the effects of selection and human preference on coat colour gene frequencies in urban cats.in an attempt to examine the possibility of selection on domestic cats populations in the urban environment, a number of surveys were conducted in four contrasting areas of glasgow--two near either extreme of western, industrial socioeconomic status. the first survey was in the form of a questionnaire to inhabitants enquiring of preference for a particular phenotype. this survey revealed a consistent preference for lighter phenotypes in all areas. the incidence of cat ownership was greatest in t ...19751060609
molecular variation, evolution and geographical distribution of louping ill virus.following the demonstration that the tick-borne encephalitis (tbe) subgroup viruses are distributed as a cline across the northern hemisphere (zanotto et al., 1995), we have analyzed the dispersal pattern of louping ill (li) virus, the most westerly located member in the cline. a total number of 21 li or li-related virus e gene sequences have been used for a detailed molecular analysis of the evolution, phylogeny and geographical distribution of li virus in the british isles and ireland. the res ...19979607079
population structure and genome-wide patterns of variation in ireland and britain.located off the northwestern coast of the european mainland, britain and ireland were among the last regions of europe to be colonized by modern humans after the last glacial maximum. further, the geographical location of britain, and in particular of ireland, is such that the impact of historical migration has been minimal. genetic diversity studies applying the y chromosome and mitochondrial systems have indicated reduced diversity and an increased population structure across britain and irela ...201020571510
the mutation spectrum of hyperphenylalaninaemia in the republic of ireland: the population history of the irish revisited.phenylketonuric and hyperphenylalaninaemic patients in the population of the republic of ireland were screened for mutations at the human phenylalanine hydroxylase (pah) locus. a composite data set for the island of ireland was generated by merging the findings of this study with extant data for northern ireland. analysis of this data on the basis of the four historic provinces (munster, leinster, connacht and ulster) revealed genetic diversity that is informative in terms of demographic forces ...200212173030
a hybrid zone comprising staggered chromosomal clines in the house mouse (mus musculus domesticus).in the vicinity of john o'groats (caithness, scotland) there is a small karyotypic race of the house mouse (mus musculus domesticus) characterized by a diploid number of 32 chromosomes, including the metacentrics 4.10, 9.12, 6.13 and 11.14. this race forms a hybrid zone with the standard british race (fully acrocentric chromosomes, 2n = 40). although hybrid zones normally consist of several (or many) narrow character clines at the same position, this zone is unusual in that the chromosomal cline ...19911684667
further note on possible changes in the geographic distribution of abo and rh blood groups in great britain.we previously reported the tendency for the clines of blood group distributions in england, scotland, and wales to become flatter as the result of internal migration. the data came from a one-week birth cohort followed for 16 years. a further seven years and a finer geographic analysis yield mixed results. the rh- clines did become flatter, but the clines for abo blood groups a and o showed the opposite tendency during the additional years.19968935326
