the descriptive epidemiology of primary liver cancer in italy.using figures from the official death registry, we studied the descriptive epidemiology of primary liver cancer (plc) in italy from 1969 to 1985. the annual age-standardized mortality rate rose from 3.7/100,000 in 1969 to 4.7/100,000 in 1985, reaching the peak of 6.5/100,000 in 1983. the male/female ratio increased from 1.2:1 in 1969 to 2:1 in 1985. the age-specific mortality rate was very low in subjects under 55 years of age and peaked in subjects in their seventies and eighties. the rate was ...19911742544
hepatitis c virus infection in italian intravenous drug users: epidemiological and clinical aspects.the epidemological and clinical features of hepatitis c virus infection have been evaluated in a cohort of 227 intravenous drug users enrolled at a drug dependence treatment center in the veneto area in 1992-1993 and followed periodically. hepatitis c virus infection was detected using second-generation anti-hcv elisa in 171 (75%) subjects at enrollment. anti-hcv seropositivity correlated with: a) the duration of drug abuse: 91% of intravenous drug users injecting for more than 8 years were sero ...19958544644
hepatitis a, b, and c infection in a community of sub-saharan immigrants living in verona (italy).in italy, about 5% of the population is represented by immigrants. the epidemiology of hepatitis a virus (hav), hepatitis b virus (hbv), and hepatitis c virus (hcv) infection in africa is very different from europe; the present study aimed to assess the seroprevalence of viral hepatitis infections in sub-saharan african immigrants living in verona.200819006505
the bloodsucking arthropod bite as possible cofactor in the transmission of human herpesvirus-8 infection and in the expression of kaposi's sarcoma disease.based on a review of the literature on human herpesvirus-8 (hhv8) and kaposi's sarcoma (ks) and on the distribution of ks in italy (veneto region particularly), we hypothesize that the bite of bloodsucking arthropods is a cofactor in the seroconversion to hhv8 positivity and probably in the pathogenesis of ks. the bloodsucking arthropod releases with saliva powerful antihaemostatics and immunomodulators which may favour the replication and the establishment of the pathogen. transmission would de ...200212404820
occupational risk of blood-borne viruses in healthcare workers: a 5-year surveillance program.this study presents the results of a 5-year surveillance program involving the prospective follow-up of healthcare workers (hcws) in the veneto region of italy exposed to blood-borne viruses.200212083236
hepatitis c virus infection in homosexual men: a seroepidemiological study in gay clubs in north-east italy.seroprevalence of hepatitis c virus (hcv), hepatitis b virus (hbv) and hiv antibodies was studied in a group of 259 apparently healthy homosexual men of the veneto region (italy). subjects were recruited between 1987 and 1989 from homosexual men's clubs. seropositivity was evaluated in relation to main risk factors associated with the lifestyle and sexual behaviours of this population. serological evaluation revealed an overall prevalence of hcv infection of 18.9% in the study population as a wh ...19911723694
[prevalence of hepatitis virus a, b, and c markers according to the geographic origin of medical students].antibodies against viral hepatitis a, b and c were evaluated in 221 students of graduate courses of the medical school of padua university born in countries different from italy. data were compared with those measured in 362 students born in veneto region and 87 students born in centre-southern italy. the results showed a high, significant prevalence of positive antibodies against hepatitis a in students from africa (94.7%), asia (60.9%), centre-southern america (60.9%) and east europe (52.7%); ...200718409937
