the epidemiology of toxoplasmosis on iowa swine farms with an emphasis on the roles of free-living mammals.multiparous sows from 19 central iowa swine farms were tested for antibodies against toxoplasma gondii by the modified direct agglutination test. antibody titers of 1:32 or greater were considered positive. rodents, domestic cats, opossums (didelphis virginiana), raccoons (procyon lotor) and striped skunks (mephitis mephitis) were live-trapped on each farm and similarly tested for antibodies. the overall prevalence of t. gondii antibodies in the species tested was 39/273 (14.3%) swine, 31/74 (41 ...19921496780
detection and ecology of leptospirosis in iowa wildlife.to gain additional information on the extent of leptospirosis in wildlife following a human outbreak in iowa, wild mammals and lower forms of life were collected. isolation, darkfield microscopic, serologic and pathologic procedures were used to identify past or present evidence of leptospiral infection. leptospires were isolated from 7 of 75 (9%) mammals. serotype grippotyphosa was isolated from three raccoons (procyon lotor) and one western harvest mouse (reithrodontomys megalotis). serotype b ...197016512128
prevalence of bordetella bronchiseptica in certain central iowa.bordetella bronchiseptica was isolated from 6 of 13 short-tailed shrews (blarina brevicauda) and 1 of 47 house sparrows (passer domesticus) trapped in the vicinity of a swine bordetella rhinitis experimental area. the organism was found in four of 50 foxes (vulpes fulva), 2 of 36 opossums (didelphis marsupialis) and 1 of 37 raccoons (procyon lotor) trapped in the ames, iowa area. this bacterium was not culturally isolated from 14 deer mice (peromyscus maniculatus), 64 house mice (mus musculus), ...197616502690
toxicoinfectious botulism in commercial caponized chickens.during the summer of 2003, two flocks of commercial broiler chickens experienced unusually high death losses following caponizing at 3 wk of age and again between 8 and 14 wk of age. in september, fifteen 11-wk-old live capons were submitted to the iowa state university veterinary diagnostic laboratory for assistance. in both flocks, the second episode of elevated mortality was associated with incoordination, flaccid paralysis of leg, wing, and neck muscles, a recumbent body posture characterize ...200516094840
pathogenic effects of cerebral amyloid angiopathy mutations in the amyloid beta-protein precursor.cerebral amyloid beta-protein angiopathy (caa) is a key pathological feature of patients with alzheimer's disease and certain related disorders. several mutations have been identified within the abeta region of the abeta protein precursor (abetapp) gene that appear to enhance the severity of caa. a new mutation has been identified within the abeta region (d23n) of abetapp that is associated with severe caa in an iowa kindred. recently, we showed that e22q dutch, d23n iowa, and e22q/d23n dutch/io ...200212480759
pseudoachondroplastic dysplasia: an iowa review from human to mouse.lamellar inclusions of the rough endoplasmic reticulum in growth plate chondrocytes, first identified (1972) in the department of orthopaedic surgery, university of iowa, has become the cytochemical hallmark for the pseudoachondroplastic dysplasia (psach) phenotype, linking an endoplasmic reticulum storage disorder with the osteochondrodysplasia. since this original observation, great advances have been made, leading to the molecular understanding of this altered longitudinal bone growth anomaly ...199910847517
analysis of select folate pathway genes, pax3, and human t in a midwestern neural tube defect population.neural tube defects (ntds) are a common birth defect, seen in approximately 1/1,000 births in the united states. ntds are considered a complex trait where several genes, interacting with environmental factors, create the phenotype. using a midwestern ntd population consisting of probands, parents, and siblings from iowa, minnesota, and nebraska, we analyzed a range of candidate genes, including 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (mthfr), folate receptors-alpha (folr1; hereafter abbreviated ...199910332959
demonstration of rabies virus-specific antibody in the sera of free-ranging iowa raccoons (procyon lotor).between 1984 and 1988, a study was conducted to evaluate the frequency of rabies virus neutralizing antibodies in raccoons (procyon lotor) in two counties in iowa. nine hundred eighty five raccoons were trapped and tagged in guthrie and cerro gordo counties during the spring, summer and fall of each year. sex, age and weight were recorded for each animal and a blood sample was collected. serum samples were tested for the presence of serum neutralizing antibodies (sna) by the rapid fluorescent fo ...19921512869
analyses of cytogenetic damage in rodents following exposure to simulated groundwater contaminated with pesticides and a fertilizer.male fischer 344 rats and female b6c3f1 mice were each exposed through their drinking water to a mixture of pesticides and ammonium nitrate that simulated contaminated groundwater in california (california chemical mixture [ccm]). exposures were for 71 or 91 days, respectively. in addition, b6c3f1 female mice were exposed for 91 days to another pesticide and ammonium nitrate mixture (iowa chemical mixture [icm]) through their drinking water. the spleens were removed from the animals, and the spl ...19937685493
