status of insecticide resistance in culex pipiens field populations from north-eastern areas of italy before the withdrawal of op compounds.heavy and constant use of organophosphorus (op) larvicides selected culex pipiens l. resistant populations through two main mechanisms of genetic resistance, the increased activity of detoxifying esterase and the production of alterate acetylcholinesterase-1 (ache1) by g119s mutation. the aim of this study was the assessment of the distribution of cx. pipiens populations resistant to temephos and chlorpyrifos in the north-eastern regions of italy and the occurrence of the insensitive ache in the ...201021162149
usutu virus in italy: an emergence or a silent infection?a two year study (2008-2009) was carried out to monitor the usutu virus (usuv) circulation in italy. sentinel horses and chickens, wild birds and mosquitoes were sampled and tested for the presence of usuv and usuv antibodies within the wnd national surveillance plan. seroconversion evidenced in sentinel animals proved that in these two years the virus has circulated in tuscany, emilia romagna, veneto and friuli venezia giulia regions. in veneto usuv caused a severe blackbird die-off disease inv ...201121550731
mechanisms of insecticide resistance in field populations of culex pipiens from italy.results of a study on organophosphate (op) resistance carried out on 4 italian field populations of culex pipiens are reported. the a1, a4-b4 and/or a5-b5 nonspecific esterases and insensitive acetylcholinesterase (ache) were detected in our samples. a2-b2 esterases previously recorded in italy were not observed. the a4-b4 and/or a5-b5 esterases were first found in italy where they are at present widespread. both nonspecific esterases and insensitive ache are involved in op resistance, although ...19937688795
