age-related prevalence of strongyloides stercoralis infection in okinawa, japan.age-prevalence of strongyloides stercoralis infection was studied in six areas of okinawa, japan. in all localities, most of the infected inhabitants were aged over 40 years of age and females were less infected than males. the peak prevalence was found in inhabitants in their fifties in high endemic groups and shifted to higher age in lower endemic groups. this age-prevalence pattern resembles more that of schistosome infections than that of other gastrointestinal helminthic infections.19921295137
is the prevalence of htlv-1 infection higher in strongyloides carriers than in non-carriers?to assess the concomitance of strongyloidiasis and htlv-1 infection, an epidemiological survey was conducted in okinawa, japan, using the agar-plate culture, a highly sensitive method for detection of strongyloides stercoralis. no significant difference in the positive rate of anti-htlv-1 antibody was found between strongyloides carriers and non-carriers. this result suggests that these two infections occur independently.19921470843
epidemiological aspects of strongyloides stercoralis infection in okinawa, japan.the epidemiology of strongyloides stercoralis infection was compared among three localities with various prevalences of human t lymphotropic virus type 1 (htlv-1) infection in okinawa prefecture, japan, using agar-plate culture of faeces. the prevalence of s. stercoralis infection is much higher in gusukube, where htlv-1 infection is rare, than in yomitan, where this viral infection is common. in all localities the parasite prevalence is significantly higher in males than in females, whereas the ...19921597879
[recent features of parasites detected from clinical specimens].it is generally considered that we have already been through with problems caused by various kinds of parasites which had once raged throughout the country. on the contrary to our common concept, we occasionally encounter some kinds of parasites in a laboratory as well as in clinical fields, which have become unfamiliar to us in these days. parasitic diseases are in the first place, proper and limited to certain local regions, but the present situation has been greatly changed. nowadays, specifi ...19968847822
correlation between human t cell lymphotropic virus type-1 and strongyloides stercoralis infections and serum immunoglobulin e responses in residents of okinawa, japan.to clarify the relationship between strongyloides stercoralis, infection with human t cell lymphotropic virus type-1 (htlv-1), and serum immunoglobulin e (ige) levels, epidemiologic investigations of these two infections were conducted in inhabitants of okinawa, a subtropical zone in japan. blood and feces samples were taken from 1,347 healthy inhabitants (554 males and 793 females). antibody to htlv-1 was measured by particle agglutination, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and western blottin ...19979063365
extensive intra-alveolar haemorrhage caused by disseminated strongyloidiasis.we describe here four cases of disseminated strongyloidiasis. in okinawa, it has been reported that about 10% of the residents are infected with strongyloides stercoralis, but disseminated cases are rare. detailed histopathological examination revealed that the present four cases could clearly be separated into two groups, two acute cases and two subacute cases. the acute cases died rapidly due to extensive diffuse intra-alveolar haemorrhage in both lungs. however, there were no inflammatory inf ...19989512996
comparative studies on the efficacy of three anthelminthics on treatment of human strongyloidiasis in okinawa, japan.a study was undertaken to compare the efficacy of three drugs in the treatment of uncomplicated strongyloidiasis in okinawa, japan. two hundred and eleven patients with confirmed strongyloides stercoralis infection were given either ivermectin, 6 mg in a single dose, albendazole, 400 mg/day for 3 days or pyrvinium pamoate, 5 mg/kg/day for 3 days. for each treatment, the same regimen was repeated once 2 weeks later. efficacy was evaluated at 2 weeks, 6 months and 12 months after the second course ...200011023084
impairment of host immune response against strongyloides stercoralis by human t cell lymphotropic virus type 1 infection.a large-scale study was undertaken to clarify the prevalence rate of strongyloidiasis in okinawa, japan and to evaluate the relationship between strongyloidiasis and infection with human t cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (htlv-1). the prevalence rate of strongyloides stercoralis and htlv-1 infection were 6.3% and 14.0%, respectively. among 2,185 patients more than 50 years of age, the rate of s. stercoralis infection was significantly higher in patients with htlv-1 infection compared with patient ...200616474078
an inverse relationship between autoimmune liver diseases and strongyloides stercoralis infection.a case-control study was undertaken to describe the prevalence of strongyloides stercoralis infection among patients with autoimmune liver diseases, such as primary biliary cirrhosis (pbc), autoimmune hepatitis (aih), and primary sclerosing cholangitis (psc). this study covered 4,117 patients who were admitted to hospitals in okinawa, japan, between 1988 and 2006. during this period, 538 patients had the following chronic liver diseases: pbc, aih, psc, chronic viral hepatitis group, and alcoholi ...200717488925
association between strongyloides stercoralis infection and biliary tract cancer.infectious agents, including parasites, often have oncogenic potential. however, there has been no study on the association between strongyloides stercoralis infection and cancer risk. therefore, we investigated the relationship between s. stercoralis infection and the occurrence of hepato-pancreato-biliary cancer. this case-control study examined 1,654 patients aged>or=50 years in the department of medicine and therapeutics, ryukyu university hospital, okinawa, japan, between 1991 and 2005. the ...200717611780
prevalence of blastocystis hominis and strongyloides stercoralis infection in okinawa, japan.this study was conducted to clarify the prevalence of blastocystis hominis and strongyloides stercoralis infection in ryukyu university hospital, okinawa, japan, between january 2004 and november 2006. stool samples collected from 3,292 patients were examined by the direct smear method, formalin-ether sedimentation method, and agar plate culture method. the prevalence rate of b. hominis and s. stercoralis infection was 1.0 and 3.4%, respectively. the prevalence rate of b. hominis infection in pa ...200717717704
relationship among strongyloides stercoralis infection, human t-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 infection, and cancer: a 24-year cohort inpatient study in okinawa, japan.this study evaluated the prevalence of strongyloides stercoralis infection and human t-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (htlv-1) infection in the population. in addition, this study investigated the relationship between s. stercoralis infection or htlv-1 infection and a patient's risk of developing related cancers. this is a retrospective cohort study of 5,209 patients. the prevalence of s. stercoralis infection was 5.2% among all patients. the prevalence among men (6.3%) was significantly higher ...201626621566
