helminth fauna of the red fox (vulpes vulpes linnaeus, 1758) in southern belarus.we examined 94 carcasses of and 1,213 faecal samples from red foxes collected between 1981 and 2001 in natural and transformed ecosystems in the southern part of belarus. a total of 32 helminth species were found. of these, the most common were alaria alata, pearsonema plica, taenia crassiceps, toxocara canis, trichinella spp. larvae and uncinaria stenocephala. all species are significant for medical and veterinary health.200312474048
[distomum musculorum suis, mesocercairia of alaria alata in the wild boar sus scrofa l]. 195313148935
[the studies of the invasion of alaria alata (goeze,1782) in the province of kuyavia and pomerania].the studies were conducted between 1999 and 2001 in two hunting regions. larval alariosis was revealed in the boars only in one of the studied regions. in this region, the results of the parasitological studies, conducted towards a. alata in the direct host (domestic dogs) and indirect hosts (snails: planorbis planorbis and anisus vortex as well as frogs: rana temporaria and rana terrestris) were also positive. the lack of the host snails a. alata in the other region might have resulted from no ...200116894758
biology of alaria spp. and human exposition risk to alaria mesocercariae-a review.recent incidental background findings of alaria alata mesocercariae ["distomum muscularis suis," duncker, 1896] in meat of wild boars during official trichinella inspection initiated a re-assessment of the potential human health risk as posed by this parasite. the present review of the literature on alaria biology shows that the human exposition risk should no longer be accepted to be negligible, as it demonstrates a general lack of knowledge in relevant areas of alaria biology confounding any r ...200919430816
a novel detection method for alaria alata mesocercariae in meat.distomum musculorum suis (dms), the mesocercarial stage of the trematode alaria alata, can cause severe damages within their hosts, and since several reports about cases of human larval alariosis have been published, it became apparent that infected game animals and in particular wild boars are a potential source of infection for both humans and animals. a final statement concerning the health risks for consumers could not be given due to the lack of information about both the prevalence of dms ...201020405145
development of a pcr approach for differentiation of alaria spp. mesocercariae.to date classification and differentiation of alaria spp. are based largely on external characteristics and comparative morphology of adult flukes. the accurate differentiation between various alaria spp. mesocercariae is indeed difficult because there are only few data on morphological and morphometrical features of the parasite's developmental stages. we established a conventional polymerase chain reaction (pcr) for a molecular-based diagnosis of alaria alata mesocercariae that can aid in thei ...201121210150
new data in france on the trematode alaria alata (goeze, 1792) obtained during trichinella inspections.the trematode alaria alata is a cosmopolite parasite found in red foxes (vulpes vulpes), the main definitive host in europe. in contrast only few data are reported in wild boars (sus scrofa), a paratenic host. the aim of this paper is to describe the importance and distribution of alaria alata mesocercariae in wild boars, information is given by findings of these larvae during trichinella mandatory meat inspection on wild boars' carcasses aimed for human consumption. more than a hundred cases of ...201121894269
wildlife reservoirs for vector-borne canine, feline and zoonotic infections in austria.austria's mammalian wildlife comprises a large variety of species, acting and interacting in different ways as reservoir and intermediate and definitive hosts for different pathogens that can be transmitted to pets and/or humans. foxes and other wild canids are responsible for maintaining zoonotic agents, e.g. echinococcus multilocularis, as well as pet-relevant pathogens, e.g. hepatozoon canis. together with the canids, and less commonly felids, rodents play a major role as intermediate and par ...201425830102
prevalence of alaria infection in companion animals in north central oklahoma from 2006 through 2015 and detection in wildlife.objective to determine the prevalence of alaria infection in cats and dogs in north central oklahoma over various periods and investigate whether wild animal species in this region were also infected. design combined cross-sectional study and case series. sample results of parasitological testing of fecal samples from 5,417 client-owned dogs and 1,246 client-owned cats (2006 through 2014); fecal samples from 837 shelter or rescue dogs and 331 shelter or rescue cats (2013 and 2014) and 268 feral ...201728358635
alaria alata mesocercariae among feral cats and badgers, denmark. 201526402302
prevalence and intensity of alaria alata (goeze, 1792) in water frogs and brown frogs in natural conditions.in the last 15 years, the mesocercariae of alaria alata have frequently been reported in the wild boar during routine trichinella inspections made compulsory for the trade of venison meat in europe. if these studies have focused primarily on mesocercariae isolated from meat, few works have been done so far to understand the circulation of the parasite in natural conditions especially in the intermediate hosts. this study focuses on the second intermediate hosts of this parasite assessing the sui ...201526319522
