the role of parasitic infection in the aetiology of phlyctenular eye disease.stool and urine analysis of 150 cases of phlyctenular eye disease, revealed that 115 (76.67%) were positive for intestinal parasites. the most prevalent parasites were hymenolepis nana (49.56%) followed by ascaris lumbricoides (27.82%). eosinophilia (5-10%) was detected in 90 phlycten cases (60%), 80 of them (88.8%) had parasitic infection. since h. nana can produce a type of tissue hypersensitivity, phlyctenular eye disease may be partly referred to such an infection.19911765701
centripetal flow and directed reassembly of the major sperm protein (msp) cytoskeleton in the amoeboid sperm of the nematode, ascaris suum.the cytoskeleton of the amoeboid spermatozoa of ascaris suum consists of major sperm protein (msp) filaments arranged into long, branched fiber complexes that span the length of the pseudopod and treadmill rearward continuously due to assembly and disassembly at opposite ends of the complexes (sepsenwol et al., journal of cell biology 108:55-66, (1989)). examination by video-enhanced microscopy showed that this cytoskeletal flow is tightly coupled to sperm locomotion. the fiber complexes treadmi ...19911773449
use of patients' sera for immunoperoxidase demonstration of infectious agents in paraffin sections.using patients' sera diluted from 1:10 to 1:1,000 as the primary antibodies in indirect immunoperoxidase staining, the authors visualized a variety of infectious agents in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections. the target lesions included 1) pyoderma caused by staphylococcus aureus, 2) cryptococcal infection, 3) dermal sporotrichosis, 4) colon ulcer caused by amebic dysentery, 5) cutaneous leishmaniasis, and 6) chronic liver abscess containing ova of ascaris lumbricoides. the infecti ...19911776466

estimating prevalence of community morbidity due to intestinal helminths: prevalence of infection as an indicator of the prevalence of disease.the rational design of helminth control programmes for endemic areas requires that the limited resources be focused on the communities in greatest need. the process of locality-targetting would be facilitated by a simple, inexpensive method of assessing morbidity at the community level. this paper describes how a simple model of the distribution of infection in human populations can use infection prevalence data to predict the proportion of heavy, and potentially clinically significant, infectio ...19911801353
airway inflammation in sheep with acute airway hypersensitivity to inhaled ascaris suum.in order to investigate the relationship between airway inflammation and the development of naturally occurring allergic airway hypersensitivity, the lower respiratory tract was studied in eighteen sheep 14 days after challenge with inhaled ascaris suum antigen. sheep could be classed into three groups on the basis of their response: group a (n = 6) had significant changes in both airway resistance and dynamic lung compliance; group b (n = 6) had changes in only dynamic lung compliance, and grou ...19911804794
the influence of environment and parasitism on the prevalence of asthma in two venezuelan regions.the point prevalence of bronchial asthma and the influence of environmental conditions among 100 individuals chosen from two venezuelan regions, i.e., rural and urban, were investigated by history, routine laboratory tests, determination of total and specific ige antibody to common allergens and spirometric tests. the point prevalence of bronchial asthma was 3.0% in rural subjects who were also highly parasitized by helminths and 3.6% in subjects from the urban region. a significative difference ...19911807400
comparative efficacy of single dose anthelmintics in relation to intensity of geohelminth infections.the efficacy of a single dose of albendazole 400 mg, levamisole 2.5 mg/kg, mebendazole 500 mg, mebendazole 200 mg and pyrantel pamoate 10 mg/kg was evaluated in relation to the intensity of infection of ascaris lumbricoides, necator americanus and trichuris trichiura. the study group comprised 667 3 to 12 year old children from poorer segments of the community. all 5 treatments produced high egg reduction rates ranging from 95.9% to 99.7% and substantial cure rates for ascaris infection; the dif ...19911807845
colonization of ascaris lumbricoides eggs by the fungus verticillium chlamydosporium goddard.the process of colonization of ascaris lumbricoides eggs by the fungus verticillium chlamydosporium was studied by scanning electron microscopy. the preparations were made by fractionation of egg suspension exposed to the fungus for four days and frozen in liquid nitrogen according to stÄ•rba and milácek (1986). ovicidal fungus forms an abundant ramifying mycelial network in the area between the eggs. however, egg-shells are penetrated only by some hyphae without any penetration organs produced ( ...19911808033
