the isolation of haemophilus somnus following sudden deaths in suckler calves in scotland.a blood or yeast dependent pleomorphic gram-negative bacillus was isolated from the pneumonic lung of a suckled calf which died suddenly. the organism was biochemically similar to american strains of haemophilus somnus and was shown to be serologically similar by rapid slide agglutination, tube agglutination and micro-complement fixation tests. the possible importance of this organism in disease syndromes in cattle in the united kingdom is discussed.1977847871
primary hepatocellular carcinoma in an area of low incidence: evidence for a viral aetiology from routinely collected data.in recent years a strong case has been made in support of a viral aetiology for at least some primary hepatocellular carcinoma (phc) in areas of low incidence. by pooling routinely collected cancer registration and infection data, study of the relationship between hepatitis b virus (hbv) infection and the incidence of phc in scotland over the period 1972-1985 has confirmed this view. over this period the incidence of phc in men increased, there was a relationship between the incidence of notific ...19911648550
a national outbreak of salmonellosis from yeast flavoured products.a national outbreak of salmonellosis caused by a rare serotype occurred between july and november 1989. a total of 40 cases of salmonella manchester infection were identified by the phls division of enteric pathogens with a further 7 cases reported from scotland. the median age of those affected was one year. all strains from the outbreak carried a 70mdal plasmid with a distinctive restriction endonuclease. a statistical association was found between infection and consumption of nationally distr ...19911669764
haplotype analysis in australian hemochromatosis patients: evidence for a predominant ancestral haplotype exclusively associated with hemochromatosis.hemochromatosis (hc), an inherited disorder of iron metabolism, shows a very strong founder effect in australia, with the majority of patients being of celtic (scots/irish) origin. australian hc patients thus provide an ideal group in which to examine hc-gene-region haplotypes, to analyze the extent of linkage disequilibrium and genetic heterogeneity in hc. we have analyzed chromosomes from 26 multiply affected hc pedigrees, and we were able to assign hc status unambiguously to 107 chromosomes-- ...19957847378
physical mapping of a glutamate receptor gene in relation to a balanced translocation associated with schizophrenia in a large scottish family.the metabotropic glutamate receptor subtype 5a (mglur5a) gene has been localised on the gene map of the human genome to chromosome 11q, approximately 1 cm from the genetic marker d11s931. d11s931 has been shown to lie close to a translocation breakpoint associated with schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders in a large scottish family. because glutamate receptor genes are excellent candidates for psychiatric disorders, we have investigated the physical distance of this gene from the transl ...19979460801
a long-range restriction map across 3 mb of the chromosome 11 breakpoint region of a translocation linked to schizophrenia: localization of the breakpoint and the search for neighbouring genes.a balanced t(1;11)(q42.1;q14.3) translocation segregates with schizophrenia and related mental illness in a single large scottish pedigree. we have constructed a long-range restriction map covering at least 3 mb of the chromosome 11 breakpoint region and conducted searches for genes whose expression could be altered by the translocation, resulting in schizophrenia. novel transcribed sequences of unknown function clustered around putative cpg islands, located approximately 500 kb and 700 kb above ...19989800219
a survey of ethnic foods for microbial quality and aflatoxin content.a range of ethnic foods was examined for their microbiological content in relation to total viable counts (tvc) of aerobic bacteria, counts of presumptive coliforms, yeast and mould counts; presence of salmonella spp., listeria monocytogenes, escherichia coli o157:h7 and campylobacter spp.; total enumeration of clostridium perfringens, staphylococcus aureus and bacillus spp.; identification of moulds and the presence of total aflatoxins. samples, which included cereals, nuts, dried fruits, herbs ...200111288910
