the geography of mercury and pcbs in north carolina's local seafood.mercury and pcbs are used by non-governmental organizations and federal agencies to inform seafood safety recommendations. pollution dynamics suggest recommendations on the national scale may be too large to be accurate. we tested softshell and hardshell blue crab, white and pink shrimp, oysters, clams, spot, and mullet from fishers in each of the three north carolina fishery districts. we measured mercury using epa method 7473 and pcbs using a commercially available elisa kit. over 97% of sampl ...201222658912
Marine debris impacts to a tidal fringing-marsh in North Carolina. We evaluated injuries to Spartina alterniflora by debris items common to North Carolina coastal waters as a function of debris type (wire blue crab pots, vehicle tires, and anthropogenic wood) and deployment duration, and monitored S. alterniflora recovery following debris removal. Injuries sustained by S. alterniflora and subsequent recovery, varied considerably between debris types. Differences were likely due to dissimilarities in the structure and composition of debris. Tires caused an immed ...201122051039
a comparison of blue crab and bivalve delta15n tissue enrichment in two north carolina estuaries.stable isotope analyses (delta(15)n) were used to examine invertebrate tissue enrichment in two north carolina estuaries with differing amounts of nutrient loading. bivalves collected from a nutrient sensitive estuary yielded a significant difference in mean nitrogen isotopic composition of tissue (10.4 per thousand+/-0.82; n=66) compared to bivalves collected from a less nutrient sensitive estuary (6.4 per thousand+/-0.63; n=45). similarly, blue crabs from nutrient sensitive sites had a nitroge ...200716714075
shell disease and metal content of blue crabs, callinectes sapidus, from the albemarle-pamlico estuarine system, north carolina.concentrations of 13 elements were determined for three tissues (gill, hepatopancreas, muscle) in diseased crabs from a contaminated estuary (pamlico river, nc), and in non-diseased crabs from both the contaminated estuary and a relatively uncontaminated area (albemarle sound, nc) during the fall 1989 and summer 1990. the diseased crabs had lesions which completely penetrated their dorsal integument, while the non-diseased crabs lacked lesions. sediments within the contaminated area showed enric ...19921456781