age-dependency of infection status and serum antibody levels in human whipworm (trichuris trichiura) infection.this study examines the age-dependency of the relationships between human infection with whipworm (trichuris trichiura) and parasite-specific antibody level measured by elisa against an extract of adult worms after preincubation of the sera with ascaris lumbricoides adult worm extract. the convex age-profile of parasite infection intensity is shown to be mirrored by an age-dependent change in age-class mean levels of igg (all subclasses except igg3), iga, igm and ige. mean antibody levels rise w ...19911811214
[pseudo-ascaris in ultrasonography of the epigastrium].a sonographically demonstrated vermicular structure in the region of the gall bladder was suspected to be an ascaris, which is to find in the biliary system occasionally. however under cholecystectomy there was not to detect a worm, only a stone in the cystic duct. in accordance to anamnesis we think it being the caudal part of a ventriculo-peritoneal drain implanted for hydrocephalus therapy.19911811661

replacement patterns of ascaris lumbricoides populations in filipino children.the replacement patterns of ascaris lumbricoides worm populations were investigated by complete deworming of 150 filipino children (0-14 years old) from both urban and rural barangays and analyzing the age distribution of the 2,072 adult worms (939 males and 1,133 females) obtained, based on seo's (1983) regression equation relating length to age. it was observed that most worm populations followed a periodic pattern of replenishment. this supports the general practice of periodic anthelminthic ...19911820650
studies on the control of hookworm and other soil-transmitted helminthiases in farmers in zhejiang province, china.different periodic selective chemotherapeutic schemes were used to control hookworm and other soil-transmitted helminthiases in eight villages in five counties in zhejiang province, china, 1985-1988. the results showed that the prevalence rates of hookworm, ascariasis, and trichuriasis decreased from 35.0-74.4%, 47.0-.76% and 22.9-47.5% to 3.2-15.8%, 9.9-47.8%, and 3.5-31.2%, respectively, using pyrantel pamoate (10 mg/kg for 1-2 days) or albendazole (400 mg for 1-2 days, once or twice a year fo ...19911820652
[trypsin and alpha-amylase activity in the pancreas of guinea pigs. iv. comparison of the effects of administration of the mixtures of volatile organic acids, invasive ova of ascaris suum and their homogenates].the activity of alpha-amylase in the experimental groups of guinea pigs was lower than in control animals. the decreased level of activity of trypsin was noted (p less than 0.05) also in infected animals, and in treatment with organic acids. in the group of guinea pigs, which was administrated homogenized eggs of parasite, the activity of enzyme was a little higher than in control animals. the infection of animals was associated with increase of relative weight of lungs. the guinea pigs treatmen ...19911822040
[effects of administration of vitamin a, b 2 and b 15 to guinea pigs during the larval stage of ascariasis on alpha-amylase activity in the lungs and kidneys].the guinea pigs were administrated vit. a (400 i.u.), vit. b2 (1 mg) or vit. b15 (5 mg). on the 9-th day of the experiment part of them was infected with 5000 invasive eggs of ascaris suum. the invasion lasted 6 days and was controlled by lungs and kidney weight, and number of larvae in the lungs. the activity of amylase was determined by saccharogenic method in both organs. in the lungs of infected animals the activity of alpha-amylase was about 3 times lower than in the control. the infection ...19911822041
[trypsin and alpha-amylase activity in the pancreas of guinea pigs. v. effects of administration of vitamin a and b 2 during the larval stage of ascariasis].the infection of guinea pigs with ascaris suum larvae resulted in decrease of the activities of trypsin and alpha-amylase, and in increase of lipase activity in extracts from their pancreas. the activity of alpha-amylase, lipase and the relative weight of lungs of infected animals which were given vitamin a, did not differ from control animals. the activity of trypsin from pancreas these animals was higher than that measured in only infected guinea pigs but it was lower than in control animals. ...19911822049
[experimental evaluation of the degree of detectability of helminths' eggs in the soil using 2 methods].sand and soil were experimentally contaminated with eggs of ascaris suum and oncospheres of hymenolepis diminuta in three doses: 500, 3000 and 5000 eggs (oncospheres) per 50 g of the ground. numbers of recovered eggs were compared with the use of the two following methods: the method of flotation and spindler's method, modified by vasilkova and ivancuk. the ground samples were investigated the following day and on the 14th day after the contamination. the samples were stored in 20 degrees c and ...19911822050
