study of cell kinetics in anaplastic thyroid carcinoma transplanted to nude mice.the cell kinetics of the transplantable human anaplastic thyroid carcinoma were studied in athymic nude mice using bromodeoxyuridine (brdu) pulse labeling. in order to estimate the cell cycle time in this study, the percent labeled mitosis curve was prepared with immunoperoxidase staining using monoclonal antibody to brdu instead of 3[h]thymidine autoradiography. this technique was considered to be very useful because it can be done for a short term and can still be changed to the autoradiograph ...19892654483
weakness in patients with hemiparesis.clinical and experimental results are reviewed concerning muscle weakness in patients with hemiparesis after a stroke. the discussion includes the important role that alterations in the physiology of motor units, notably changes in firing rates and muscle fiber atrophy, play in the manifestation of muscle weakness. this role is compared with the lesser role that spasticity (defined as hyperactive stretch reflexes) of the antagonist muscle group appears to play in determining the weakness of agon ...20092655457
current concepts of the vestibular system reviewed: 1. the role of the vestibulospinal system in postural control.this paper reviews the research findings that support the presence of vestibulospinal reflexes in corrections for head and body instability. studies of the importance of labyrinthine inputs to the central nervous system organization of eye, head, and body movements demonstrate that the vestibular nuclei are more than a simple relay station for labyrinthine activity. at all levels of the vestibular system beyond the primary vestibular afferents, parallel processing of labyrinthine signals occurs ...20092655458

temporal synchronization in the primary auditory response in the pigeon.spike potentials were recorded from single fibres in the auditory nerve of the pigeon. in responses elicited by tonal stimuli, the timing of each spike relative to stimulus waveform was measured and period histograms were constructed. phase locking of spikes was estimated in terms of a synchronicity index obtained by vector addition within the period histogram. a second measure of synchrony in the spike responses was obtained, that of temporal dispersion. for a population of fibres, vector stren ...20082737971

ventricular arrhythmias and local electrograms after chronic regional denervation of the ischemic area in the pig heart.cardiac denervation has been proved to reduce the incidence of coronary occlusion arrhythmias in digs, but the effect of limiting the extent of sympathectomy to the ischemic area, particularly in hearts with sparse coronary collateral circulation, as in the human heart, needs further investigation. ventricular arrhythmias and changes in epicardial direct current electrograms induced during acute left anterior descending coronary artery occlusion were recorded in 14 pigs subjected to regional den ...19892738265
sleep-disordered breathing in healthy aged persons: one-year follow-up of daytime sequelae.we studied the waking medical, sleep, and psychological status of 28 healthy older persons who had undergone nocturnal polysomnography and daytime assessment approximately 1-year earlier. in a previous report based on this sample, we found that sleep-disordered breathing (sdb) indices were not related to concurrent measurements of daytime functioning. however, in the present study, we observed relationships between the original sdb indices and several measures of cardiopulmonary functioning obta ...20082740692

bronchoconstrictor action of neuropeptide y (npy) in isolated guinea pig airways.responses of various preparations of guinea pig and rat airways to synthetic porcine neuropeptide y were analysed in vitro. npy in doses up to 10(-6) m, induced a dose dependent contraction in trachea, bronchi and lung parenchymal strips of the guinea pig but did not have any effect in similar preparations obtained from the rat. in guinea pig airways the contractile responses to npy were small in size and characterized by a slow onset and a long duration. this effect of the peptide was not depen ...19892747854
mass treatment approach to acute diarrhoeal disease in afabet hospital, northern ethiopia.during an outbreak of acute diarrhoeal disease in a military camp in afabet region from august to october 1985, 416 cases were admitted to afabet hospital. all were national military service recruitee males who developed signs of moderate to severe dehydration. simplified methods of diagnosing and treating the disease were used so that mass rehydration therapy could be instituted early, using locally available manpower and material resources. the severity of dehydration was graded, and rehydrati ...20092753031
hepatic extraction of morphine is impaired in cirrhosis.using hepatic vein catheterization this study has provided the first direct measurement of morphine hepatic extraction in 8 controls and 8 cirrhotics. the extraction ratio was 0.52 in the control group and was reduced by 25% in the cirrhotics. this reduction is due to impaired enzyme capacity rather than reduced blood flow. the effect of cirrhosis is less than that reported in similar studies of high clearance oxidized drugs and this lends support to the concept that glucuronidation may be relat ...20092753069
identification and characterization of an 8-kd peptide stimulating late erythropoiesis.chronic renal failure is often associated with severe anemia, subnormal levels of erythropoietin (epo), and the presence of erythropoietic inhibitors. we studied an anephric patient with polycystic kidney disease maintaining a hemoglobin level of 13-14 g. biochemical, endocrine, and hematological parameters were all within normal limits. epo levels examined on two occasions during the clinical investigation were found to be low to subnormal. plasma of this patient supported human bone marrow ery ...19892753086
3'-fluoro-2',3'-dideoxy-5-chlorouridine: most selective anti-hiv-1 agent among a series of new 2'- and 3'-fluorinated 2',3'-dideoxynucleoside analogues.a series of 2'- and 3'-fluorinated 2',3'-dideoxynucleosides and 3'-azido-2',3'-dideoxynucleosides were synthesized and evaluated for their inhibitory activity against human immunodeficiency virus-1 (hiv-1) replication in mt-4 cells. neither conversion of 3'-fluoro- or 3'-azido-2',3'-dideoxyadenosine to the corresponding inosine derivatives nor 8-bromination of 2',3'-dideoxyadenosine resulted in increased anti-hiv-1 activity. nor did introduction of a 2'-fluorine in the erythro or threo configura ...19892754700

