prevalence of ibr-bvd-pi3 infections. 1975167273
neonatal respiratory syncytial virus infection.respiratory syncytial virus infections are thought to be uncommon in the first month of life. during a community outbreak, we prospectively studied such infection in our neonatal units. of 82 neonates studied, 66 were hospitalized for six days or longer, and 23 (35 per cent) acquired this virus. four infants died, two unexpectedly. infected infants had a significantly shorter gestation and birth weight. illness was often atypical, with nonspecific signs, especially in infants under three weeks o ...1979759915

noninfluenza respiratory virus infection in long-term care facilities. 19911664843
variation in severity of respiratory syncytial virus infections with subtype.two major subtypes of respiratory syncytial virus have been identified. this study assessed the hypothesis that a-subtype infections were more severe than b-subtype infections among the 157 infants hospitalized in two hospitals in rochester, n.y., during two winters. severity was measured both by specific clinical observations and by a severity index that was derived empirically. among all subjects, several clinical observations suggested that a-subtype infections were more severe. for example, ...19902115082
serologic evidence of respiratory syncytial virus infection in nursing home patients. 19902197348
occurrence of groups a and b of respiratory syncytial virus over 15 years: associated epidemiologic and clinical characteristics in hospitalized and ambulatory children.over 15 years respiratory syncytial virus (rsv) isolates from 1209 hospitalized and ambulatory children were examined for strain group and in a subset for subgroup to determine the associated epidemiologic and clinical characteristics. three patterns of yearly outbreaks existed: (1) strong predominance of group a strains (9 years with 83%-100% a strains), (2) relatively equal proportions of group a and b strains (4 years), and (3) strong predominance of group b strains (78%-85%) in 2 years, sepa ...19902230258
avian paramyxovirus type i infection in pigeons: clinical observations.an outbreak of a neurological disease in pigeons caused by avian paramyxovirus type i occurred in the new york metropolitan area in 1984. it was characterized clinically by head tremors, paresis of the wings and legs, ataxia, torticollis, and loose droppings. clinical pathologic evaluation revealed anemia and elevated plasma transaminase enzymes. mortality was virtually 100% in juvenile pigeons, whereas the adults generally experienced much lower morbidity and mortality.19853833225
severe respiratory disease in dairy cattle in new york state associated with bovine respiratory syncytial virus infection.severe respiratory disease associated with bovine respiratory syncytial virus (brsv) infection has been identified in dairy cattle in new york state. the cases identified occurred in dairy calves and heifers. the disease was characterized in 4 animals by pathologic changes including interstitial pneumonia, necrotizing bronchiolitis with multinucleated syncytial epithelial cells and interstitial emphysema. brsv antigen was demonstrated in lung samples or was isolated in tissue culture in all 4 ca ...19854053607

nosocomial viral infections: ii. guidelines for prevention and control of respiratory viruses, herpesviruses, and hepatitis viruses.this article reviews the most likely mechanisms of transmission of the commonly encountered respiratory viruses (influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, parainfluenza, rhinovirus), herpesviruses, and hepatitis viruses, and presents the guidelines used currently for prevention and control that are in use at strong memorial hospital.19806256306
respiratory syncytial virus-related apnea in infants. demographics and outcome.medical records of 261 hospitalized patients less than 1 year old with documented respiratory syncytial virus (rsv) infection were reviewed to determine the incidence of rsv-associated apnea and the accompanying risk of subsequent apnea or death. apnea in association with rsv infection occurred in 18% of the infants. premature birth and a young postnatal age were risk factors for development of apnea with rsv disease. apnea of prematurity appeared to be a significant risk factor for rsv apnea de ...19846702769
concurrent respiratory syncytial virus and influenza a infections in the institutionalized elderly and chronically ill.during a community outbreak of respiratory syncytial virus and influenza a/texas/77 infections, we investigated 71 cases of upper respiratory illness at a chronic disease hospital using a surveillance system plus viral and serologic studies. of the 32 patients with an etiologic diagnosis, seven had respiratory syncytial virus, 24 had influenza, and one had dual infections with respiratory syncytial virus and influenza. no definite etiologic diagnosis was made in the remaining 39 patients. a comp ...19807396314
phocine distemper in harbor seals (phoca vitulina) from long island, new york.the first occurrence of phocine distemper (pd) disease in harbor seals (phoca vitulina) from the united states is reported. two seals stranded on long island, new york (usa) in february 1992 with clinical signs of respiratory distress, fever, and depression. pneumonia and diffuse pulmonary congestion were the most significant post mortem findings. on histologic examination one seal had a diffuse broncho-interstitial pneumonia with formation of syncytia. the principal lesion in the second animal ...19938355350
antigenic and nucleic acid analysis of nosocomial isolates of respiratory syncytial virus.monoclonal antibodies and ribonuclease protection were used to analyze antigenic and genomic diversity among 42 isolates of group a respiratory syncytial virus (rsv) from studies of nosocomial rsv carried out at the university of rochester during the 1974-1975 and 1975-1976 rsv seasons. three distinct subgroups or lineages and a total of 12 viral variants were present. against this background of diversity, an outbreak was recognized that included 13 indistinguishable isolates occurring during a ...19938440927
outbreak of parainfluenza virus type 3 in a neonatal intensive care unit.parainfluenza virus (piv) causes > 30% of all acute respiratory infections in infants and children and is second only to respiratory syncytial virus as a cause of lower respiratory tract infection. however in the neonatal intensive care unit (nicu), piv outbreaks are highly uncommon. this case report describes an outbreak of 3 cases of piv type 3 in a regional nicu.200919085679