isolation of parasites on fruits and vegetables.the current fda method to recover parasites from fruits and vegetables is derived from procedures used to isolate parasitic protozoa from water. a 1kg portion of fruit or vegetable is divided into 200 g subportions. the subportions are sequentially processed in a sonic cleaning bath with 1.5 liters of detergent solution (1% sodium dodecyl sulfate, 0.1% tween 80) and sonicated for 10 minutes. as each subsample is removed, it is thoroughly drained. after this sonic treatment, the wash water is col ...19911822873
current status of food-borne parasitic zoonoses in singapore.parasitic infections adopt a rather low profile in the highly urbanized setting in singapore. very few food-borne parasitic infections are encountered. apart from a few reports of infections with clonorchis/opisthorchis, taenia spp. and hydatid disease, there are no other citations of such helminthic infections. seroprevalence surveys have shown the presence of toxoplasmosis in local meat animals (sheep, pigs and cattle) and toxoplasma strains have been isolated from the pig, tree shrew (tupaia ...19911822903
suppression of the ige antibody response by ascaris suum components: effect of x-irradiation.the effect of x-irradiation on the suppression of ige antibody responses induced by some of the ascaris suum (asc) components was analyzed in mice (7-week old a/sn females). treatment with 300 r 24 h before immunization with 50 micrograms ova and 200 micrograms asc suppressive components abolished the damping effect on anti-ova ige antibody levels. the same effect was observed on the anti-asc ige antibody response obtained in mice injected with 200 micrograms asc immunogenic plus 200 micrograms ...19911823275
effector-induced conformational transitions in ascaris suum phosphofructokinase. a fluorescence and circular dichroism study.results of activity and spectral studies using fluorescence and circular dichroism show that amp and fructose 2,6-bisphosphate (f-2,6-p2) activate ascaris suum phosphofructokinase through specific and similar conformational changes. inorganic compounds like (nh4)2so4 and kh2po4 also induce structural alterations in the enzyme in a manner different from those caused by amp and f-2,6-p2. the enzyme is activated by both amp and f-2,6-p2, in 20 mm phosphate buffer, ph 6.6, with 0.2 mm atp and 1 mm f ...19911827437
fructose 2,6-bisphosphate and amp increase the affinity of the ascaris suum phosphofructokinase for fructose 6-phosphate in a process separate from the relief of atp inhibition.kinetic data have been collected suggesting that heterotropic activation by fructose 2,6-bisphosphate and amp is a result not only of the relief of allosteric inhibition by atp but is also the result of an increase in the affinity of phosphofructokinase for fructose 6-phosphate. modification of the ascaris suum phosphofructokinase at the atp inhibitory site produces a form of the enzyme that no longer has hysteretic time courses or homotropic positive (fructose 6-phosphate) cooperativity or subs ...19911827438
trypsin modification of phosphofructokinase from ascaris suum.phosphofructokinase from ascaris suum is a tetramer with subunits of 90 kda. treatment of the native enzyme with trypsin (10%, w/w) followed by sds-gel electrophoresis was shown to immediately generate a 40-kda fragment followed by a gradual formation of two other fragments of 37 and 32 kda. the loss of catalytic activity during the digestion was less than 50%. gel filtration of the digested enzyme under non-denaturing conditions showed a mr almost that of the native enzyme. digestion of the pho ...19911828862
identification and isolation of a specific antigen with diagnostic potential from dictyocaulus viviparus.the purpose of the investigation was to isolate and identify a specific antigen of dictyocaulus viviparus that can be used to diagnose lungworm infections in cattle. somatic, excretion and secretion antigens of adult d. viviparus and somatic antigens of l3 larvae were examined in an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (elisa) to determine whether they cross-reacted with sera collected from calves with mono-infections of fasciola hepatica. ostertagia ostertagi, ascaris suum, or cooperia on ...19911832795
transmission of intestinal helminths in danish sow herds.faecal samples from sows and their litters, all untreated with anthelmintics, were examined in eight sow herds, ranging from very intensive to very traditional management. four helminth genera were recorded, namely oesophagostomum sp., ascaris suum, trichuris suis and strongyloides ransomi. the herds with the most intensive management were only infected with a. suum, while the more traditionally managed herds were infected with three or four species. in one herd, the sows showed a small relative ...19911832796
