The role of aggregation in Fusobacterium nucleatum- induced immune cell death.Fusobacterium nucleatum, an anaerobic oral bacterium, has been shown to be highly abundant in endodontic infections. Its role in these infections remains unclear. Previous studies have shown that F. nucleatum could aggregate immune cells. We have demonstrated that F. nucleatum can induce significant apoptosis in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). In this in vitro study, we sought to determine what role this aggregation phenomenon has on the induction of apoptosis in PBMCs.201122000457
Levels of periodontal pathogens in neonatal gastric aspirates and possible maternal sites of origin.Maternal periodontal infection has been recognized as a risk factor for preterm and low birthweight infants. It is suspected that pathogens causing periodontal disease may translocate to the amniotic cavity and so contribute to triggering an adverse pregnancy outcome. This study aimed to determine levels and proportions of periodontal bacteria in neonatal gastric aspirates obtained from complicated pregnancies and the respective maternal oral and vaginal samples using a quantitative polymerase c ...201121896155

[essential arterial hypertension in patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus during and after balneotherapy followed-up for 6 years].the statistical correlations between body weight, glycemia, total lipids, cholesterol in 200 patients with essential hypertension, especially borderline essential hypertension, followed up for 6 years indicate that the complex environmental factors in slănic-moldova health resort associated with balneotherapy may induce a return to normal values of the above mentioned parameters. good results were also obtained in the patients with essential hypertension and non-insulin dependent diabetes mellit ...20092636767

myeloid and erythroid progenitor cells from normal bone marrow adhere to collagen type i.one of the mechanisms by which normal hematopoietic progenitor cells remain localized within the bone marrow microenvironment is likely to involve adhesion of these cells to extracellular matrix (ecm) proteins. for example, there is evidence that uncommitted, hla-dr-negative progenitor cells and committed erythroid precursors (bfu-e) bind to fibronectin. however, fibronectin is not known to mediate binding of committed myeloid (granulocyte-macrophage) progenitors, raising the possibility that ot ...20041370640
[measurement of orthodontic appliance force using prototype sensors].in introductory remarks the most important biomechanical principles, which are relevant for the research, and conditions which must be satisfied presented in intraoral measuring of orthodontic forces were pointed out. first the aim of the research was defined, and then the investigation of mechanical properties of acrylics as a material for orthodontic appliances were carried out. the type of strain gauges, bonds and measuring system configurations, as well as measuring amplifiers and recording ...20082635572

the conus with no great artery.in three patients with complex cyanotic congenital heart disease, the conus was found to have no arterial outlet. the semilunar valves were at similar, caudad levels, and there was malposition of the great arteries. the aorta was related to the body--not the outflow portion--of the right ventricle in two patients with transposition and to the body of the left ventricle in one child with single ventricle. these cases confirm the independent embryological segregation of the conus and the truncus. ...20113207481

cancer, stress and personality: a correlational investigation of life-events, repression-sensitization and locus of control.this study investigated the hypothesis that stress-inducing life experiences and the personality factors of external locus of control and tendency to repress emotion are relevant in the aetiology of cancer. fifty cancer patients scored higher than 50 matched controls on a life-events scale (especially negative events), but were found to be lower on repression of emotion. there was no difference between groups on locus of control.20123401426

the effects of dihydrotachysterol therapy on the measurement of plasma 1,25-(oh)2-vitamin d in humans.anephric patients have undetectable plasma concentrations of 1,25-(oh)2-d, but when anephric patients are treated with dht2 (hytakerol), their plasma contains a substance that is co-purified with and displaces authentic 3h-1,25(oh)2-d3 from its intestinal cytoplasmic receptor. the concentration of this substance in the plasma of anephric patients taking dht2 is proportional to the administered daily dose of dht2 per kilogram body weight. when dht2 therapy is discontinued, the substance disappear ...2004438604
rating of the lesions in senile dementia of the alzheimer type: concordance between laboratories. a european multicenter study under the auspices of eurage.the study reported was intended to compare the impressions and analyses of investigators from 11 different laboratories on 2 slides, each from 6 cases with varying quantities of neuropathological change of the type found in alzheimer's disease and normal ageing. the material came from 6 selected female patients over 75 years of age all of whom had been examined in detail and assessed by the blessed test score. two were severely demented, 2 mildly demented and 2 were considered to be normal. unst ...20061698217

two cytochrome p-450 isoforms catalysing o-de-ethylation of ethoxycoumarin and ethoxyresorufin in higher plants.the o-dealkylating activities of 7-ethoxycoumarin o-de-ethylase (ecod) and 7-ethoxyresorufin o-de-ethylase (erod) have been fluorimetrically detected in microsomes prepared from manganese-induced jerusalem artichoke tubers. cytochrome p-450 dependence of the reactions was demonstrated by light-reversed co inhibition, nadph-dependence, nadh-nadph synergism and by use of specific inhibitors: antibodies to nadph-cytochrome p-450 reductase, mechanism-based inactivators and tetcyclasis. apparent km v ...20082241905
effects of early maturation on fetal growth.while the association of young maternal age with low birthweight (lbw) is well known, the contribution of early menarche to this association has never been studied. we examined the effects of early menarche (less than or equal to 11 years) on lbw and its two major underlying causes: pre-term delivery and smallness-for-gestational-age (sga). results represent a narrow chronological age range, 17-18 years, of a larger geographically based cohort of 2789 pregnant adolescents. adjusted odds ratios ( ...20092782851

serum levels of bilirubin and biliverdin in the sea lamprey, petromyzon marinus l., before and after their biliary atresia.1. the sera of ammocoetes, juvenile adults, and upstream migrants of the sea lamprey, petromyzon marinus l., were analyzed for the presence of the bile pigments, biliverdin and bilirubin. 2. bile pigment was not detected in the sera of ammocoetes. 3. after biliary atresia (degeneration of bile ducts at metamorphosis), bilirubin and biliverdin were detected in the sera of both juvenile adults and upstream migrants. 4. these data suggest that lampreys have some bile stasis following biliary atresi ...20102887360
effects of momorcharins on ovarian response to gonadotropin-induced superovulation in mice.alpha- and beta-momorcharins, which are abortifacient proteins isolated from momordica charantia seeds, were tested for a possible effect on ovulation and plasma levels of ovarian steroids in mice induced to superovulate by pmsg and hcg. the plant proteins did not affect follicular recruitment and maturation as evidenced by ovarian histology and serum 17 beta-estradiol level. both proteins diminished the number of oocytes ovulated when given on the day prior to or on the day of pmsg treatment, b ...20102898450
