herd problem of abortions and malformed calves attributed to bovine viral diarrhea.a herd problem of abortions and the birth of malformed calves developed subsequent to a transient febrile illness in adult cows. the herd was not vaccinated against bovine viral diarrhea (bvd). bovine viral diarrhea virus was isolated from blood of one calf. the problem continued for 8 months. the entire herd was vaccinated with a killed bvd virus product. no further problems developed. this herd problem illustrates one of the many recognized clinical manifestations of bvd.19863957770
bovine viral diarrhea in a newborn calf.bovine viral diarrhea virus was believed to be the cause of ill-thrift since birth, resulting in death of a holstein calf. bovine viral diarrhea virus was isolated from peyer's patches and mesenteric lymph nodes, but serum neutralizing antibodies were not detected. the lymphoid depletion and myeloid suppression seen in this case may be a factor in the immune system dysfunction described for bovine viral diarrhea. typical ulcerative lesions within the alimentary tract were not observed.19853988595
morphometric studies of the bovine uterus: microscopic lesions and retrospective reproductive history.a survey of reproductive tracts from nonpregnant cows at an abattoir was conducted. reproductive tracts from 98 cows were studied microscopically and evaluated with a grading system to determine the severity of pathologic changes. inflammatory reaction (type and distribution), fibrosis, gland morphology, and appearance were measured, quantified, and scored (1 to 4). category 1 endometrium (normal) was found in 18 cows, category 2 in 23, category 3 in 34, and category 4 in 23. the category of end ...19854083598

bovine viral diarrhea virus and escherichia coli in neonatal calf enteritis.this study was initiated to determine the etiologic and pathogenic significance of an american strain of bovine viral diarrhea (bvd) virus (strain nadl-md) in enteritis of neonatal calves (calf scours). three colostrum-fed calves from dams exposed intravenously to bvd virus at 6, 16 and 25 days prepartum, respectively, had moderate diarrhea persisting until the eighth day of life. the bvd virus was isolated from all 3 calves and persisted up to 93 days in 1 calf, indicating either that bvd was t ...19684233834
a study of bovine virus diarrhea mucosal disease virus by plaque technique.bovine virus diarrhea-mucosal disease (bvd-md), nadl, strain formed 3-4 mm plaques on monolayers of bovine embryo kidney (bek), lung and testicular (bet) cell cultures on post inoculation day four. plaques were 1.5 mm on the post inoculation day five in lamb testicular cell cultures. neutral red incorporated in first overlay had inhibitory effect on plaque formation in these cell-virus systems. the study of effects of environmental variables on plaquing efficiency indicated that virus adsorption ...19694242771
bovine viral diarrhea virus in swine: characteristics of virus recovered from naturally and experimentally infected swine.a noncytopathogenic field strain of bovine viral diarrhea virus (bvdv) was isolated from an iowa farm brood sow and from her hysterectomy-derived, colostrum-deprived (hdcd) piglets. this field isolant was fully virulent for a neonatal calf. the nadl strain of bvdv was passaged through a series of hdcd piglets with no resultant loss of virulence for neonatal calves. most of the bvd viral isolants recovered from pigs had been changed from a cytopathogenic biotype to a noncytopathogenic biotype. ci ...19734265548
bovine viral diarrhea virus in swine: neutralizing antibody in naturally and experimentally infected swine.neutralizing antibodies against bovine viral diarrhea virus (bvdv) were detected in sera of iowa farm sows, their piglets derived by hysterectomy and in specific-pathogen-free (spf) pigs in a closed herd. no antibodies against bvdv were detected in sera of 134 fetal pigs from 67 sows in an iowa slaughter-house. neutralizing antibodies against bvdv or hog cholera virus, produced experimentally in spf pigs, were demonstrated to be due to different antigens rather than to a common antigen, although ...19734265558

