indigenous plasmodium falciparum malaria in queens, ny.cryptic/sporadic malaria is rare in the united states. we describe a patient who developed malaria in new york city without any known contact with, or travel to, a malaria-endemic area. the patient presented with symptoms of gastroenteritis. later, she developed hemolysis and hepatosplenomegaly, and plasmodium falciparum was found in blood smears. possible sources of malaria could be an indigenous infected mosquito or a transported infected mosquito from a local international airport.19957748055

malaria: 30 years of experience at a new york city teaching hospital.two previous reviews summarized the new york hospital experience with 110 cases of malaria from 1968 to 1990. we have extended these studies to include 59 cases of malaria seen from 1991 to 1999 and analyze trends over the past 30 years. plasmodium falciparum remains the most common species, 38 (64%) of the 59 cases, with the majority of them, 34 (89%) of 38 cases, being acquired in africa. of the 59 cases, 22 (37%) were immigrants living in the united states who had visited their countries of o ...200415100455
blood parasites of house finches (carpodacus mexicanus) from georgia and new york.this study investigated the ecology of hematozoan parasites in two eastern populations of house finch (carpodacus mexicanus). blood smears were obtained from birds captured in georgia during 2001-2003 (n = 757) and new york during 2001 (n = 282) and evaluated for the presence of hematozoans. low-density infections of haemoproteus fringillae and plasmodium relictum were confirmed at each location. infections were observed year-round in georgia, but primarily between june and november in new york. ...200818436682
simian malaria in a u.s. traveler--new york, 2008.four species of intraerythrocytic protozoa of the genus plasmodium (p. falciparum, p. vivax, p. ovale, and p. malariae) are known to cause malaria in humans. however, recent reports from asia suggest the possibility that a fifth malaria species, plasmodium knowlesi, is emerging as an important zoonotic human pathogen. although more than 20 species of plasmodium can infect nonhuman primates, until recently, naturally acquired human infections of simian malaria were viewed as rare events lacking p ...200919282815
congenital malaria--nassau county, new york, 2004.human malaria is a parasitic disease caused by four distinct species of intraerythrocytic protozoa of the genus plasmodium. the parasites are transmitted to persons by the bite of an infective female anopheles mosquito and rarely through blood transfusion and congenital transmission. the majority of malarial infections reported in the united states are acquired abroad by recent immigrants or persons returning from areas where malaria is endemic. this report describes the first documented case of ...200515843787
malaria surveillance--united states, 1993.malaria is caused by infection with one of four species of plasmodium (p. falciparum, p. vivax, p. ovale, and p. malariae), which are transmitted by the bite of an infective female anopheles sp. mosquito. most malaria cases in the united states occur among persons who have traveled to areas (i.e., other countries) in which disease transmission is ongoing. however, cases are transmitted occasionally through exposure to infected blood products, by congenital transmission, or by local mosquito-born ...199712412770
probable locally acquired mosquito-transmitted plamodium vivax infection--suffolk county, new york, 1999. 200010992616
probable locally acquired mosquito-transmitted plasmodium vivax infection--suffolk county, new york, 1999.in the united states, malaria transmission was eliminated in the 1940s, and malaria eradication was certified in 1970 (1). since then, 60 small localized outbreaks of probable mosquito-transmitted malaria have been reported to cdc (2-6). before 1995, the number of imported malaria cases reported to the suffolk county (new york) department of health services ranged from zero to eight per year. since 1995, seven to 17 cases per year have been reported. in all of these cases, a history of residing ...200010881766
a polymorphic multigene family encoding an immunodominant protein from babesia microti.human babesiosis in the united states is caused predominantly by babesia microti, a tick-transmitted blood parasite. improved testing methods for the detection of infection with this parasite are needed, since asymptomatic b. microti infection represents a potential threat to the blood supply in areas where b. microti is endemic. we performed immunoscreening of an expression library of genomic dna from a human isolate of b. microti (strain mn1). among 17 unique immunoreactive clones, we identifi ...200010618117
malaria surveillance in new york city: 1991-1996.the transmission of malaria has increased in recent years in many countries where it was once eradicated or under control, and malaria remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the developing world. imported cases of malaria have been increasing in new york city and throughout the united states during the past decade. the new york city department of health has modified its malaria surveillance program in order to improve the assessment of diagnosis and treatment of malaria in n ...19989531658
mosquito-transmitted malaria--michigan, 1995.during the 19th and early 20th centuries, malaria was endemic in many areas of the united states. although indigenous transmission was interrupted by the 1940s, recent outbreaks in new jersey, new york, and texas have underscored the potential for reintroduction of mosquitoborne transmission of malaria in the united states. this report summarizes the investigation of a case of plasmodium vivax malaria diagnosed during september 1995 in a resident of michigan with no history of international trav ...19968609882
hemograms and hematozoa of sharp-shinned (accipiter striatus) and cooper's hawks (accipiter cooperii) captured during spring migration in northern new york.hemograms were determined for 26 cooper's (accipiter cooperii) and 55 sharp-shinned hawks (accipiter striatus) captured during spring migration (27 march to 12 may 1987) on the south shore of lake ontario, new york (usa). no significant differences were noted in packed cell volume and estimated total solids between the species. however, cooper's hawks had significantly higher total white blood cells counts and higher concentrations of heterophils, monocytes, and eosinophils. proportionally, lymp ...19958583640
monitoring of intravenous quinidine infusion in the treatment of plasmodium falciparum malaria.to report a case of plasmodium falciparum malaria in which intravenous quinidine was used, resulting in a prolonged qt interval.19957711344
mosquito-transmitted malaria in new york city, 1993.in august, 1993, 3 cases of plasmodium falciparum malaria in people without recent travel histories or bloodborne exposure were reported in new york city. an epidemiological investigation confirmed the absence of risk factors for acquisition of malaria in two cases. the third case could not be definitively classified as locally acquired malaria because the patient had travelled to thailand two years before malaria was diagnosed. the 3 individuals lived in separate houses in the same neighbourhoo ...19957658873

malaria--the mime revisited: fifteen more years of experience at a new york city teaching hospital.purpose and patients: a previous review of the new york hospital experience with malaria during 1968 to 1975 summarized clinical and parasitologic features in 24 travelers and highlighted deficiencies in both chemoprophylaxis and diagnosis. to extend this original study, we describe 86 patients with malaria seen at the same hospital during the subsequent 15 years. results: eighty patients were infected with a single plasmodium species, and 60% had plasmodium falciparum infection primarily acquir ...19921524074
imported malaria in the bronx: review of 51 cases recorded from 1986 to 1991.the cases of 51 patients with malaria seen at the albert einstein college of medicine hospitals from january 1986 to june 1991 are reviewed. thirty-five patients acquired infection on journeys to their country of origin. of these 35 patients, 83% of whom had lived in the united states for > or = 2 years, only 17% received antimalarial prophylaxis. ten of the 51 patients were born and raised in the united states, and 70% received prophylaxis (p < .01). six of the 51 patients were visitors to the ...19921445975
transfusion malaria as a consequence of the 1974 war between turkey and greece--two cases.two cases of transfusion induced plasmodium malariae malaria that occurred in august and september 1974 in new york city were direct results of the outbreak of war between turkey and greece on the island of cyprus in july 1974. the cases could be traced to two greek immigrants with latent infection (one being the longest ever recorded) who independently donated blood after solicitation for people in need living in the country of their ancestors. in view of current rules for donor acceptability, ...1976769569
