prevalence of toxocara spp. and other parasites in dogs and cats in halifax, nova scotia.several cases of visceral larva migrans syndrome in children led to an investigation of the ova of toxocara spp. and other species in stool specimens from stray dogs and cats in halifax, nova scotia. fecal samples from 474 stray dogs and 299 stray cats were examined. ova of toxocara canis or cati were present in stools from 26.6% of the dogs and 25.1% of the cats. in dogs the prevalence of toxocara canis was noticeably greater in puppies (56.1%) than in mature animals (11.9%).1978647456
review of human and animal cases of coccidioidomycosis diagnosed in canada.the first canadian case of coccidioidomycosis in a human was reported in 1952 and 11 more cases since then. this study provides details of other cases of coccidioidomycosis that have been diagnosed in canada. based on clinical details, isolation of coccidioides immitis, detection of a specific antibody (f band) for coccidioidomycosis by macro- or microimmunodiffusion tests, concurrently used with the complement fixation procedure, and histopathological findings, 116 more cases of this disease we ...19912014046

seroepidemiology of q fever among domestic animals in nova scotia.we used the indirect microimmunofluorescence test to determine the presence of antibodies in sheep, cattle, goat, cat, and dog sera to phase i and ii coxiella burnetii antigens in nova scotia. only 6.7 per cent of the 329 sheep tested had antibodies to phase ii antigen and none had antibodies to phase i. of 29 goats tested, 7 per cent and 3.5 per cent had antibodies to phase ii and phase i antigens, respectively. in contrast, 23.8 per cent of the 214 cattle tested had antibodies to phase ii anti ...19853890569

hypoadrenocorticism in young related nova scotia duck tolling retrievers.five cases of hypoadrenocorticism in young related nova scotia duck tolling retrievers are discussed. two were littermates and the others shared one or more common ancestors. no specific mode of inheritance was determined. clinical and laboratory findings typical of hypoadrenocorticism were observed. further documentation will be required to confirm a breed predisposition.19979105722
natural infections of crenosoma vulpis and angiostrongylus vasorum in dogs in atlantic canada and their treatment with milbemycin oxime.milbemycin oxime was used to treat dogs with natural infections of the fox lungworm, crenosoma vulpis and the french heartworm, angiostrongylus vasorum. crenosomosis was identified in 42 of 202 dogs with clinical signs of coughing, dyspnoea or exercise intolerance by a baermann analysis of faecal samples taken between october 2000 and october 2001. it occurred throughout atlantic canada (new brunswick, newfoundland, nova scotia and prince edward island). the clinical signs resolved and shedding ...200415264484
clinical features and heritability of hypoadrenocorticism in nova scotia duck tolling retrievers: 25 cases (1994-2006).to evaluate the clinical features and heritability of naturally occurring hypoadrenocorticism in nova scotia duck tolling retrievers (nsdtrs).200717669043
use of basal serum or plasma cortisol concentrations to rule out a diagnosis of hypoadrenocorticism in dogs: 123 cases (2000-2005).to determine whether basal serum or plasma cortisol concentration can be used as a screening test to rule out hypoadrenocorticism in dogs.200717669044
presence and impact of the exercise-induced collapse associated dnm1 mutation in labrador retrievers and other breeds.the impact of the mutation causing dynamin 1 (dnm1)-associated exercise-induced collapse (d-eic) was determined in a retrospective genetic survey. the frequency of dnm1 mutant allele carriers in labrador retrievers from conformation show, field trial/hunt test, pet or service lines ranged from 17.9% to 38.0% and the frequency of homozygous mutant (ee genotype) individuals ranged from 1.8% to 13.6%; 83.6% of these ee labradors were reported to have collapsed by 4years of age. dnm1 mutation carrie ...201121782486
surveillance of listeria monocytogenes in human and environmental specimens in nova scotia, 1974 to 1981.we examined specimens for l. monocytogenes using the "cold enrichment" technique of gray et al. (j. bacteriol., 55: 471, 1948) and a nalidixic agar plate (ann. inst. pasteur 111: 90, 1966). between 1974 and may 1981, we isolated l. monocytogenes from four of 5,255 specimens (rectal, vaginal and placental swabs; blood; spinal fluid; semen; necropsy material) which came from eight human populations (neonates, children, adult men, and pregnant and nonpregnant women) and from 161 animals. three of t ...19846442655

examination of candidate genes for hypoadrenocorticism in nova scotia duck tolling retrievers.inherited hypoadrenocorticism occurs in some dog breeds including the nova scotia duck tolling retriever (nsdtr) and is thought to be due to an immune attack on the adrenal glands. the genetic cause of this disorder in dogs has not been identified; however, many genes have been associated with hypoadrenocorticism and other immune-mediated conditions in humans including aire, baff, casp10, cd28, ctla-4, fasl, ptpn22, and tnfrsf6b. microsatellite marker loci were analysed for linkage with the dise ...201119931476