effect of temperature on the survival of alaria alata mesocercariae.recent findings of alaria alata mesocercariae in wild boars and other animals in europe reinforced the concern about the public health risk posed by this parasite especially if the game meat is insufficiently heated during preparation. cooking and freezing are effective methods for the inactivation of parasites in meat whereas refrigeration is considered as an essential part of the good hygiene practice. additionally, microwave dielectric heating may represent an equally effective tool for paras ...201525566772
effects of in vitro conditions on the survival of alaria alata mesocercariae.the aim of this study was to determine the effect of different concentrations of table salt (nacl) and ethanol (v/v) solutions on the viability of alaria alata mesocercariae. furthermore, the survival of a. alata mesocercariae during simulated human gastric digestion was evaluated. for this purpose, a. alata mesocercariae migration technique (amt) was used for the isolation of the parasite from high-positive a. alata mesocercariae meat from wild boar, raccoon, raccoon dog, and badger meat. in to ...201424880239
tenacity of alaria alata mesocercariae in homemade german meat products.a renewed interest in the pathogenic potential of alaria alata mesocercariae emerged over the last 10years as a result of increased findings of this parasite in feral pigs during official examination for trichinella spp. cases of food associated human alariosis in north america suggest that a risk associated with the consumption of traditional raw cured products from infected wild boar meat cannot be neglected because the commonly applied preservation techniques may not necessarily kill the meso ...201424553052
increasing circulation of alaria alata mesocercaria in wild boar populations of the rhine valley, france, 2007-2011.the presence of the mesocercarial stage of alaria alata (goeze, 1792) in wild boar meat represents a potential risk for human, but little is known about the circulation of mesocercaria in wild boar populations. routine trichinella inspection, mandatorily performed in wild boar in france, also allowed detecting mesocercaria. we analyzed the results of this detection in the carcasses of 27,582 wild boars hunted in 2007-2011, in 502 hunting areas of the rhine valley. prevalence was globally low (0. ...201424262388
alaria alata mesocercariae in raccoons (procyon lotor) in germany.alaria alata is a trematode of carnivores from europe. the mesocercarial stage was recently identified in wild boar meat from europe. previous histopathologic studies showed the presence of unidentified parasitic cysts within the tongues of raccoons from northern germany. for identification of the parasite species, tissue samples of 105 raccoons originating from a national park in northern germany and from berlin metropolitan area were collected. histological examination of cryotome sections of ...201323892481
alaria alata mesocercariae in wild boar (sus scrofa, linnaeus, 1758) in south regions of the czech republic.from march 2012 to february 2013, 221 wild boar carcasses obtained from regular hunts in the czech republic were tested for alaria alata mesocercariae using the alaria-migration-technique. most samples originated from south moravia (173), and all 15 positive samples were found in this region, in particular in tvrdonice (3/10) and lanžhot (12/28), close to the site of the first description of this parasitic stage in wild boars in the territory of former čssr. these hunting grounds are located bet ...201323806746
first detection of alaria alata mesocercariae in wild boars (sus scrofa linnaeus, 1758) from bulgaria.the trematode alaria alata, an intestinal parasite of different carnivore species is widely distributed throughout europe. the mesocercarial stages of alaria spp. may infect almost all vertebrate species, including humans, and, in particular, omnivorous scavengers such as wild boars serve as paratenic hosts for the parasite. the introduction of the a. alata mesocercariae migration technique (amt) opened the way to a reliable detection of alaria spp. mesocercariae in different body tissues of the ...201423374251
alaria alata in wild boars (sus scrofa, linnaeus, 1758) in the eastern parts of germany.over the last decade, incidental findings of alaria alata in stocks of german wild boar during the official trichinella inspection have been increased. as early as 2006, the german federal institute for risk assessment pointed out the possible health risk to the consumer posed by this trematode. however, at that time, reliable data concerning the prevalence of the parasite in german wild boars and feral pigs were lacking especially because no appropriate detection method was available. the devel ...201222562214
the prevalence and distribution of alaria alata, a potential zoonotic parasite, in foxes in ireland.the digenean trematode alaria alata, an intestinal parasite of wild canids is widely distributed in europe. the recent finding of the mesocercarial life cycle stage in the paratenic wild boar host suggests that it may potentially infect humans mohl et al. (parasitol res 105:1-15, 2009). over 500 foxes were examined during a wildlife survey for zoonotic diseases in 2009 and 2010. the prevalence of a. alata ranged from 21% to 26% in 2009 and 2010, and the intensity of infection varied, with the ma ...201222350672
