endoscopic stent configuration and bile flow rates in a variable diameter bile duct model.endoscopically placed biliary stents are used in the treatment of biliary strictures and obstruction. patency of the stent is related to bile flow rate through the stent. the purpose of this study was to examine the influence of stent diameter, configuration, and common duct diameter on bile flow rates. flow rates were examined in straight and pigtail stents, 7 fr and 10 fr, and in a 1 cm and 2.3 cm diameter cbd model. bile-flow rates were greater in the straight and 10 fr stents. bile-duct diam ...20072374987
a review on methods of phospholipase a determination.a short review is presented on methods to determine phospholipase a activities. on purpose, only those methods are covered which can, at least potentially, be used for assaying the low activities generally associated with intracellular phospholipases a. a selection was made of procedures which apply non-radioactive or radioactive substrates or chemically modified substrate analogs which can be used for spectrophotometric assays.199542289
[hemorrhage through the pancreatic duct -- endoscopic-radiological diagnosis (author's transl)].hemobilia and pancreatic hemorrhage must be considered in the differential diagnosis of bleeding fromthe papilla vateri. retrograde pancreaticography and angiography are the essentials of the further diagnostic workup. both methods together can reveal the origin and localization of the bleeding.1994159232
measures of social support: assessment of validity.the evidence of construct validity that resulted from conjoint testing of two measures of social support, the personal resource questionnaire (prq85) and the cost and reciprocity index (cri) is presented. both instruments were used with two samples of adults, 333 who were part of a large health project and 99 who participated in a methodological study. the prq85 and cri appear to tap the construct of support yet are not highly redundant. both tools demonstrated similar curves of relationships to ...20082367200
comparison of real and placebo acupuncture in histamine-induced asthma. a double-blind crossover study.a double-blind crossover study of the effects of real and placebo acupuncture on bronchial reactivity to histamine was carried out on 16 patients with moderately severe asthma. treatment with real or placebo acupuncture failed to modulate the bronchial hyperreactivity to histamine. these results suggest that a single treatment with acupuncture is unlikely to provide improvement in the management of acute bronchial asthma.20092736966
reproducibility of treadmill exercise data in patients with atrial fibrillation.serial submaximal treadmill tests are often used to evaluate the efficacy of therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation. since the response to serial tests can be influenced by a 'learning phenomenon', we performed maximal exercise tests on 9 patients (mean age 63 +/- 4 years) with chronic atrial fibrillation. points of analysis for the initial and follow-up treadmill exercise tests were 3 mph/0% grade, the gas exchange anaerobic threshold, and maximal exertion. significant (p less than 0.05) ...20092776144
further investigations on the significance of a plasma coagulation-accelerating factor in glomerular disease.the prevalence of the coagulation acceleration factor (caf) in patients with renal disease (predominantly glomerulonephritis) has been investigated. the relationship between the activated partial thromboplastin time, f.viii:c/vwf, prekallikrein, plasminogen and the pathogenesis of glomerulonephritis was also investigated. one hundred and seventeen patients were entered into the study on the basis of admission for renal biopsy. thirteen percent of the patients showed evidence for caf and 15% of p ...20123497077
evaluation of the circumoval precipitin test using dried blood on filter paper as a diagnostic tool in epidemiological survey for schistosomiasis.the suitability of the circumoval precipitin (cop) test in a field survey for schistosomiasis in the rural area using dried blood samples on filter paper was evaluated with reference to the stool examination by the merthiolate-iodine-formaldehyde concentration (mifc) technique. both blood and stool samples were collected simultaneously among over 600 inhabitants of two schistosomiasis endemic communities (barrios) of palo, leyte, philippines. the method of collecting blood samples on filter pape ...20031223333

modeling urea kinetics with two vs. three bun measurements. a critical comparison.hemodialysis urea modeling usually requires three bun measurements, c1, c2, and c3 (3-bun), to determine urea generation rate (g) and volume of urea distribution (v) from dvc/dt = f(c, v, g). we eliminated the requirement for c3 by modifying the algorithm to generate a periodic solution to the equations describing c1 and c2 (2-bun). during 156 consecutive dialyses in 37 patients there were no differences in v or g by the two methods: v = 38.3 +/- 1.3 l, g = 6.35 +/- 0.22 mg/min (2-bun); v = 37.9 ...20062597517

proximal femoral surface strain gauge analysis of a new epiphyseal prosthesis.this paper describes a new type of proximal femoral, replacement arthroplasty and its preliminary, pre-clinical, evaluation. the prosthesis was designed as a replacement for the femoral capital epiphysis. it comprises a thin, metal, articular shell and an underlying 'epiphyseal' replacement which is modulus-matched to adjacent proximal femoral bone. surface strain gauge analysis of the proximal femur under conditions simulating static single leg stance demonstrated that the new prosthesis mainta ...20092704212

[the dorsal root entry zone of the spinal cord: the surgical target in the treatment of pain and spasticity].the large amount of experimental works performed in the 60s and 70s, demonstrating the important role of drez in the modulation of the segmental mechanisms of pain and spasticity, drew the author's attention to this site as a possible target for surgery. the anatomical rationale, techniques and results of the procedure, named microsurgical -drez-tomy, are developed.20092633855

localized amyloidosis of the ureter.an unusual case of localized amyloidosis of the ureter is described. suspicion of the condition was first raised during operation when a frozen section was examined. an unnecessary nephrectomy was thus spared. it is a rare condition and awareness of the entity is required to recognise it clinically, radiologically or pathologically. the pathogenesis of localized amyloidosis is briefly discussed.20133588031
