serological detection of circulating angiostrongylus vasorum antigen and specific antibodies in dogs from central and northern italy.the most frequently employed method for the diagnosis of angiostrongylus vasorum in dogs is the detection of first stage larvae (l1) in faeces. the sensitivity of coproscopy, however, is limited in case of low parasite load, intermittent larval excretion, and during pre-patency. an epidemiological survey on dogs was conducted applying serological methods in two italian regions where angiostrongylosis is endemic in foxes. 265 dog serum samples from tuscany (central italy - site a) and 447 from li ...201323182301
dirofilariasis due to dirofilaria repens in italy, an emergent zoonosis: report of 60 new cases.sixty new cases of human dirofilariasis due to dirofilaria repens, occurring in italy between 1990 and 1999, are presented. this is the most extensive case study of this zoonosis reported worldwide by a single study group. the aim is to utilize this large experience to characterize the different histopathological findings in the parasitic lesions in man.200111318900
[filariasis in foxes in the province of grosseto].a total of 350 foxes were examined in grosseto province (tuscany) and 68 (19,4%) have been found positive for microfilariae. the examination for adult forms has been carried out on a restricted number of foxes; one specimen of dirofilaria repens has been found. the distribution of parasitosis and the presence of mosquito species, as possible vectors, has been discussed.19806112940
[human muscle dirofilariasis of difficult diagnosis].a case of dirofilariasis by dirofilaria repens localized in the left temporalis muscle, in a 43-year-old woman, is described. it was acquired in south-western sicily but became apparent in pisa. it is the seventh case of human dirofilariasis reported from this area, confirming the existence of an endemic focus. in spite of the numerous investigations to identify clinically the illness (needle-aspirate, echography, ctscan) the diagnosis was possible only upon discovery of the nematode in the hist ...19968927459
[human subcutaneous dirofilariasis: 8 more cases in italy].eight new cases of human subcutaneous dirofilariasis due to dirofilaria repens in subjects aged 14 to 83 years, 5 men and 3 women, are recorded. the patients were living in piedmont (5 cases), tuscany (1), friuli-venetia julia (1) and apulia (1). the nematodes were immature in 6 cases (2 males and 4 females) and adults in 2 (both females). microfilariae in the uterus of one of them were detected.19968927458
human subcutaneous dirofilariasis. 2. a report of 5 new cases of dirofilaria repens in central and northern italy and of a sixth case with uncertain parasitological diagnosis.six new human cases of subcutaneous filariasis (histological sections) in lombardia, emilia-romagna and toscana are described. five of them are to attribute to dirofilaria repens, whereas some doubts exist with regard to one case. the findings are compared with histological sections of male and female specimens of d. repens and d. immitis recovered from naturally infected dogs.19826926933
