evolution of a unique seed maturity pattern in croton bonplandianum baill strengthens ant-plant mutualism for seed dispersal.the female flowers of croton bonplandianum bear nectar glands which become active during fruit maturation and attain peak activity just prior to the splitting of fruits. this temporal specificity of nectar gland activity is shown to facilitate seed dispersal by ants, which are attracted to the plant only during the fruit maturation period. the nectar glands establish a "nectar influence zone" with a radius of 60 cm around the plant within which seed dispersal by ants is effective. seed dispersal ...198828312325
monitoring and assessment of mercury pollution in the vicinity of a chloralkali plant. iv. bioconcentration of mercury in in situ aquatic and terrestrial plants at ganjam, india.in situ aquatic and terrestrial plants including a few vegetable and crop plants growing in and around a chloralkali plant at ganjam, india were analyzed for concentrations of root and shoot mercury. the aquatic plants found to bioconcentrate mercury to different degrees included marsilea spp., spirodela polyrhiza, jussiea repens, paspalum scrobiculatam, pistia stratiotes, eichhornia crassipes, hygrophila schulli, monochoria hastata and bacopa monniera. among wild terrestrial plants chloris barb ...19921536599
effect of railway engines emission on the micromorphology of some field plants.plant species as indicator is the most common method used to indicate the effects of pollution on plants. however, the present study explores the usage of micromorphological parameters of the plant species as the indicators. the plants selected for the present studies included croton bonplandianum, cannabis sativa and calotropis procera. the parameters examined were (1) abnormalities of stomata, (2) number of stomata per unit area, (3) number of epidermal cells per unit area, (4) stomatal index. ...200617436526
pcr-based detection and partial genome sequencing indicate high genetic diversity in bangladeshi begomoviruses and their whitefly vector, bemisia tabaci.the population diversity of bangladeshi begomoviruses and their vector, bemisia tabaci was analysed by pcr-based detection and partial genome sequencing. b. tabaci adults and plants expressing symptoms of virus infection were collected from locations representing diverse agro-ecological regions of the country. universal and species-specific primers were used to detect begomoviruses in seven crops (chilli, okra, papaya, pumpkin, sponge gourd, tomato and yardlong bean) and two common weeds (agerat ...200716927121
effects of an aqueous extract of croton bonplandianum baill in rats.we have investigated the cytotoxic and biochemical effects of injecting aqueous phytoextract of croton bonplandianum (baill) leaves in male rats. subchronic dosages of 3.25, 4.65 and 6.97mgphytoextractg(-1)b.wt.week(-1) were administered to rats. to test ameliorative effects, rats were injected with phytoextract mixed with 0.2mgg(-1)b.wt. of cyclophosphamide. positive controls received only cyclophosphamide, while negative control groups were kept on normal diet and water. our results demonstrat ...200821791385
complete nucleotide sequence of a begomovirus and associated betasatellite infecting croton (croton bonplandianus) in pakistan.the complete sequences of a begomovirus and an associated betasatellite isolated from croton bonplandianus originating from pakistan were determined. the sequence of the begomovirus showed the highest level of nucleotide sequence identity (88.9%) to an isolate of papaya leaf curl virus and thus represents a new species, for which we propose the name croton yellow vein virus (cyvv). the sequence of the betasatellite showed the highest levels of sequence identity (82 to 98.4%) to six sequences in ...201121487662
complete nucleotide sequence of croton yellow vein mosaic virus and dna-β associated with yellow vein mosaic disease of jatropha gossypifolia in india.a severe yellow vein mosaic disease was noticed on several jatropha gossypifolia plants growing nearby agriculture fields at lucknow, india. diseased plants exhibited yellow vein mosaic, leaf deformation, vein swelling and stunting. a population of whiteflies (bemisia tabaci) was also noticed in the vicinities; therefore, begomovirus infection was suspected. to confirm begomovirus association, total dna was isolated from symptomatic leaf samples and subjected to pcr using dna-a, dna-b and dna-β- ...201121479677
evaluation of larvicidal activity of medicinal plant extracts against three mosquito vectors.to evaluate the mosquito larvicidal activity of plant extracts.201121771411
host range and genetic diversity of croton yellow vein mosaic virus, a weed-infecting monopartite begomovirus causing leaf curl disease in tomato.croton yellow vein mosaic virus (cyvmv) is a widely occurring begomovirus in croton bonplandianum, a common weed in the indian subcontinent. in this study, cyvmv (genus begomovirus, family geminiviridae) was transmitted by whiteflies (bemisia tabaci) to as many as 35 plant species belonging to 11 families, including many vegetables, tobacco varieties, ornamentals and weeds. cyvmv produced bright yellow vein symptoms in croton, whereas in all the other host species, the virus produced leaf curl s ...201323096697
chemical composition of the essential oil of croton bonplandianus from india.the essential oil obtained from the aerial parts of croton bonplandianus baill. was analyzed by gas chromatography (gc) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (gc/ms). a total of 37 compounds have been identified, representing 96.2% of the total oil. the main constituents were identified as beta-caryophyllene (16.7%), germacrene d (14.7%), borneol (8.3%), z-beta-damascenone (6.(%), isobornyl acetate (6.2%), alpha-humulene (6.1%), germacrene a (5.2%) and caryophyllene oxide (4.5%). the oil was ...201424689307
cytotoxic and pro-apoptotic activities of leaf extract of croton bonplandianus baill. against lung cancer cell line a549.the acetone extract (ace) of the croton bonplandianus baill., an exotic weed of the euphorbiaceae family was studied for cytotoxicity, apoptosis, cell cycle arrest in a549 cell line and antioxidant capacities using mtt assay, acridine orange/ethidium bromide (ao/eb staining), cell cycle analysis and dpph radical scavenging assay respectively. based on the cytotoxic activity, the extract was tested for the apoptotic effect using ao/eb and hoechst 33258 staining. the apoptosis was characterized by ...201627468464
photo-mediated optimized synthesis of silver nanoparticles for the selective detection of iron(iii), antibacterial and antioxidant activity.the agnps synthesized by green method have shown great potential in several applications such as biosensing, biomedical, catalysis, electronic etc. the present study deals with the selective colorimetric detection of fe(3+) using photoinduced green synthesized agnps. for the synthesis purpose, an aqueous extract of croton bonplandianum (aec) was used as a reducing and stabilizing agent. the biosynthesis was confirmed by uv-visible spectroscopy where an spr band at λmax 436nm after 40s and 428nm ...201727987654
phytoextraction of heavy metals by potential native plants and their microscopic observation of root growing on stabilised distillery sludge as a prospective tool for in situ phytoremediation of industrial waste.the safe disposal of post-methanated distillery sludge (pmds) in the environment is challenging due to high concentrations of heavy metals along with other complex organic pollutants. the study has revealed that pmds contained high amounts of fe (2403), zn (210), mn (126), cu (73.62), cr (21.825), pb (16.33) and ni (13.425 mg kg(-1)) along with melanoidins and other co-pollutants. the phytoextraction pattern in 15 potential native plants growing on sludge showed that the blumea lacera, partheniu ...201727826829