predictive value of a short dietary questionnaire for changes in serum lipids in high-risk utah families.dietary questionnaires and serum cholesterol, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein (hdl) cholesterol determinations were completed for 1239 subjects aged greater than or equal to 20 at each of two separate screenings. the mean time between screenings was 2.5 y. after correcting for potential confounding variables, reduction of a measure of dietary cholesterol and saturated fatty acids assessed by two simple questions was a significant independent predictor of reduction in total cholestero ...20092756916
cloning and nucleotide sequence of the gene (trh) encoding the hemolysin related to the thermostable direct hemolysin of vibrio parahaemolyticus.vibrio parahaemolyticus isolates derived from an outbreak of gastroenteritis in the republic of maldives did not have the genetic potential to produce the thermostable direct hemolysin, but one such isolate produced a hemolysin immunologically related to the thermostable direct hemolysin (t. honda, y. ni, and t. miwatani, infect. immun. 56:61-965, 1988). the maldives isolates hybridized with the dna probe for the gene encoding the thermostable direct hemolysin (the tdh gene) under reduced string ...19892759706
perceived distributions of the characteristics of in-group and out-group members: empirical evidence and a computer simulation.this research studied 2 properties of perceived distributions of the characteristics of social category members: the probability of differentiating (making distinctions) among category members and the perceived variability (variance) of category members. the results of 4 experiments supported the hypothesis that greater familiarity with a social group leads to greater perceived differentiation and variability regarding that group. in-group members formed more differentiated and variable distribu ...20092760805

compartmentalizing chemomechanical transduction in the ejecting heart.the efficiency of transferring the total energy generated by ventricular contraction (pressure-volume area, pva) to external work (ew) and internal work (iw) and the myocardial oxygen consumption (mvo2) at zero pva were determined during volume loading on right heart bypass before and after a 50% augmentation (cacl2, 0.03 meq/kg/min, n = 7) or depression (20 minutes of 37 degrees c ischemia with 30 minutes of reperfusion, n = 7) of the contractile state. an increased ew efficiency (64% +/- 7% vs ...19892763028
[the role of tracking in the perception of objects, moving toward each other in a narrow vertical slit line].it has been shown by means of calculation and device modeling that the observed subjective pressure of two objects moving toward one another behind a narrow vertical slit corresponds to the pressure of objects retinal projections, induced in its turn by a slowed down tracing. 180e turn of one of the moving objects is also explained by tracing.20092765575
[prospects for measuring the rheologic characteristics of human soft tissues based on the recording of their transverse rigidity].it is shown by an example of a forearm that to determine objective characteristics of rheological properties of soft human tissues by measuring their transverse stiffness (k) one should first investigate the relation between k and the diameter of the used indentor (d). the nonlinearity of the dependence k(d) for indentor diameters from 2 to 8 mm is demonstrated and it is assumed that this nonlinearity is due to heterogeneity of tissue properties in the directions normal to the axis of force acti ...19892765581
