bacteria and helminth isolates from bile and faeces of zebu cattle slaughtered for human consumption in the niger delta areas of nigeria.random bacteriological examination of 300 bile samples aseptically drawn from the gallbladders of adult cattle at slaughter revealed the presence of escherichia coli in 30%, enterobacter aerogenes in 14% and klebsiella aerogenes in 56%. bacteriological examination of another 116 faecal samples revealed esch. coli in 60% and ent. aerogenes in 40%, while parasitological examination revealed 50-100 strongyle ova per gram from pre-rain samples of faeces, 100-850 strongyle eggs per gram for faeces co ...19863539044
prevalence of hydatid cysts in domestic livestock in the niger delta.the prevalence of infection with hydatid cysts in pigs, cattle, sheep and goats in the niger delta area of nigeria studied over a 10-month period was generally high; 56% in pigs, 42% in goats, 32% in cattle and 24% in sheep. this high prevalence rate is probably related to the socio-economic factors prevalent in the area. the high prevalence and viability of the cysts in pigs and cattle suggests that the strain of echinococcus present in this area differs from those reported elsewhere.19853992669
the prevalence and public health significance of toxoplasma gondii in indigenous meat animals in the niger delta.the prevalence of toxoplasma gondii in indigenous meat animals in the niger delta area of nigeria was measured by serological examination of antibody using the sabin-feldman dye-test. of 300 each of cattle, sheep, goats and pigs examined, 32.8%, 75.2%, 81.6% and 69.2% respectively, possessed significant antibody titres. these results indicate that there exists within meat animals in this area, a considerable reservoir of toxoplasma which has the potential for transmission as zoonosis to man.19846464188
retrospective genetic analysis of sat-1 type foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks in west africa (1975-1981).the complete 1d genome region encoding the immunogenic and phylogenetically informative vp1 gene was genetically characterized for 23 south african territories (sat)-1 viruses causing foot-and-mouth (fmd) disease outbreaks in the west african region between 1975 and 1981. the results indicate that two independent outbreaks occurred, the first involved two west african countries, namely niger and nigeria, whilst the second affected nigeria alone. in the former epizootic, virus circulation spanned ...200312713891
