[primary surveillance of spotted fever group antibodies on rats in the kinmen area].the positive rate of rickettsial antibodies of 107 rats in the kinmen area by indirect immunofluorescent antibody (ifa) technique was 0% (0/107) in typhus fever, 38.3% (41/107) in scrub typhus and 66.4% (71/107) in spotted fever group; the positive rate (42.9%) of spotted fever group of 21 rats in taiwan island also higher than scrub typhus (19.0). it suggests that spotted fever group patients may be present in our country but have not been discovered.199710592817
molecular detection and characterization of spotted fever group rickettsiae in taiwan.rickettsioses are emerging infectious diseases caused by rickettsiae in association with arthropods. we report the detection of spotted fever group rickettsiae (sfgr) in taiwan using molecular methods. phylogenetic analyses of the 17-kd protein and citrate synthase (glta) genes showed that sfgr twkm01 detected in rhipicephalus haemaphysaloides ticks was most similar to rickettsia rhipicephali. three twkm01 isolates were obtained from three individual r. haemaphysaloides ticks. small, intracellul ...200717984347
isolation and identification of a novel spotted fever group rickettsia, strain ig-1, from ixodes granulatus ticks collected on orchid island (lanyu), taiwan.a novel species of spotted fever group (sfg) rickettsia, rickettsia spp. ig-1, was identified and isolated from adult ixodes granulatus ticks collected from orchid island (lanyu), an islet located in southeastern taiwan. serum samples collected from the rodent host rattus losea and sfg-positive human serum reacted with ig-1 using an immunofluorescence assay (ifa). pairwise nucleotide sequence analysis of 16s rrna (rrs), glta, ompa, ompb, and sca4 shows that ig-1 belongs to sfg rickettsiae and ha ...200818689633
african tick bite fever in a taiwanese traveler returning from south africa: molecular and serologic studies.we report the first imported case of african tick bite fever (atbf) in a patient from taiwan who returned from a 10-day trip to south africa. diagnosis was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (pcr) from eschar biopsies. portions of rickettsial ompa (491 bp) and ompb (273 bp) genes were amplified and subsequent sequencing of pcr product showed its 100% identity with r. africae. microimmunofluorescence (mif) assay of patient's serum on days 14 and 46 after the onset of illness revealed igg sero ...200919861602
identification of potential hosts and vectors of scrub typhus and tick-borne spotted fever group rickettsiae in eastern taiwan.scrub typhus and tick-borne spotted fever group (sfg) rickettsioses are transmitted by chiggers (larval trombiculid mites) and hard ticks, respectively. we assessed exposure to these disease vectors by extensively sampling both chiggers and ticks and their small mammal hosts in eastern taiwan during 2007 and 2008. the striped field mouse apodemus agrarius pallas (rodentia: muridae) was the most common of the small mammals (36.1% of 1393 captures) and presented the highest rate of infestation wit ...201121223345
