heterogeneity of the woodchuck hepatitis virus genome in a chronically infected woodchuck.the nucleotide sequence of an isolate of woodchuck hepatitis virus (whv) from the serum of a woodchuck trapped in new york state (whvny) was compared with the sequences of previously published isolates. the nucleotide sequence of whvny was closest to that of an isolate originating from new jersey: the two genomes shared a 15 nucleotide in-frame deletion in the region where the presurface and polymerase genes overlap (nucleotides 3260-3274) and differed by 54 point mutations (1.6% of genome). ami ...19938488722
genetic variation between woodchuck populations with high and low prevalence rates of woodchuck hepatitis virus infection.woodchuck hepatitis virus (whv) infection is known to be endemic in areas of the mid-atlantic states but is apparently absent from populations in new york and much of new england. blood samples of 40 woodchucks (marmota monax) from new york and from delaware were examined by starch gel electrophoresis, and 18 monomorphic and six polymorphic protein-coding genetic systems were identified. mendelian inheritance of variants of the six polymorphic systems was confirmed in 52 laboratory offspring of ...19873586195
congestive cardiomyopathy in the woodchuck, marmota monax.congestive cardiomyopathy was diagnosed during post mortem examination in eight of 149 adult woodchucks from new york. the eight woodchucks, four males and four females, died spontaneously without clinical signs of heart failure having been detected. the primary lesion was a grossly enlarged and dilated heart. histologic lesions consisted of multifocal myocardial degeneration and necrosis. secondary lesions of congestive heart failure were observed.19863503140
increased recognition of powassan encephalitis in the united states, 1999-2005.powassan virus (powv) disease is a rare human disease caused by a tick-borne encephalitis group flavivirus maintained in a transmission cycle between ixodes cookei and other ixodid ticks and small and medium-sized mammals. during 1958-1998, only 27 powv disease cases (mostly powassan encephalitis) were reported from eastern canada and the northeastern united states (average, 0.7 cases per year). during 1999-2005, nine cases (described herein) of serologically confirmed powv disease were reported ...200818959500
isolation of deer tick virus (powassan virus, lineage ii) from ixodes scapularis and detection of antibody in vertebrate hosts sampled in the hudson valley, new york state.deer tick virus, dtv, is a genetically and ecologically distinct lineage of powassan virus (powv) also known as lineage ii powv. human incidence of pow encephalitis has increased in the last 15 years potentially due to the emergence of dtv, particularly in the hudson valley of new york state. we initiated an extensive sampling campaign to determine whether powv was extant throughout the hudson valley in tick vectors and/or vertebrate hosts.201324016533
prevalence of cryptosporidium species in wildlife populations within a watershed landscape in southeastern new york state.a cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the prevalence of cryptosporidium in wildlife in the new york city (nyc) watershed in southeastern new york state. a total of 6227 fecal samples were collected and evaluated from 5892 mammals (38 species), 263 birds (14 species), 2 reptiles (2 species), 8 amphibians (4 species), and 62 fish (15 species). cryptosporidium was detected in 30 species. of the species found positive for cryptosporidium, 16 represented new records for this parasite-alo ...200717466459
potential role of deer tick virus in powassan encephalitis cases in lyme disease-endemic areas of new york, u.s.a.powassan virus, a member of the tick-borne encephalitis group of flaviviruses, encompasses 2 lineages with separate enzootic cycles. the prototype lineage of powassan virus (powv) is principally maintained between ixodes cookei ticks and the groundhog (marmota momax) or striped skunk (mephitis mephitis), whereas the deer tick virus (dtv) lineage is believed to be maintained between ixodes scapularis ticks and the white-footed mouse (peromyscus leucopus). we report 14 cases of powassan encephalit ...201324274334
serologic survey of woodchuck hepatitis virus in north carolina woodchucks (marmota monax).the prevalence of woodchuck hepatitis virus (whv) in wild populations of woodchucks is understudied and therefore unclear. although infection is common in the southeastern region of pennsylvania and surrounding states, it is virtually absent in new york and new england. sera were collected from wild woodchucks from orange county, north carolina and tested for the presence of markers of current or previous infection with whv. of the 24 woodchucks tested, there were three animals (12.5%) with whv ...200818634221
serologic evidence of leptospirosis in woodchucks (marmota monax) in central new york state.serum samples from 153 woodchucks (marmota monax) from tompkins county, new york, obtained in 1976 and 1977, were examined by plate agglutination tests for antibodies against five leptospira antigens. fourteen sera showed significant titers against either l. hardjo, l. icterohemorrhagiae and/or l. pomona. reactions against l. hardjo were the most frequent. woodchucks collected from two dairy farms with histories of bovine leptospirosis did not have a greater prevalence of antibodies than woodchu ...1979480515
rabies and cerebrospinal nematodosis in woodchucks (marmota monax) from new york.abnormal behavior, suggestive of rabies, is not an unusual finding in woodchucks (marmota monax). necropsy records, rabies antibody tests, and necropsy examinations performed by the authors indicate that migration of ascarid larvae usually is responsible for the abnormal behavior, and that rabies is an infrequent finding. baermannization of brain tissue is suggested for a differential diagnosis.1978668397
dermatophilus congolensis infections in wildlife in new york state.dermatophilus congolensis infection is described for the first time in a woodchuck (marmota monax) and a striped skunk (mephitis mephitis). this actinomycete was also recovered from a raccoon (procyon lotor) carcass which had been frozen for a year. encrusted lesions or denuded patches or both were seen during necropsy on the head, thorax, abdomen, and legs of each carcass. d. congolensis was demonstrated in strained smears or paraffin sections or both from the three animals and was recovered fr ...19817334073
