the laboratory diagnosis of periodontal infections. 19959567931
a 5-year study of attachment loss and tooth loss in community-dwelling older adults.tooth loss is a widely recognized endpoint measure for the effects of periodontal diseases and the impact of periodontal therapy. in fact, traditional clinical measures of periodontal status often are considered to be surrogate endpoints in that they are assumed to be related to tooth loss. however, the strength of the relationship between attachment loss and tooth loss in a representative population of untreated subjects has not been studied extensively. the purpose of this paper is to present ...19979379319
dental plaque flora of the dog with reference to fastidious and anaerobic bacteria associated with bites.animal bite wounds are amongst the most common types of traumatic injuries in humans. the organisms isolated from these wounds generally reflect the oral flora of the biting animal, and may be fastidious in nature and difficult to identify. this study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of eikenella corrodens, actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, porphyromonas and prevotella spp. in supragingival dental plaque collected from the right maxillary canine and carnassial teeth and the right m ...19979571899
beta-sheet antibiotic peptides as potential dental therapeutics.small, cysteine-rich, beta-sheet peptide antibiotics are found throughout the animalia. though broad spectrum in potential, they may exert selective antimicrobial effects under certain conditions. we have explored the antimicrobial properties of two families of beta-sheet peptide antibiotics, defensins and protegrins, against periodontopathic bacteria. the rabbit defensin np-1 was active against facultative gram-negative bacteria associated with early onset periodontitis, including actinobacillu ...19989573496
identification of hemolytic activity in prevotella intermedia.hemolysin production was measured in strains of prevotella intermedia. zones of beta-hemolysis were detected on agar plates supplemented with either sheep, rabbit or human erythrocytes. a standard tube assay was performed on cell suspensions of the organism to measure hemolytic activity, which was found to be dose dependent, eliminated by heat treatment, and saturable with increasing concentrations of blood. growth-phase experiments suggested that hemolysin production was increased during logari ...19989573800
longitudinal evaluation of the development of periodontal destruction in spouses.the aim of the present investigation was to study longitudinally the periodontal condition of married couples. the data are derived from a longitudinal study in a young population living in a remote village in indonesia and showing a relatively high prevalence of periodontal destruction. in 23 married couples, clinical measurements were carried out in 1987 and 1994. during the latter examination, a pooled gingival sample was obtained for microbiological evaluation. in 1994, the mean age of the g ...19968951630
identification of bacterial species on or in crevicular epithelial cells from healthy and periodontally diseased patients using dna-dna hybridization.the purpose of this investigation was to identify bacterial species present on or in crevicular epithelial cells in healthy and diseased sites using dna probes. in order to achieve this aim, further improvements were made in the separation of unattached bacteria from those adherent to epithelial cells isolated from the human gingival crevice or periodontal pocket. then the dna probes were used to determine the prevalence of detectable dna from 15 microbial species on or in crevicular epithelial ...19989573819
