studies on bacteriology of cholera infection in varanasi. 19751213804
persistence of vibrio cholerae in inter epidemic period--preliminary observations on analysis of water.out of the 61 water samples collected from hand pumps and wells from cholera endemic areas of varanasi city, vibrio cholerae non 01 was detected in only one sample. however, seven (18.9 per cent) samples out of 37 samples of river water were positive for v. cholerae non 01. none of the samples showed vibrio cholerae. these observations indicate transmission and dilution of vibrio cholerae bacillus in environment.19911918868
enteropathogenic bacteria in river ganges in varanasi.a bacteriological study of the river ganges in varanasi was carried out from december 1985 to november 1987. in all 407 water samples were collected, 335 from bathing ghats and 72 from sewage openings and were examined for the presence of enteropathogenic bacteria. vibrio cholerae 0-1 (1.72%), non 0-1 vibrio cholera (3.69%), vibrio fluvialis (0.74%), aeromonas sp. (0.49%), plesiomonas sp. (0.25%), salmonella sp. (0.98%) and shigella sp. (1.23%) were isolated from both ghats and sewage openings a ...19938157311
attachment of non-culturable toxigenic vibrio cholerae o1 and non-o1 and aeromonas spp. to the aquatic arthropod gerris spinolae and plants in the river ganga, varanasi.non-cultivable, pathogenic o1 and non-o1 vibrio cholerae and aeromonas spp. were resuscitated from aquatic arthropods and plant homogenate respectively, by rabbit ileal loop (ril) assay. these organisms adhered to the aquatic arthropod gerris spinolae and various species of phytoplankton in the river ganga, but failed to grow after direct inoculation on artificial media except for only 10 homogenates of the arthropod. the number of non-o1 v. cholerae and aeromonas recovered on direct inoculation ...19958589660
molecular characterization of vibrio cholerae o139 bengal isolated from water and the aquatic plant eichhornia crassipes in the river ganga, varanasi, india.a collection of ten strains of vibrio cholerae o139, comprising six isolates from eichhornia crassipes, two from water of the river ganga, and one each from a well and a hand pump, were characterized. all the strains carried the ctx genetic element (ctxa, zot, and ace) except for the st gene and carried structural and regulatory genes for toxin-coregulated pilus (tcpa, tcpi, and toxr), adherence factor (ompu), and accessory colonization factor (acfb); all produced cholera toxin (ct). these strai ...200312676727
vibrio cholerae non-o1, non-o139 strains isolated before 1992 from varanasi, india are multiple drug resistant, contain intsxt, dfr18 and aada5 genes.in this study, we report the presence of the sxt element and class i integron in vibrio cholerae non-o1, non-o139 strains isolated from varanasi, india. isolates were resistant to cotrimoxazole, trimethoprim and/or streptomycin, furazolidone and ampicillin. none contained plasmids. polymerase chain reaction (pcr) and dna sequencing revealed the presence of antibiotic resistance gene cassettes, aada1, aada2, aada5 and dfra15, in the class i integron and sxt, an integrative conjugative element con ...200818201198
