eimeria zapi sp. n. from the meadow jumping mouse, zapus hudsonius zimmerman in southwestern michigan.four of 5 meadow jumping mice (zapus hudsonius) captured had in their feces a previously undescribed species of eimeria which is named eimeria zapi sp. n. the sporulated oocysts measured 21.7 (19.5-24.0) x 20.3 (17.5-23.0) micrometer. the single-layered oocyst wall was 1.5 micrometer thick, rough, pitted and appeared clear-to-amber. usually 2 polar granules could be seen. an oocyst residuum was not observed. each sporocyst averaged 16.0 (12.5-18.0) x 9.7 (7.5-11.5)micrometer. a substiedal body w ...1977915841
experimental inoculation of meadow voles (microtus pennsylvanicus), house mice (mus musculus), and norway rats (rattus norvegicus) with mycobacterium bovis.mycobacterium bovis has a wide host range that includes several wildlife species, and this can hamper attempts to eradicate bovine tuberculosis from livestock. the purpose of this study was to determine if common rodent species, namely meadow voles (microtus pennsylvanicus), house mice (mus musculus), and norway rats (rattus norvegicus), that inhabit the bovine tuberculosis endemic area of michigan, can be experimentally infected with m. bovis. the objectives of the study were: 1) to determine i ...200717699074
microsatellite genetic structure and cytonuclear discordance in naturally fragmented populations of deer mice (peromyscus maniculatus).the great lakes impose high levels of natural fragmentation on local populations of terrestrial animals in a way rarely found within continental ecosystems. although separated by major water barriers, woodland deer mouse (peromyscus maniculatus gracilis) populations on the islands and on the upper peninsula (up) and lower peninsula (lp) of michigan have previously been shown to have a mitochondrial dna contact zone that is incongruent with the regional landscape. we analyzed 11 microsatellite lo ...201221976772
plasminogen activator inhibitor type-1 (pai-1) polymorphism 4g/5g is associated with prostate cancer among men with a positive family history.variation in the expression of plasminogen activator inhibitor type-1 (pai-1) is associated with many human diseases, including several types of cancer. in particular, tumor cell overexpression of pai-1 has been found to inhibit prostate cancer tumor growth, angiogenesis, and metastasis in mouse models. normal host cell expression of pai-1 is influenced by the 4g/5g insertion/deletion polymorphism in the promoter region of the pai-1 gene. to evaluate the effect of pai-1 expression on cancer deve ...200717044080

outbreaks of pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in colonies of immunodeficient mice.outbreaks of pneumocystis carinii pneumonia occurred in colonies of nu/nu and scid/scid mice at four different institutions. the disease, which was characterized by chronic wasting and respiratory insufficiency, was more severe in older mice and in animals housed in cages with special protective tops. histopathologic features included alveolar filling with the typical foamy honeycomb material and a mild, nonspecific host inflammatory response. immunofluorescence and immunoblotting studies sugges ...19892642471