modification of the atp inhibitory site of the ascaris suum phosphofructokinase results in the stabilization of an inactive t state.treatment of the ascaris suum phosphofructokinase (pfk) with 2',3'-dialdehyde atp (oatp) results in an enzyme form that is inactive. the conformational integrity of the active site, however, is preserved, suggesting that oatp modification locks the pfk into an inactive t state that cannot be activated. a rapid, irreversible first-order inactivation of the pfk is observed in the presence of oatp. the rate of inactivation is saturable and gives a koatp of 1.07 +/- 0.27 mm. complete protection agai ...19911832959
u small nuclear ribonucleoprotein requirements for nematode cis- and trans-splicing in vitro.in nematodes, a fraction of mrnas acquires a common 22-nucleotide 5'-terminal spliced leader sequence via a trans-splicing reaction. the same premessenger rnas which receive the spliced leader are also processed by conventional cis-splicing. whole cell extracts prepared from synchronous embryos of the parasitic nematode ascaris lumbricoides catalyze both cis- and trans-splicing. we have used this cell-free system and oligodeoxynucleotide directed rnase h digestion to assess the u small nuclear r ...19911835972

proteolysis inhibitors from ascaris lumbricoides: fact or fiction?the results of our own 25 years investigations on biological activity of proteolytic inhibitors of ascaris lumbricoides with the help of various experimental models were discussed. as it results from these studies alpha-chymotrypsin and trypsin inhibitors from a. lumbricoides are not fiction but are substances with significant biological activity, which may be important in regulation of the host-parasite system as well as parasite pathogenic factor.19911844783
[helminth and protozoan intestinal infections in pregnant women in their first consultation at health centers of the state in the butantã subdistrict, são paulo city].481 pregnant women attended at first consultation from a são paulo city suburb-subdistrict of butantan-são paulo state, brazil, from april to october of 1988, were investigated regarding the prevalence of verminosis. the mean age was 24.5 years (range 14-46), the average family income was 0.97 pcmw (per capita minimum wage) and the average number of members of the family was 4 (1 to 15). the verminosis prevalence was 45.1% among the women. the most frequent parasites were: ascaris lumbricoides ( ...19911844952
[comparison of several coproparasitological techniques for the diagnosis of soil-transmitted intestinal helminthiasis].five hundred and eleven samples of feces were examined by several coproparasitological techniques: kato-katz, willis, ritchie and direct wet mount. it was found that kato-katz was the most reliable technique for the diagnosis of trichuris trichiura, necator americanus, and ascaris lumbricoides, demonstrating the largest number of cases. willis, ritchie and direct wet mount were effective in that order. taking into account that kato-katz is a quantitative method, it should be recommended in the d ...19911844969
ascaris lumbricoides: reinfection in children bearing an established worm burden.to clarify the existence of reinfection in children bearing an established ascaris lumbricoides infection, the authors evaluated the weight and the length of worms collected from ten cases of ascaridiasis. the worm burden was greater than 27 worms in nine cases. in seven cases the weight and the length of worms showed little variation, with unimodal distribution of values, suggesting that all the worms in each case belong to the same population, originated from a single brood infection or from s ...19911845006
[ascariasis pancreatitis. endoscopic diagnosis and therapy].ascariasis lumbricoides is a parasitic disease of the human gastrointestinal tract. migration of the worm through orifices and into ducts leads to such complications as cholangitis and pancreatitis; even bile duct perforation by ascaris have been reported. treatment of biliary ascariasis is usually surgical, although endoscopic removal of the worm has been successfully performed. we report on a case in whom an ascaris worm in the common bile duct led to acute pancreatitis; the worm was successfu ...19911855753
initial characterization of several actin genes in the parasitic nematode, ascaris suum.southern hybridization data suggest a large actin gene family in ascaris suum. our genomic reconstruction experiment indicated that it consists of 50-75 members. polymorphism was uncovered in the actin genes or in their surrounding sequences. from the genomic library 5 nonoverlapping actin clones were isolated and characterized.19911859418
purification and physical properties of nematode mini-titins and their relation to twitchin.we have isolated mini-titin from the nematodes ascaris lumbricoides and caenorhabditis elegans under native conditions using a modification in the procedure to prepare this protein from insect muscle. the proteins have an apparent molecular weight of 600,000 and appear in oriented specimens as flexible thin rods with a length around 240-250 nm. the circular dichroism spectrum of the ascaris protein is dominated by beta-structure. the proteins react with antibodies to insect mini-titin and also w ...19911860900
