus inauris), red veld rats (aethomys chrysophilus), white tailed rats (mystromys albicaudatus), bushveld gerbils (tatera leucogaster), striped mice (rhabdomys pumilio), and guinea pigs. the maximum viremic t ...19892499205
glomerular lesions of diabetes mellitus in mystromys albicaudatus.the kidneys of 175 nondiabetic and diabetic mystromys albicaudatus were evaluated histologically by light microscopy. the degree of capillary basement membrane thickening and the predominant glomerular histologic pattern were recorded. statistical analyses indicated that glomerulosclerosis is associated with diabetes in this species. in addition, a granular capillary basement membrane lesion occurred more frequently in diabetic than in nondiabetic animals.19751120026
relationship between pancreatic lesions and serum glucose values in mystromys albicaudatus.serum glucose levels and pancreatic islet cell changes were studied in combination in 127 mystromys albicaudatus in an effort to develop better criteria for defining diabetes mellitus in thiss rodent. the study supports a previous report in which 170 mg/100 ml was selected as indicative of hyperglycemia based on statistical analysis of serum glucose distributions. the presence of exceptions to predicted correlations between islet cell changes and serum glucose levels was identified for further s ...19751094185
selected biological values of the african white-tailed sand rat (mystromys albicaudatus).forty-three female and 44 male, sexually mature normal african sand rats (mystromys albicaudatus) provided serum and urine for determining normal ranges of selected serum chemistry and electrolyte determinations and for routine nonfasted urinalyses. serum chloride and serum glucose levels were greater and serum sodium levels lower for female rats. an unusually high physiological level of urine protein was detected, and it was determined that standard dipstick methods for determining urine protei ...1979513618
organ weights and organ:body weight ratios of the african white-tailed rat (mystromys albicaudatus).fifty-three adult female and 51 adult male white-tailed rats (mystromys albicaudatus) were killed with ether and weighed; the spleen, kidneys, liver, heart, lung, pancreas, brain and gonads were dissected free of adhering tissue and weighted. the mean absolute organ weight and organ:body weight ratios by sex and organ were calculated and compared. the male rats were significantly (p less than or equal to 0.05) heavier. the mean weight of the males was 110.0 +/- 23.8 g versus 82.9 +/- 16.1 g for ...1979439848
partial oculocutaneous albinism in mystromys albicaudatus: nonhomology with the chediak-higashi syndrome.partially albinic mystromys albicaudatus were examined to determine if the condition in these animals was homologous with the chediak-higashi syndrome. tissues and cells from partially albinic and normal mystromys albicaudatus were studied by light and electron microscopy. no evidence of cytoplasmic granule enlargement, which is characteristic of the chediak-higashi syndrome, was detected in the cells of the partially albinic rats when compared to controls. it was concluded that the inherited co ...1979439847
the plio-pleistocene vegetation and climate of sterkfontein and swartkrans, south africa, based on micromammals.micromammalian remains from oldowan and acheulean horizons in sterkfontein member 5e (m5e-o and m5e-a) and swartkrans members 1-3 (skx1-3) provide information for the period between about 2 and 1 ma. another small sample from sterkfontein member 4 (m4) refers to a short period around 2.8-2.6 ma and material from sterkfontein post member 6 infill (post-m6) relates to the middle stone age occupation around 100 ka. virtual absence of evidence of digestion on in situ lower molars of the major prey s ...200111437522
the thermal biology of the white-tailed rat mystromys albicaudatus, a cricetine relic in southern temperate african grassland.this study examines the hypothesis that mystromys albicaudatus, a cricetine relic in southern africa, has thermal characteristics typical of a rodent adapted to a cold temperature regime. metabolic rate (oxygen consumption) of m. albicaudatus was measured using open-flow respirometry at ambient temperatures ranging from 5 degrees c to 35 degrees c. lowest specific oxygen consumption was 1.352 +/- 0.089 ml o2 g-1hr-1 (n = 8; body mass = 93.78 +/- 6.27 g) at 25 degrees c, equivalent to 121.8% of t ...19957866776
experimental infection of mystromys albicaudatus with leishmania braziliensis: pathology.thirty-four mystromys albicaudatus were injected intradermally with leishmania braziliensis promastigotes and examined and killed during a 12-week period. all animals developed single cutaneous lesions at the sites of inoculation that began as a papular thickening in the dermis and progressed to a 2.0 cm crateriform ulcer. the histopathology of these lesions was characterized by granuloma formation and diffuse infiltrates of lymphocytes and plasma cells. parasites were most frequently observed i ...19807435783
laboratory vector studies on six mosquito and one tick species with chikungunya virus.the tick ornithodoros savignyi and the mosquitoes culex horridus, culex quinquefasciatus, aedes fulgens, ae. furcifer and mansonia africana were tested for infection rates and ability to transmit chikungunya virus. o. savignyi and cx quinquefasciatus did not become infected and cx quinquefasciatus failed to transmit the virus between vervet monkeys, cercopithecus aethiops. only one of 17 cx horridus feeding on a blood-virus mixture became infected which included infection of the salivary glands. ...19816115488

glycosylated hemoglobin in mystromys albicaudatus: a diabetic animal model.glycosylated hemoglobin was measured in mystromys albicaudatus, a rodent model of diabetes mellitus, using a newly developed colorimetric assay. the mean glycosylated hemoglobin for non-diabetic mystromys (n = 321) was 14.8 nmol hydroxymethylfurfural / 10 mg hemoglobin which is similar to that obtained in non-diabetic humans. animals with a glycosylated hemoglobin value greater than 19 nmol hydroxymethylfurfural / 10 mg hemoglobin were characterized as diabetics. significant correlations were fo ...19827078072
intraperitoneal pentobarbitone anaesthesia of mystromys albicaudatus.anaesthesia trials with intraperitoneal (i.p.) pentobarbitone sodium in mystromys albicaudatus indicated that the optimum dose is between 4 and 5 mg/100 g bodyweight. no differences were detected in duration of anaesthesia associated with sex or time of day.19853974192
haematology of mystromys albicaudatus.haemograms were determined for 90 mystromys, 3-24 months of age, to establish normal values and to evaluate the influence of age and gender. males over 6 months of age had higher red blood cell counts, packed cell volumes and haemoglobin levels than females of the same age. the haemograms of females 3-5 months old resembled those of males. age and gender did not cause detectable differences in leucocyte numbers in animals over 6 months old.19873695390
response of two rodents, mastomys natalensis and mystromys albicaudatus, to the pancreatic carcinogen azaserine.the response of two rodents to azaserine carcinogenicity for the pancreas was evaluated. mystromys albicaudatus was not responsive; however, mastomys natalensis developed large numbers of atypical acinar cell nodules and several adenomas in a 6-month study. mastomys is the most responsive of several animals in which azaserine has been studied as a pancreatic carcinogen.1979286103
