multinationals and health: reflections on the seveso catastrophe.on july 10, 1976, a cloud of vaporized products containing dioxin escaped from a deposit of a plant of the icmesa firm in the northern suburbs of milan. the fallout was deposited on a vast zone in the municipalities of desio, seveso, meda, and cesano. dioxin was not the desired product of the industrial process, but rather an impurity which generally accompanies trichlorophenol, and, to a smaller extent, the products synthesized from trichlorophenol. among these there are hexachlorophene and the ...1978103846
epidemiological findings in a brain-tumor cluster in western missouri.a cluster of seven primary brain neoplasms was identified in a town of 3000 population during the 10-year period from 1973 to 1982. with six deaths, this represents an age-adjusted mortality rate 4.1 times greater than expected. no other neoplasms were found to be in excess of the anticipated incidence in this town. when brain-tumor mortality rates in 36 other towns of approximately the same population were calculated, only one other town was found to have an excessive rate. all seven tumors in ...19853998835
serologic evidence of infectious bursal disease virus serotype ii infection in minnesota turkeys.serum samples from seven randomly selected minnesota turkey flocks were tested for antibodies to infectious bursal disease virus serotype i (lukert strain, isolated from chickens, and north carolina strain, isolated from turkeys) using a virus-neutralization (vn) test. all flocks were found to have low antibody titers to both lukert and north carolina strains. five out of the seven flocks had high vn titers to the missouri strain, a serotype ii virus isolated from turkeys.19846091608

multistate surveillance for food-handling, preparation, and consumption behaviors associated with foodborne diseases: 1995 and 1996 brfss food-safety questions.in 1995, cdc, the food and drug administration (fda), and several state health departments collaboratively developed questions regarding food safety. this set of questions was used to collect data about food-handling, preparation, and consumption behaviors that have been associated with foodborne diseases in adults. these data will help characterize persons at high risk for foodborne illness and assist in developing food-safety education strategies for consumers and foodhandlers that are intende ...19989750563
a multi-state survey of consumer food-handling and food-consumption practices.in the united states, foodborne infections cause an estimated 6.5-33 million illnesses a year. also included in the burden of foodborne illnesses are sequelae such as hemolytic uremic syndrome, guillain-barré syndrome, and reactive arthritis. surveillance for risky food-handling and food-consumption practices can be used to identify high-risk populations, develop educational efforts, and evaluate progress toward risk reduction.199910198661

use of base excision sequence scanning for detection of genetic variations in st. louis encephalitis virus isolates.twenty-two isolates of st. louis encephalitis (sle) virus of various geographical origins (brazil, argentina, panama, texas, missouri, maryland, california, and florida) were examined for genetic variation by the base excision sequence scanning (bess t-scan) method. a fragment was amplified in the envelope gene with the forward primer labeled in the pcr. the bess t-scan method determined different clusters according to the profiles generated for the isolates and successfully grouped the isolates ...199910325350
from the centers for disease control and prevention. salmonellosis associated with chicks and ducklings--michigan and missouri, spring 1999. 200010807370
salmonellosis associated with chicks and ducklings--michigan and missouri, spring 1999.during the spring of 1999, outbreaks of salmonellosis associated with handling chicks and ducklings occurred in michigan and missouri. this report summarizes the epidemiologic information for the outbreaks and provides an overview of legislative efforts to control the distribution of chicks and ducklings. these outbreaks demonstrate that handling chicks and ducklings is a health risk, especially for children, and highlight the need for thorough handwashing after contact with chicks, ducklings, a ...200010825085
outbreak of cyclosporiasis associated with basil in missouri in 1999.during the summer of 1999, an outbreak of cyclosporiasis occurred among attendees of 2 events held on 24 july in different counties in missouri. we conducted retrospective cohort studies of the 2 clusters of cases, which comprised 62 case patients. the chicken pasta salad served at one event (relative risk [rr], 4.25; 95% confidence interval [ci], 1.80-10.01) and the tomato basil salad served at the other event (rr, 2.95; 95% ci, 1.72-5.07) were most strongly associated with illness. the most li ...200111264028
histoplasmosis in aids: advances in management.histoplasmosis is one of the most common opportunistic infections in hiv-infected patients who reside in endemic areas, and "imported infections" also occur elsewhere. a recent decline in the incidence of histoplasmosis appears to correlate with advances in antiretroviral therapy. histoplasmosis occurs due to either dissemination of newly acquired infection or reactivation of latent foci of infection. major risk factors include a cd4 count < or = 150/microl, positive complement fixation serology ...199811362022
mortality in workers in poultry slaughtering/processing plants: the missouri poultry cohort study.subjects who work in poultry slaughtering and processing plants have one of the highest human exposures to viruses that cause cancer in chickens and turkeys. it is not known whether these viruses cause cancer in humans also. epidemiological studies investigating this issue are scarce.200314504369
pancreatitis in wild zinc-poisoned waterfowl.four waterfowl were collected in the tri-state mining district (oklahoma, kansas and missouri, usa), an area known to be contaminated with lead, cadmium and zinc (zn). they were part of a larger group of 20 waterfowl collected to determine the exposure of birds to metal contamination at the site. the four waterfowl (three branta canadensis, one anas platyrhynchos) had mild to severe degenerative abnormalities of the exocrine pancreas, as well as tissue (pancreas, liver) concentrations of zn that ...200314676018
update of cancer and non-cancer mortality in the missouri poultry cohort.workers in poultry slaughtering and processing plants have one of the highest human exposures to transmissible agents that cause cancer and other diseases in chickens and turkeys, and also have other occupational carcinogenic exposures. the general population is also exposed to these transmissible agents.201120979123
identification and characterization of h2n3 avian influenza virus from backyard poultry and comparison with novel h2n3 swine influenza virus.in early 2007, h2n3 influenza virus was isolated from a duck and a chicken in two separate poultry flocks in ohio. since the same subtype influenza virus with hemagglutinin (h) and neuraminidase (n) genes of avian lineage was also identified in a swine herd in missouri in 2006, the objective of this study was to characterize and compare the genetic, antigenic, and biologic properties of the avian and swine isolates. avian isolates were low pathogenic by in vivo chicken pathogenicity testing. seq ...201122312981
