genetic variation within and relatedness among wood and plains bison populations.there are two recognized subspecies of bison, wood (bison bison athabascae) and plains (bison bison bison) bison. the establishment of most bison populations from a small number of individuals has raised concerns about their genetic variation. to this end, 11 bison populations were surveyed with 11 microsatellite loci in order to calculate genetic variation and genetic distances. mean number of alleles ranged between 3.18 at antelope island state park (utah) and 6.55 at wood buffalo national par ...199910382295
molecular characterization of coprophilous fungal communities reveals sequences related to root-associated fungal endophytes.this paper reports the use of molecular methods to characterize the coprophilous fungal communities (cfc) that inhabit the dung of four species of mammalian herbivores at two sites, sevilleta national wildlife refuge (snwr) in new mexico and wind cave national park (wcnp) in south dakota. results reveal that cfc from domesticated cattle (bos taurus) at snwr, and bison (bison bison) and black-tailed prairie dogs (cynomys ludovicianus) at wcnp were diverse but dominated primarily by members within ...201120842497
malignant catarrhal fever in bison.malignant catarrhal fever was diagnosed in 3 herds of american bison (bison bison) in south dakota from 1973 to 1976. clinical signs included depression, nasal and ocular discharge, conjunctivitis and keratitis, and diarrhea. herd morbidity ranged from 3 to 53.8%, and mortality was 100%. at necropsy, ulcerative lesions were found throughout the alimentary tract, trachea, and bronchi. microscopically, necrotizing vasculitis without thrombosis was found in virtually every organ examined.1977562870
synlophe in ostertagia cf. kasakhstanica (nematoda: ostertagiinae), the minor morphotype of o. bisonis from western north america.ostertagia cf. kasakhstanica, the putative minor morphotype of the polymorphic ostertagiine o. bisonis, is reported in bison bison from south dakota. descriptions of the synlophe and details of other diagnostic characters useful in identification and differentiation of this minor morphotype from other ostertagiines in wild and domestic ruminants from western north america are presented. laterally, the cervical synlophe is consistent with type ib pattern among ostertagiines and is within the rang ...200111695392
chemical immobilization of free-ranging north american bison (bison bison) in badlands national park, south dakota.twenty-six free-ranging north american bison (bison bison) (22 adult bulls, one yearling male and three adult females) were immobilized using a combination of carfentanil and xylazine. for carfentanil the dose range (mean +/- sd) was 1.8-5.0 micrograms/kg (2.4 +/- 0.7 micrograms/kg) and for xylazine 0.004-0.125 mg/kg (0.07 +/- 0.03 mg/kg). induction time (mean +/- se) was 14.2 +/- 2.9 min (median 8 min), while the total mean reversal time after administration of a narcotic antagonist was 9.0 +/- ...19873682089
