parasites of south african wildlife. ix. helminths of kudu, tragelaphus strepsiceros, in the eastern cape province.the helminths of 25 kudu, tragelaphus strepsiceros, from 3 localities in the eastern cape province were collected, counted and identified. the majority of kudu harboured no worms, and the burdens of those infected were small. a race of cooperia rotundispiculum, a dictyocaulus sp., a haemonchus sp., nematodirus helvetianus and ostertagia ostertagi were recovered. two parasites, nematodirus helvetianus and ostertagia ostertagi can be added to the list of helminth parasites of kudu in south africa.19911923383
survey of free-ranging elk from wyoming and montana for selected pathogens.from december 1991 through january 1995, a disease survey was conducted on herds of free-ranging, hunter-killed elk (cervus elaphus nelsoni) from three areas in proximity to yellowstone national park (ynp), wyoming (usa), after tuberculosis caused by mycobacterium bovis was discovered in a captive herd of elk in the area. complete or partial sets of specimens from 289 elk collected between december 1991 and january 1993 were examined histologically; no mycobacterial lesions were observed. lesion ...19979131561
helminths and bot fly larvae of wild ungulates on a game ranch in central province, zambia.helminths and bot fly larvae were collected from 11 wild ungulate species on a game ranch in the central province of zambia. new host-parasite records are: calicophoron sp. from defassa waterbuck kobus ellipsiprymnus defassa and kafue lechwe kobus leche kafuensis; avitellina centripunctata, gaigeria pachyscelis and gedoelstia cristata from tsessebe damaliscus lunatus lunatus; cooperia rotundispiculum from common reedbuck redunca arundinum; dictyocaulus filaria from greater kudu tragelaphus strep ...19989741058
a model for study of lungworm (dictyocaulus sp.) and gastrointestinal nematode infection in young red deer (cervus elaphus).a model of sub-clinical parasitism in young red deer, using concurrent trickle infections of lungworm (dictyocaulus sp.) and mixed gastro-intestinal (gi) nematodes of deer-origin was evaluated. 20 parasite-free deer calves were artificially reared indoors from 4 days of age. a further five calves were naturally reared on pasture with their dams, treated with anthelmintic and brought indoors at 3-4 months. at 4-4.5 months of age they were individually housed and allocated to five groups (n=5). gr ...200010714458
effect of forage legumes containing condensed tannins on lungworm (dictyocaulus sp.) and gastrointestinal parasitism in young red deer (cervus elaphus).to investigate the effect of feeding forage legumes containing condensed tannins (ct) on internal parasitism, red deer calves were fed either lucerne (medicago sativa; 0.1 per cent ct), birdsfoot trefoil (lotus corniculatus; 1.9 per cent ct) or sulla (hedysarum coronarium; 3.5 per cent ct) and trickle-infected with deer-origin gastrointestinal nematode and lungworm (dictyocaulus sp.) larvae for 5 weeks, then slaughtered at 7 weeks. there was a significant negative linear relationship between die ...200010877967
differentiation of dorsal-spined elaphostrongyline larvae by polymerase chain reaction amplification of its-2 of rdna.molecular genetics was used to devise the first reliable diagnostic tool for differentiating morphologically indistinguishable dorsal-spined, first-stage larvae (l1's) and other stages of the nematode protostrongylid subfamily elaphostrongylinae. a polymerase chain reaction (pcr) assay employing specifically designed primers was developed to selectively amplify dna of the its-2 region of the ribosomal gene. amplification of the entire its-2 region differentiated between larvae of the genera elap ...200011085433
molecular identification and prevalence of dictyocaulus spp. (trichostrongyloidea: dictyocaulidae) in swedish semi-domestic and free-living cervids.lungs of 102 roe deer (capreolus capreolus), 136 moose (alces alces), 68 fallow deer (dama dama), and six red deer (cervus elaphus) were examined during hunting seasons from 16 september 1997 to 1 march 2000. the aim was to determine the species composition and prevalence of dictyocaulus lungworms in these hosts in sweden. worms were identified following polymerase chain reaction (pcr) amplification of the internal transcribed spacer of ribosomal dna (its2), followed by hybridization with four s ...200212528445
efficacy trial of an irradiated cattle lungworm vaccine in red deer (cervus elaphus).lungworm (dictyocaulus sp.) is the parasite of most concern to the new zealand deer industry. although lungworm can be controlled by anthelmintics there is an increasing concern over excessive drenching programmes and reliance on chemicals for parasite control. a live irradiated larval vaccine developed for cattle has been available in europe for the past 40 years but has never been evaluated in red deer in new zealand. four groups of red deer and two of cattle were hand reared from birth in par ...200314597286
[results of parasitological examinations of faecal samples from horses, ruminants, pigs, dogs, cats, hedgehogs and rabbits between 1998 and 2002].the results of coproscopical examinations in horses, ruminants, pigs, dogs, cats, hedgehogs and rabbits between 1998 and 2002 are presented. in 4399 samples from horses 37.4% stages of strongylids, 1.4% anoplocephalids, 1.3% strongyloides westeri, 0.9% parascaris equorum, 0.04% oxyuris equi, 0.04% eimeria sp. and 0.04% fasciola hepatica were found. in 998 samples of cattle 22.1% stages of strongylids, 11.2% of eimeria spp., 3.5% of cryptosporidium, 2.9% of moniezia spp., 1.3% of trichuris spp., ...200415287577
[occurrence of nematodes in horses from the northern region, state of tocantins, brazil].the occurrence of nematodes in horses of northern region, state of tocantins was studied. fecal samples were collected from 70 horses and 31 donkeys, in a total of 101 animals of different ages, in the municipalities of nova olinda, araguanã, babaçulândia and santa tereza. fecal examination was carried out for counting of eggs per gram of faeces, identification and quantification of larvae, diagnosis of habronemosis and lungworms. significant occurrence of large and small strongyles and dictyoca ...200820059843
characterization of dictyocaulus species (nematoda: trichostrongyloidea) from three species of wild ruminants in northwestern spain.specimens of dictyocaulus spp. were extracted from the respiratory tracts of 3 ruminant hosts including roe deer (capreolus capreolus), red deer (cervus elaphus), and chamois (rupicapra rupicapra) from wild populations in the province of le6n, northwestern spain. the near-complete nuclear small-subunit ribosomal rna gene, and 2 regions of the large-subunit ribosomal rna gene, were amplified by pcr and sequenced. the ssu rdna gene sequences indicated a high level of similarity between the isolate ...200920050000