experimental production of fatal mucosal disease in cattle.three outbreaks of mucosal disease were investigated. careful examination of 47 cattle that were persistently viraemic with bovine virus diarrhoea virus (bvdv) revealed no clinical disease, no or low levels of bvdv antibody and only non-cytopathic virus in their blood. the four animals with mucosal disease all showed clinical disease and both cytopathic and non-cytopathic virus in their blood. following post mortem examination, there were particularly high levels of cytopathic virus in gut tissu ...19846087539
bovine virus diarrhoea-mucosal disease virus-induced fetopathy in cattle: efficacy of prophylactic maternal pre-exposure.maternal immunity was produced in jersey heifers by exposing them to bovine virus diarrhoea-mucosal disease virus before conception. in the following pregnancy this immunity protected the fetuses from transplacental infection arising from challenge of the dams at 100 days gestation with homologous virus. unprotected jersey heifers showed a high incidence of death and fetal intrauterine growth retardation associated with transplacental viral infection. functional normality of the locomotor system ...19846087540
nature of early reproductive failure caused by bovine viral diarrhea virus.a 2-part study was undertaken to determine the effect of bovine viral diarrhea (bvd) virus on fertilization and early development of embryos. in experiment 1, 10 seronegative cows were superovulated and artificially inseminated twice during estrus. after the second insemination, 5 of the cows received intrauterine infusion of bvd virus suspension. the other 5 cows received suspending medium only and served as controls. all 10 cows were slaughtered on day 3, and ova and embryos were collected for ...19846088456
experimental production of bovine respiratory tract disease with bovine viral diarrhea virus.five 6-month-old calves were inoculated with bovine viral diarrhea (bvd) virus (n = 3) or pasteurella haemolytica (n = 2) endobronchially with a fiberoptic bronchoscope. five additional calves were inoculated sequentially with bvd virus followed by p haemolytica at a 5-day interval. blood samples were collected daily from the calves for bacterial isolation. clinical signs of respiratory tract disease in calves were recorded daily. if the calves survived, they were killed for necropsy 3 or 4 days ...19846089623
prevalence of antibodies to bovine respiratory syncytial virus, bovine viral diarrhea virus, bovine herpesvirus-1, and bovine parainfluenza-3 virus in sheep and goats in quebec.serum samples were collected from 1,075 clinically normal sheep and goats from 77 flocks in 7 agricultural regions of quebec from june to august 1982. sheep and goats were tested for antibodies to bovine respiratory syncytial virus, bovine viral diarrhea virus, and bovine herpes-virus-1 by the indirect fluorescent antibody technique and for parainfluenza-3 virus by the hemagglutination inhibition test. the prevalence of antibodies in animals to respiratory syncytial virus was 31%; to bovine vira ...19846089626
cell-free translation of bovine viral diarrhea virus rna.bovine viral diarrhea virus rna was translated in a reticulocyte cell-free protein synthesizing system. the purified, 8.2-kilobase, virus-specific rna species was unable to serve an an efficient message unless it was denatured immediately before translation. in this case, several polypeptides, ranging in molecular weight from 50,000 to 150,000 and most of which were immunoprecipitated by bovine viral diarrhea virus-specific antiserum, were synthesized in vitro. when polyribosomes were used to pr ...19846092725
differentiation of cytopathic and noncytopathic isolates of bovine viral diarrhea virus by virus neutralization.soluble antigens of cytopathic and noncytopathic isolates of bovine viral diarrhea virus were resolved by high-performance liquid gel-permeation chromatography into 4 major and 3 minor peaks. the 2 peaks with the larger molecular weights (240,000 and 140,000 daltons) were immunogenic when inoculated into rabbits. virus neutralizing antibodies were specific for the homologous virus. the soluble antigens were determined to be greater than 100,000 daltons by filtration.19846093646
evaluation of bovine viral diarrhea virus uptake by preimplantation embryos.bovine embryos were exposed to bovine viral diarrhea (bvd) virus in vitro. an uptake of bvd virus by the embryos could not be detected by several assay systems. a significant decrease in the titer of bvd virus was found to occur when the virus was incubated in saline solution + 5% goat serum or minimal essential medium + 5% goat serum for 24 hours at 37 c. since there was significant inactivation of the bvd virus during the incubation period, lack of viral infectivity of the embryos may have bee ...19846093648
outbreak of mucosal disease among apparently immunotolerant heifers.an outbreak of mucosal disease that occurred among friesian heifers aged 15 to 18 months is described as it occurred. investigation suggested that many heifers were immunotolerant to bovine virus diarrhoea-mucosal disease virus. serious losses were incurred. the present policy of surveillance is described.19846097016

