cervical cancer prevention: new tools and old barriers.cervical cancer is the second most common female tumor worldwide, and its incidence is disproportionately high (>80%) in the developing world. in the united states, in which papanicolaou (pap) tests have reduced the annual incidence to approximately 11,000 cervical cancers, >60% of cases are reported to occur in medically underserved populations as part of a complex of diseases linked to poverty, race/ethnicity, and/or health disparities. because carcinogenic human papillomavirus (hpv) infection ...201020310056
the sociocultural context of gynecological health among haitian immigrant women in florida: applying ethnographic methods to public health inquiry.twalet deba, a culturally mediated feminine hygiene practice, is widespread in little haiti, the predominately haitian neighborhood in miami, florida. this practice may have important implications for susceptibility to sexually transmitted infections, including human papillomavirus, the principal cause of cervical cancer. previous research has not examined the full context of twalet deba in consideration of cultural beliefs and norms about women's hygiene and sexual health.201020379893
cervical cancer screening among ethnically diverse black women: knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and practices.this is a descriptive study of cervical cancer screening knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and practices among ethnically diverse black women. we conducted 6 focus groups with haitian, african, english-speaking caribbean, and african american women recruited from a federally qualified health center. overall, there was limited knowledge and confusion across ethnic groups about cervical cancer and its risk factors, the pap test, and the human papilloma virus (hpv) and its association with cervical ca ...201122046849
The Effect of HIV and HPV Coinfection on Cervical COX-2 Expression and Systemic Prostaglandin E2 Levels.Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) infection causes chronic inflammation. COX-2-derived prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) has been linked to both inflammation and carcinogenesis. We hypothesized that HIV-1 could induce COX-2 in cervical tissue and increase systemic PGE(2) levels and that these alterations could play a role in AIDS-related cervical cancer. Levels of cervical COX-2 mRNA and urinary PGE-M, a biomarker of systemic PGE(2) levels, were determined in 17 HIV-negative women with a negative c ...201122135046
one size does not fit all: differences in hpv knowledge between haitian and african american women.historically, all black persons, regardless of ancestry or country of origin, have been categorized as one group for cancer research and control efforts. this practice likely masks variability in exposure to determinants of disease, as well as in risk of cancer incidence and mortality. the current study examines potential differences in knowledge of human papilloma virus (hpv) between haitian women living in little haiti, miami, florida, and a national sample of predominately african american wo ...201020142238
