resistance of mice to infection with the human strain of hymenolepis nana.six attempts were made to infect mice by feeding them eggs of the human strain of hymenolepis nana, but none was successful. no eggs were found in the mouse faeces 14 days after feeding, and no adult worms were recovered at post mortem examination. in attempts to induce cysticercoids to infect mice, beetles were either fed on infected human faeces or given hymenolepis eggs on filter paper. both methods were unsuccessful, as no cysticercoids were recovered six days after exposure of the beetles.19892604465
[investigation on zoonoses among veterinary technicians].we conducted a survey on how much veterinary clinics staff, mostly veterinary technicians, know about zoonosis and how extensively they inform pet owners of ways to prevent zoonosis. the number of people who took part in the survey was 1,057. the ratio of people who said their knowledge on zoonosis is "neither sufficient nor insufficient" was 53.8%, which is larger than the ratio of people who replied "sufficient" or "insufficient." the percentage of those who said their way of giving informatio ...200312806928

intestinal parasitoses among wayampi indians from french guiana.intestinal parasitism and its epidemiological characteristics were studied in an isolated amerindian population from upper oyapock (french guiana) that has retained its traditional social and cultural specificities. this population consisted of 138 wayampi indians, 68 adults and 70 children (below the age of 15 years), with a sex ratio (m/f) of 0.86, spread over the four villages of the community of trois sauts, corresponding to more than two thirds of the population recorded as inhabiting the s ...200212116863
a molecular phylogeny of nuclear and mitochondrial sequences in hymenolepis nana (cestoda) supports the existence of a cryptic species.since isolates of hymenolepis nana infecting humans and rodents are morphologically indistinguishable, the only way they can be reliably identified is by comparing the parasite in each host using molecular tools. in the current study, isolates of h. nana from rodent and human hosts from a broad geographical range were sequenced at the ribosomal first internal transcribed spacer (its1), the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (c01) gene and the nuclear paramyosin gene loci. twenty-three ...200212553576
intestinal infections in humans in the rocky mountain region, united states.to evaluate the seasonal prevalence of human intestinal parasites in the western states of colorado, utah, new mexico, and montana, fecal samples were examined as part of routine diagnostic testing from patients experiencing gastrointestinal discomfort in august (summer) 2006, january (winter), and april (spring) 2007. parasite identification in positive samples was confirmed using light microscopy after wet mount and trichrome staining techniques. seventy-eight of the 1,083 patients surveyed (7 ...201019807196
pentastomiasis and other parasitic zoonoses from reptiles and amphibians.reptiles are growing in popularity as pets.the colonization of reptiles and amphibians by parasites and the resulting disease conditions are the most common problems seen in captive animals.this review focuses on pentastomiasis and sparganosis, important parasitic zoonoses of reptiles and amphibians, respectively, and free living-amoebae. humans are suitable accidental hosts for some pentastomid species (particularly armillifer and porocephalus). in geographical areas with special ethnics, such ...201122191176
detection of the rodent tapeworm rodentolepis (=hymenolepis) microstoma in humans. a new zoonosis?a longitudinal survey of gastro-intestinal parasites was conducted over a 3-year period in remote communities in the north-west of western australia where, based on diagnosis by microscopy of faecal samples, rodentolepis (=hymenolepis) nana was found to be the most common enteric parasite. in the present study, using molecular tools, we describe the unexpected discovery, of a mixed infection with a second hymenolepidid species, rodentolepis (=hymenolepis) microstoma in four of the surveyed indiv ...200313129530
rapid appraisal of human intestinal helminth infections among schoolchildren in osh oblast, kyrgyzstan.a population-representative lot quality assurance sampling (lqas) survey was conducted in 2009 to determine the prevalence of intestinal helminth infections among schoolchildren across osh oblast, kyrgyzstan. the diagnostic approach consisted of duplicate kato-katz thick smears from a single stool sample and an adhesive tape test. a questionnaire was administered to identify risk factors for infections. a total of 1262 schoolchildren aged 6-15 years were recruited; 41% of them harboured at least ...201020615381
angiostrongyliasis: analysis of antigens of angiostrongylus costaricensis adult worms versus igg from infected patients with angiostrongylus cantonensis.the possibility of cross-reactivity was previously investigated by indirect elisa with sera from angiostrongylus cantonensis infections, normal controls and a. costaricensis antigen. 5 microg/ml of crude antigen from both sexes of each species reacted with diluted serum samples (1:800) of each of 20 cases of angiostrongyliasis and normal controls, and further with anti-human igg conjugate at 1:1,000. the mean absorbance values were evaluated as follows; normal controls showed a value of 0.033 us ...200011414459
studies in potential filaricides. 18. synthesis of 2,2'-disubstituted 5,5'-dibenzimidazolyl ketones and related compounds as potential anthelmintics.a series of 2,2'-disubstituted 5,5'-dibenzimidazolyl ketones and related compounds have been synthesized of which 2,2'-bis(carbomethoxyamino)-5,5'-dibenzimidazolyl ketone exhibited a broad spectrum of anthelmintic activity in experimental animals. at doses of 10-50 mg/kg given intraperitoneally, 5 killed 100% of the adult worms of litomosoides carinii, dipetalonema viteae, and brugia malayi. by the oral route the macrofilaricidal efficacy of 5 was 97-100% at 100-200 mg/kg x 5 days. the treated a ...19863543360
