ecology of staphylococcus aureus: characterization of strains from chicken.the majority of s. aureus strains isolated from beak-swabs and pathological processes in chicken shows coagulation of human plasma (not of bovine plasma), crystal violet-type a, hemolysine-type a, formation of fibrinolysin, not formation of dnase and reactions with the experimental phage a1591. because of the absence of dnase-formation and the reaction-specificity for phage a1591 we propose to designate these strains as host-specific variety gallinae of s. aureus. the strains from chicken are co ...1977610065

[a q fever epidemic in berlin. the epidemiological and clinical aspects].an epidemic of q fever in berlin affected at least 80 patients (45 females, 35 males; age range 1-75 years). sheep were identified as the focus of infection: they had been brought to a veterinary clinic because of nonspecific symptoms. the peak incidence of the infection was in april and may, 1992. most of the patients were staff or students at the veterinary clinic. this is the most northern and, at the same time largest, q fever epidemic recorded in germany over the last 28 years. the compleme ...19938500412
diversionary role of hoofed game in the transmission of lyme disease spirochetes.to determine whether the presence of ungulates may inhibit transmission of the agent of lyme disease (borrelia burgdorferi) while promoting the abundance of its european vector tick (ixodes ricinus), we compared the feeding density of subadult ticks on roe deer (capreolus capreolus), red deer (cervus elaphus), fallow deer (dama dama), and wild sheep (ovis ammon) near berlin and in brandenburg state, germany. the prevalence of spirochetal infection in these ticks was compared with that in ticks s ...19938517488
[diagnostic measures on the occasion of a q-fever epidemic in a sheep flock in berlin].this report gives an account of a q-fever infection in flocks of sheep, taking into consideration the epidemiological aspects. in the inner organs, and particularly in the central nervous system of affected animals, rickettsial as well as chlamydial agents were directly demonstrated by immunofluorescence and specific staining methods, as well as by isolation via cell culture. serological examination showed antibodies against both agents in sheep from flocks where the outbreak occurred.19958594853
[a q-fever pneumonia epidemic in dusseldorf].there was an unusually high incidence of atypical pneumonias in the catchment area of the rhine river near the university of düsseldorf in july 1994 during a long period of hot and dry weather. the 18 patients described in this paper (5 women and 13 men) complained of sudden onset of fever up to over 40 degrees c, often associated with severe headache and dry cough. almost all of these patients had previously been healthy and active and of young to middle age (average 38 years) without any bronc ...19968927605
[dangerous dogs in berlin in comparison to the dog population--ways to reduce the dangerousness of dogs].the law for handling and control of dogs in berlin of september 29, 2004 was enacted to prevent the risks for humans and animals when ever they have contact with dogs. "dangerous dogs" are defined by this law. there are 10 breeds of dogs supposed to be dangerous due to specific characteristics of their breed ("listed breeds"). the dangerousness of a dog's breed is not identical with the dangerousness of an individual dog. the subject of this study is to examine the potential dangerousness of dog ...200617172131
