blockage of urethral catheters by bacterial biofilms.we report the case of a 63-year-old woman whose indwelling urethral catheter became blocked regularly at 4-5 day intervals over a period of 10 weeks. 'worm-like' structures 25-30 cm in length were found either in the catheter, completely occluding the lumen, or in the drainage tube thereby blocking the valve of the drainage bag. electron microscopy showed that these structures were composed of bacteria, while culture revealed them to be mixed communities of pseudomonas aeruginosa, escherichia co ...19938228293
molecular characterization of clinical and environmental isolates of vancomycin-resistant enterococcus faecium and enterococcus faecalis from a teaching hospital in wales.the present study describes the first molecular characterization of environmental and clinical isolates of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (vre) in wales. over a 3-month period (may-july 2000), 134 isolates of vre (89 enterococcus faecium and 45 enterococcus faecalis) were isolated from the patient environment of the university hospital of wales (uhw) in cardiff, wales, uk. in addition, over the same time-period, 24 clinical isolates of vre (20 isolates of e. faecium and four isolates of e. fae ...200312909661

water and non-water-related risk factors for gastroenteritis among bathers exposed to sewage-contaminated marine waters.all previously published epidemiological studies of the health effects of bathing in marine waters contaminated with domestic sewage contain three major methodological weaknesses in study design: (1) failure to control for the substantial amount of temporal and spatial variation in indicator organism densities shown to occur within just a few hours at marine water bathing locations; (2) failure to relate indicator organism density directly to the individual bather; and (3) failure to rigorously ...19938225746
streptococcal infection in young pigs. iv. an outbreak of streptococcal meningitis in weaned pigs.twenty-eight pigs died in an outbreak of streptococcal meningitis in an east anglian herd. most were 10-14 weeks old. the outbreak lasted from january to april and was finally controlled by antibiotic therapy. a similar number of losses had occurred in the previous year though no diagnosis had then been made. the causal agent appeared to be a haemolytic streptococcus belonging to group d and provisionally designated streptococcus suis type 2. it is probably identical with de moor's group r strep ...1975807620