cut-1 a caenorhabditis elegans gene coding for a dauer-specific noncollagenous component of the cuticle.we have molecularly identified a new gene of caenorhabditis elegans that codes for a component of the cuticle. the gene has been physically mapped on lgii near the locus sqt-1. the structure and the sequence of the gene have been determined and antisera have been raised against parts of the protein produced as fusions in escherichia coli. by transcription analysis, and by the use of specific antisera, we have determined that this gene is expressed specifically during dauer larva formation. in ex ...19911864469
a versatile dot-elisa method with femtomole sensitivity for detecting small peptides.several protocols for conjugating peptides in situ to a protein carrier on paper, nitrocellulose, or nylon membranes were explored for their usefulness in dot-elisa detection of the peptides. the most sensitive method in which peptide diluted in bovine serum albumin is applied to nitrocellulose, then fixed with glutaraldehyde, can detect several peptides, ranging from 4 to 38 amino acids in length, at the level of 2-10 fmol. both immunohistochemical grade antisera and monoclonal antibodies have ...19911865121
gaba-immunoreactive neurons in the nematode ascaris.gamma-aminobutyric acid (gaba) immunoreactive neurons in the cephalic, somatic, and caudal regions of the ascaris nervous system were visualized with serial section and whole-mount gaba immunocytochemistry. in the ventral and dorsal nerve cords, gaba-like immunoreactivity (glir) is localized to the neurites and cell bodies of identified inhibitory motor neurons and to two fibers, one in each cord, that arise from neurons in the nerve ring. glir is absent from identified excitatory motor neurons ...19911869633
distribution of 3h-gaba uptake sites in the nematode ascaris.the distribution of uptake sites for the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (gaba) in the nematode ascaris suum was examined by autoradiography of 3h-gaba uptake. single neural processes in both the ventral and dorsal nerve cords were labeled with 3h-gaba. serial section analysis identified the cells of origin of these processes as the rmev-like and rmed-like neurons. these cells belong to a set of four neurons in the nerve ring, all of which are labeled by 3h-gaba. 3h-gaba labe ...19911869634
stimulation of leukocyte lysophospholipase activity by noninfectious agents.mouse peritoneal leukocyte lysophospholipase (lpl) activity was studied to determine whether or not noninfectious agents cause increased enzyme activity and whether neutrophils have lpl activity. in the first study, mice infected with ascaris suum, a known inducer of lpl activity, were given intraperitoneal injections of proteose peptone, thioglycolate, bovine albumin, paraffin, glycogen, or a. suum whole worm extract (wwe). cell populations collected from mice injected with a. suum wwe, proteos ...19911871154
nonspecific immunomodulation influences resistance of mice to experimental infection with mesocestoides corti and ascaris suum.the influence of nonspecific immunomodulation on the course of experimental infection was examined in larval cestodosis (mesocestoides corti) and ascaridosis (ascaris suum) in mice. immunosuppressive treatment (with azathioprine or hydrocortisone) resulted in a decrease of resistance in both models. the subsequent administration of t-activin to immunosuppressed mice led to the restoration of resistance to a level equal to that of untreated control mice. the administration of different immunomodu ...19911880386
in vitro effect of larval stages of ascaris lumbricoides on human blood clotting.the effects of larval stages of ascaris lumbricoides on human blood clotting was studied in vitro. extracts and excretory/secretory products of third-stage larvae (l3) and late third-stage larvae (ll3) cultured from ova obtained from infected patients were analysed for anti-coagulant activity. prothrombin time (pt) was prolonged by the addition of either whole extract of l3/ll3 or es products of l3/ll3 as compared to controls. partial thromboplastin time with kaolin (pttk) was also prolonged on ...19911880387
factors influencing the egg production of ascaris lumbricoides: relationship to weight, length and diameter of worms.fifty children aged 6 to 13 years and infected with ascaris lumbricoides were selected for the study. the number of eggs laid daily by a female ascaris increased with increase in its length, weight and diameter. female worms became mature and started laying eggs when they reached a length of 118 mm. adult female worms measuring 3.7 mm or more in diameter were found to be mature. the minimum weight of a worm producing eggs was 1.1 g. on average the number of eggs produced by the female decreased ...19911880388
