plasma membrane association of three classes of bacterial toxins is mediated by a basic-hydrophobic motif.plasma membrane targeting is essential for the proper function of many bacterial toxins. a conserved fourhelical bundle membrane localization domain (4hbm) was recently identified within three diverse families of toxins: clostridial glucosylating toxins, martx toxins and pasteurella multocida-like toxins. when expressed in tissue culture cells or in yeast, gfp fusions to at least one 4hbm from each toxin family show significant peripheral membrane localization but with differing profiles. both i ...201122044757
pathogenicity of pasteurella pneumotropica in immunodeficient nod/shijic-scid/jcl and immunocompetent crlj:cd1 (icr) mice.pasteurella pneumotropica is an opportunistic pathogen in rodents. natural infection in immunodeficient animals suggests that immunodeficiency is a major factor in p. pneumotropica pathogenesis. to understand this process, we performed clinical, pathological and bacteriological studies of immunodeficient nod/shijic-scid/jcl and immunocompetent crlj:cd1 (icr) mice experimentally infected with p. pneumotropica atcc 35149. from 14 days postinoculation, some of p. pneumotropica-infected nod/shijic-s ...201122041283
microbial ecology of swine farms and prrs vaccine vaccination strategies.the present study investigated the microbial ecology and vaccination strategies against porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (prrs) in field condition. four representative farms with a history of prrs were included in this study. over the almost 3-year period, the average detection rate was 68.9%, making prrsv the first most frequently detected virus, followed by porcine circovirus type 2 (pcv2) (64.2%), pseudorabies virus (prv) (11.03%) and classical swine fever virus (csfv) (4.41%). s ...201122014373
Phenotypic Characterization and Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) Analysis of Pasteurella multocida Isolated from Korean Pigs.Pasteurella multocida causes various respiratory disease symptoms in pigs, including atrophic rhinitis and pneumonia. In the present study, 69 strains of P. multocida were isolated from 443 pigs with respiratory clinical symptoms at 182 farms located throughout South Korea from 2009 to 2010. A multiplex capsular PCR typing assay revealed that 69 strains of P. multocida isolated in this study had the biosynthetic locus of the capsules of either serogroup A (47 strains, 68.1%) or serogroup D (22 s ...201122167105
Balanoposthitis, dyspareunia, and treponema in the critically endangered Gilbert's potoroo (Potorous gilbertii). The Gilbert's potoroo (Potorous gilbertii) is one of Australia's most critically endangered mammals with a current estimated population of 70 individuals. Both the wild and captive populations have a long history of balanoposthitis with associated crusting, ulceration, and preputial discharge. We sought to identify the microbial species found in the discharge, determine their significance in causing balanoposthitis, and correlate these findings with reproductive success and survivorship. Bacteri ...201122102677
life-threatening respiratory pasteurellosis associated with palliative pet care.pasteurella multocida is a zoonotic gram-negative cocco-bacillus often associated with soft tissue infections due to dog and cat bites. here we report 3 patients who developed life-threatening p. multocida respiratory tract infections after providing palliative care to their dying pets.201222238163
ICEPmu1, an integrative conjugative element (ICE) of Pasteurella multocida: structure and transfer. Background Integrative and conjugative elements (ICEs) have not been detected in Pasteurella multocida. In this study the multiresistance ICEPmu1 from bovine P. multocida was analysed for its core genes and its ability to conjugatively transfer into strains of the same and different genera. Methods ICEPmu1 was identified during whole genome sequencing. Coding sequences were predicted by bioinformatic tools and manually curated using the annotation software ERGO. Conjugation into P. multocida, M ...201222001176
pasteurella multocida pneumonia: zoonotic transmission confirmed by molecular epidemiological analysis. 201222188500
ICEPmu1, an integrative conjugative element (ICE) of Pasteurella multocida: analysis of the regions that comprise 12 antimicrobial resistance genes. Background In recent years, multiresistant Pasteurella multocida isolates from bovine respiratory tract infections have been identified. These isolates have exhibited resistance to most classes of antimicrobial agents commonly used in veterinary medicine, the genetic basis of which, however, is largely unknown. Methods Genomic DNA of a representative P. multocida isolate was subjected to whole genome sequencing. Genes have been predicted by the YACOP program, compared with the SWISSProt/EMBL da ...201222001175
Epidemiology of Mycoplasma bovis in Pennsylvania veal calves. The objective of the study was to estimate the prevalence and incidence of Mycoplasma bovis, a common cause of pneumonia, in veal calves. Using simple random sampling, 252 calves from 4 veal herds located in central Pennsylvania were selected and longitudinally followed for monthly collection of nasal swabs. Bronchial swabs and lung lesions were collected at the slaughterhouse. Nasal, bronchial, and lung lesion swabs were cultured for bacterial respiratory pathogens. Ninety lung lesions were ide ...201222192204
