new self-marking device for dispersal studies of black flies (diptera: simuliidae).an effective and inexpensive device is described for marking newly emerged black flies with fluorescent dust. survival of marked adults of simulium venustum s.l. and stegopterna mutata s.l. did not differ significantly from unmarked individuals over a 5-day period. marked individuals were attracted to human hosts in landing biting tests, and the portions of the self-marking trap lying just above the water surface did not appear to significantly hamper black fly emergence success.19921431862
comparison of mitochondrial dna sequences of seven morphospecies of black flies (diptera: simuliidae).universal primers constructed from the 16s ribosomal rna gene in the drosophila yakuba mitochondrial genome were successfully used to amplify, via the polymerase chain reaction, the homologous region of mitochondrial dna from seven black fly morphospecies. amplification was achieved from single larval salivary glands and from single adults preserved in carnoy's fixative (ethanol - acetic acid, 3:1), allowing dna sequences and polytene chromosome banding pattern data to be gathered from the same ...19912055453

entomopathogenic fungi of the order entomophthorales (zygomycotina) in adult black fly populations (diptera: simuliidae) in quebec.infections by insect-pathogenic fungi of the order entomophthorales in two adult black fly populations were studied in the réserve faunique du saint-maurice (quebec). entomophaga near limoniae infected simulium verecundum/rostratum in june whereas erynia curvispora predominantly parasitized simulium decorum from the 2nd week of july to september and erynia conica attacked the simulium venustum complex, simulium verecundum/rostratum, and the simulium vittatum complex from may to september. the fu ...19947922891
blood-feeding host preferences of the isomorphic species simulium venustum and s. truncatum.animal-baited traps, using fox, mink, rabbits and ducks, were used in host preference experiments in two habitats (beach and woods). a generalized linear model of blood-feeding host preference is presented to test for significant differences between the isomorphic species simulium venustum and simulium truncatum. the s. truncatum population peaked before that of s. venustum. on any given day the two species divided their blood-feeding efforts among the different hosts in the same proportions. on ...19938481525
humans vary in their ability to elicit biting responses from simulium venustum (diptera:simuliidae).human subjects were exposed to simulium venustum (sensu lato) to determine whether biting rates differed among individuals. tests with s. venustum collected from a co2-baited target demonstrated that one subject was consistently bitten more often than another. for each individual, biting increased with the differential between skin and ambient temperature. latex rubber membranes that had been worn against the skin of subjects and then stretched onto a warned aluminum block were always bitten les ...19979086713
field evaluation of deet and a piperidine repellent against aedes communis (diptera: culicidae) and simulium venustum (diptera: simuliidae) in the adirondack mountains of new york.repellent efficacy of n,n-diethyl-3-methyl-benzamide (deet), the piperidine, 1-[3-cyclohexen-1-ylcarbonyl]-2-methylpiperidine (ai3-37220), and a 1:1 ratio of deet + ai3-37220 were evaluated topically (0.25 mg/cm2 applied in ethanol solution) on human volunteers against the mosquito aedes communis (degeer) and the black fly simulium venustum say. the average repellency of all three formulations was > 95% at 4 h. for both mosquitoes and black flies, deet alone provided < 90% protection at 6 h, whe ...200011126550

mermithids (nematoda: mermithidae) parasitizing different blackfly (diptera: simuliidae) populations in quebec: environmental parameters related to their presence or absence in the studied brooks.specimens of isomermis wisconsinensis, gastromermis viridis, mesomermis flumenalis, and mesomermis camdenensis have been found in 14 out of 28 studied sites. their hosts were the following blackfly species: cnephia dacotensis, cnephia mutata, prosimulium sp., simulium decorum, simulium tuberosum, simulium venustum/verecundum complex, and simulium vittatum. superparasitism was observed in several simuliid larvae and, occasionally, with 2 different mermithid species. the prevalence of different me ...200818939698
prevalence of the trichomycete fungus harpella melusinae (harpellales: harpellaceae) in larval black flies (diptera: simuliidae) across a heterogeneous environment.a total of 2063 mid- to late-instar larval black flies were collected from 64 stream sites in south carolina and screened for the presence of the trichomycete fungus harpella melusinae. sixteen of 18 host species were colonized by h. melusinae on at least one occasion. prevalence of h. melusinae in larvae of simulium tuberosum cytospecies "a" was highest in acidic streams with low conductivity, whereas h. melusinae colonized larvae of simulium verecundum most frequently in slower-moving streams. ...200321148966

phylogeny of sibling species of simulium venustum and s. verecundum (diptera: simuliidae) based on sequences of the mitochondrial 16s rrna gene.the phylogeny of four sibling species of simulium venustum (cc, cc3, cc4, and ac(gb)) and two sibling species of s. verecundum (aa and acd = s. rostratum) was reconstructed using nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial large subunit rrna gene. separate phylogenetic analyses were performed by dividing the sequence data into: (1) helices of a computer-generated secondary structure of the rdna; (2) loops of the computer-generated structure; (3) helices of a consensus secondary structure (deduced ...19937519520

diphosphoglycerate and phytic acid as feeding stimulants for the blood-feeding bug rhodnius prolixus.1. the compounds 2,3-diphosphoglycerate (dpg), phytic acid (pa) and adenosine triphosphate (atp) were tested as gorging stimulants for rhodnius prolixus. all three are potent phagostimulants, with ed50 values less than 10 microm; in contrast, only atp stimulates the black fly simulium venustum, with an ed50 of 13 microm. 2. equimolar mixtures of dpg and atp showed pronounced synergism, causing 75% of test r. prolixus to gorge at a dose of 0.3 microm. 3. the response to dpg and pa supports the hy ...19826124351
polytene chromosomes of simulium arakawae, a pest species in the simulium venustum group (diptera: simuliidae) from japan.the chromosomal relationships of simulium arakawae, a black fly of medical-veterinary importance, are resolved relative to other members of the simulium venustum species group and to the standard reference map for the subgenus simulium. simulium arakawae differs from the subgeneric standard by eight fixed inversions, apparently none of which are shared with any of the other 17 chromosomally studied nominal members of the group. the chromosomal features that indicate group membership might have b ...201122041759
nectar versus honeydew as sources of sugar for male and female black flies (diptera: simuliidae).black flies were collected twice daily using a vehicle-mounted insect net on 8 sample days between 20 may and 9 july 1993. the contents of the crops and midguts of 160 male and 160 female simulium venustum say were analyzed individually by thin-layer chromatography. fourteen different combinations were identified of the following sugars: fructose glucose sucrose/turanose, melezitose, raffinose, and stachyose. presence of melezitose and stachyose indicated that black flies had fed on homopteran h ...19979439113

the penetration of three simuliid species by the nematode reesimermis nielseni.after 4 h of exposure to the preparasitic stage of r. nielseni first, second, and third instar simulium venustum, s. decorum and s. vittatum were found to be harbouring the nematodes in the haemocoel and/or the gut. the possible use of r. nielseni in the biological control of simuliid species is discussed.19751083311
