dogs in hospital security: an underused and unappreciated protection tool?according to a recent survey by iahss, only 2% of the hospitals surveyed listed dogs among the security tools that they employ. yet, according to hospital security directors who use canines, they can be valuable additions to a security force and accomplish certain tasks better than human officers. in this report, we'll describe the experiences of two midwest hospitals that have used dogs in security for extended periods--one for 10 years, the other for five.199610158709

genetically distinct dog-derived and human-derived sarcoptes scabiei in scabies-endemic communities in northern australia.overcrowding is a significant factor contributing to endemic infection with sarcoptes scabiei in human and animal populations. however, since scabies mites from different host species are indistinguishable morphologically, it is unclear whether people can be infected from scabies-infested animals. molecular fingerprinting was done using three s. scabiei-specific single locus hypervariable microsatellite markers, with a combined total of 70 known alleles. multilocus analysis of 712 scabies mites ...199910548286

emergency and disaster planning at ohio animal shelters.results of a cross-sectional study to determine the level of emergency and disaster response planning at ohio nonhuman animal shelters and the role ohio agencies have in emergency and disaster response planning in their communities indicated a lack of preparedness coupled with underutilization of the agencies as a resource. a total of 115 agencies (68%) responded to a standardized survey mailed to 170 ohio agencies. most (68%) agencies agreed that emergency and disaster response planning was imp ...201020017047
a comparison of veterinary students enrolled and not enrolled in an animal-welfare course.an online survey was conducted to compare 46 veterinary students who previously enrolled in a discussion-based animal-welfare elective with 45 veterinary students who did not take the course. students were asked a series of questions about their attitudes toward animal welfare and were presented with animal-use scenarios that had not previously been discussed in the elective course: greyhound racing, veal calf production, and the use of genetically engineered mice in research. for each scenario, ...201020378877
streptomycetes in house dust: associations with housing characteristics and endotoxin.abstract  in addition to mold, indoor bioaerosols also contain bacterial components that may have implications for human health. endotoxin is a cell wall component in gram-negative bacteria present at varying levels indoors that has been found to have respiratory health implications. streptomyces is a large genus of gram-positive bacteria, and some species have been shown to produce inflammatory reactions in vitro and in vivo. the aim of this study was to determine predictors of streptomycetes l ...201021204988
presumptive meningoencephalitis secondary to extension of otitis media/interna caused by streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus in a cat.a 5-year-old castrated male domestic longhair cat was presented with neurological signs consistent with a central vestibular lesion and left horner's syndrome. computed tomography images revealed hyperattenuating, moderately contrast-enhancing material within the left tympanic bulla, most consistent with left otitis media/interna. marked neutrophilic pleocytosis was identified on cerebrospinal fluid analysis. streptococcus equi subspecies zooepidemicus (sez) was isolated from the cerebrospinal f ...201121640625
Elective and emergency surgical management of adrenal gland tumors: 60 cases (1999-2006).Sixty-one adrenal gland tumors were surgically removed from 60 dogs. Fifty-two dogs underwent elective adrenalectomy and 8 dogs underwent emergency adrenalectomy for acute adrenal hemorrhage. Size of adrenal tumors ranged from 10 mm to 80 mm. Histopathology confirmed a diagnosis of adrenocortical tumor in 47 dogs, 26 of which were malignant. Pheochromocytoma was diagnosed in 11 dogs. Six dogs had tumor invasion of the caudal vena cava. Of the seven dogs that did not survive the perioperative per ...201122058350
traffic-related pollutants and wheezing in children.background and aims. traffic related air pollutants from diesel engine exhaust are found in fine and ultrafine particulates. the cincinnati childrens allergy and air pollution birth cohort study was initiated to determine if early exposure to these pollutants increased risk for development of early atopic sensitization and allergic respiratory disease phenotypes in children. materials and methods. over 700 infants born to at least one atopic parent were recruited to participate in a birth cohort ...201222211400
assessment of coyote-wolf-dog admixture using ancestry-informative diagnostic snps.the evolutionary importance of hybridization as a source of new adaptive genetic variation is rapidly gaining recognition. hybridization between coyotes and wolves may have introduced adaptive alleles into the coyote gene pool that facilitated an expansion in their geographic range and dietary niche. furthermore, hybridization between coyotes and domestic dogs may facilitate adaptation to human-dominated environments. we genotyped 63 ancestry-informative single-nucleotide polymorphisms in 427 ca ...201424148003