factors affecting the assay of bovine type i interferon on bovine embryonic lung cells.one preparation of interferon (if) on 7-day-old bovine embryonic lung cultures free of bovine viral diarrhea virus had titers ranging from 20 to 10,240 in plaque-reduction tests, using bovine vesicular stomatitis virus. factors believed to contribute to this variation were investigated. although titers differed on different cell strains, different passages, and on cultures of different ages, variations between the two assays definitely could not be established as a function of these factors. how ...19806157340
factors affecting the production of bovine type i interferon on bovine embryonic lung cells by polyriboinosinic-polyribocytidylic acid.variables believed to affect the amount of interferon (if) produced in bovine embryonic lung cell cultures by polyriboinosinic-polyribocytidylic acid (poly (ri:rc)) were investigated. a concentration of 100 micron of poly (ri:rc)/ml consistently induced substantial amounts of if. bovine viral diarrhea virus infection of cultures did not interfere with induction of if by poly (ri:rc). neither the age of cells nor the passage level of the cultures seemed to affect the amount of if produced. primin ...19806157341
use of an immunoperoxidase stain for the demonstration of bovine viral diarrhea virus by light and electron microscopies.bovine viral diarrhea (bvd) virus-specific antiserum eluted from an immunoabsorbent column was conjugated with horseradish peroxidase. the immunoperoxidase (ip) conjugate was used to stain bvd virus-inoculated and control tissue cultures processed for light and electron microscopies. infected cells (in the inoculated cultures) viewed by light microscopy had diffuse staining of the cytoplasm of nonvacuolated cells and a more predominant staining associated with vacuoles as vacuolation occurred. t ...19846200012

demonstration of bovine viral diarrhea virus antigen in cryostat- and paraffin-sections of bovine tissues by the immunoperoxidase technique.an immunoperoxidase technique (ipt) for the demonstration of bovine viral diarrhea virus (bvdv) antigen in tissue sections is presented. the method was applied to cryostat sections and to alcohol fixed, paraffin embedded specimens. the specificity as well as the sensitivity of the ipt corresponded to the immunofluorescence technique (ift), and the specimen processing methods used represented an improvement of the histomorphological preservation of tissue structures.19816274148
effects of incubation temperatures and bovine viral diarrhea virus immune serum on bovine turbinate cells persistently infected with a noncytopathogenic isolate of bovine viral diarrhea virus.noncytopathogenic bovine viral diarrhea virus (bvdv) on initial inoculation in receptive cells induced a persistence in vitro at incubation temperatures of 33, 37, and 39 c. the mechanisms of this persistence were not the result of the induction of defective interfering particles or the selection of temperature-sensitive mutants, but were the result of a naturally occurring noncytopathogenic isolate of bvdv. persistently infected cells were not freed of the infection by continuous passage in med ...19816277214
electron microscopic studies of bovine viral diarrhea virus in tissues of diseased calves and in cell cultures.pathomorphological studies by electron microscopy (em) were carried out on the intestines and lymphoid tissues, the buffy coat cells and cultured lymphocytes from calves suffering from mucosal disease (md). this led to the detection of particles, 45--55 nm in diameter, within characteristic vesicular structures. as these findings coincided with the isolation of bovine viral diarrhea virus (bvdv) from the same tissues and demonstration of bvdv-antigen by immunocytochemical techniques in correspon ...19826279056
border disease in a flock of minnesota sheep.a flock problem affecting newborn lambs on a minnesota farm was investigated. the lambs had hairy fleece and rhythmic tremors, and were unthrifty. histologic examination revealed hypomyelinization of the cns and hypertrophy of primary follicles in the skin. a virus antigenically related to bovine viral diarrhea virus was isolated. serum neutralization showed that a large number of flock ewes had much higher titers to bovine viral diarrhea virus than did control animals.19826279553

experimental fetal infection with bovine viral diarrhea virus. i. virological and serological studies.the serological and virological results of an experimental infection of bovine fetuses with bovine viral diarrhea virus are presented. four fetuses, 120-165 days gestational age, were inoculated in utero with a second passage virus strain. two fetuses received a sham-inoculum. a humoral immune response in the virus-inoculated fetuses, was demonstrated three weeks later. in three fetuses only igm and igg1 were detectable. the serum from the fourth fetus also contained igg2 and iga. bovine viral d ...19826293687
experimental fetal infection with bovine viral diarrhea virus. ii. morphological reactions and distribution of viral antigen.the effect of an infection with bovine viral diarrhea virus on fetal bovine tissues as well as the tissue-localization of viral antigen are described. four bovine fetuses, 120-165 days of gestation, were inoculated in utero with a second passage virus strain. lymphoid tissues were studied by light and electron microscopy. the infection induced precocious development of the secondary lymphoid organs. characteristic changes were seen in postcapillary venules, cells of the mononuclear phagocyte sys ...19826293688
