[parvovirus b19 infection in hydrops fetalis].in a retrospective study from 210 foetal autopsies carried out in a period between 1992 and 1999 fifteen hydropic foetuses were found. the cause of the hydrops was shown to be rh incompatibility in one case only. the cause of hydrops was not discernible in one case. in the others pathological examination clarified the cause and pathomechanism of non-immune hydrops. one isolated cystic hygroma, one monochorionic twin pregnancy with twin to twin transfusion, one case of sacrococcygeal teratoma and ...200010962903
identification of a novel rna splicing pattern as a basis of restricted cell tropism of erythrovirus b19.prior studies on the transcription of erythrovirus b19 have identified a short leader sequence associated with all spliced viral transcripts. while some variability has been observed in the acceptor for this first intron, studies to date in both permissive and nonpermissive cell types have reported a unique splice donor site. in the semipermissive mb-02 cell line, we have found that splicing of this first intron proceeds almost exclusively via a cryptic ct donor downstream of the previously repo ...200010964772

neutropenia accompanying parvovirus b19 infection after gynecologic surgery.the hematologic data and symptoms of 7 patients seropositive for parvovirus b19 igm antibody after gynecologic surgery were analysed. parvovirus may have been transmitted by fibrin glue prepared from heat-treated human plasma and used for hemostasis during surgery. the peripheral blood neutrophil count decreased to below 1 x 10(9)/l between postoperative day (pod) 10 and 18, but recovered spontaneously to within the normal range. g-csf injection was effective in preventing neutropenia or obtaini ...200011014891
[leukocytopenia and thrombocytopenia preceded by human parvovirus b19 infection: report of three adult cases].in saiki city, oita, japan, erythema infectiosum in children has been prevalent from june, 1999 to the time of writing (january, 2000). we present three adult cases of parvovirus b19-associated leukocytopenia and thrombocytopenia that developed during this epidemic. between june and november, 1999, a 32-year-old woman, a 38-year-old woman, and a 63-year-old man were referred to our hospital for treatment of leukocytopenia and thrombocytopenia. all complained of common cold-like symptoms. their w ...200011020984
passive immunity in prevention and treatment of infectious diseases.antibodies have been used for over a century in the prevention and treatment of infectious disease. they are used most commonly for the prevention of measles, hepatitis a, hepatitis b, tetanus, varicella, rabies, and vaccinia. although their use in the treatment of bacterial infection has largely been supplanted by antibiotics, antibodies remain a critical component of the treatment of diptheria, tetanus, and botulism. high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin can be used to treat certain viral infec ...200011023960
impaired gamma interferon responses against parvovirus b19 by recently infected children.parvovirus b19 is the causative agent of "fifth disease" of childhood. it has been implicated in a variety of conditions, including unsuccessful pregnancy and rheumatoid arthritis, and is a potential contaminant of blood products. there has been little study of immunity to parvovirus b19, and the exact nature of the protective humoral and cell-mediated immune response is unclear. immune responses to purified virus capsid proteins, vp1 and vp2, were examined from a cohort of recently infected chi ...200011024117

tyramide signal amplification of biotinylated probe in dot-blot hybridization assay for the detection of parvovirus b19 dna in serum samples.highly sensitive assay systems are necessary for large-scale virological screenings. we evaluated the use of tyramide signal amplification (tsa) for biotinylated probe in dot-blot hybridization assay to detect b19 dna in serum samples. the probe was constructed by pcr and directly labeled with biotin during amplification reaction. the sensitivity of the dot-blot hybridization assay with tsa detection method was evaluated in comparison with a hybridization assay using the direct detection of biot ...200011074066
viral safety of haemophilia treatment products.the epidemics of hiv and hepatitis c in treated haemophiliacs spurred rapid technological advances in the viral safety of clotting factor concentrates produced from large donor pools. sequential steps are now employed to minimize infectious risks. the initial viral burden is reduced by screening donors and by testing individual donations and plasma pools for antivirus antibodies, viral antigens, and nucleic acid. these techniques are supplemented by nonspecific viral reduction steps based on phy ...200011087169
infection with parvovirus b19.human parvovirus b19 is common and widespread. major manifestations of b19 infection are transient aplastic crisis, erythema infectiosum, hydrops fetalis, acute and chronic rheumatoid-like arthropathy and, in the immunocompromised host, chronic or recurrent bone marrow infection. less common presentations include skin eruptions, isolated cytopenias, vasculitis, hepatitis, and neuropathies. increasing awareness of the clinical manifestations of b19 infection makes parvovirus b19 an emerging virus ...199911095799
survey of parvovirus b19 infection in a cohort of pregnant women in belém, brazil.in our study, 300 pregnant women were screened for the presence of human parvovirus b19 igg and igm antibodies by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (elisa). overall, 253 (84.3%) were found to be igg-positive and igm-negative (igg+gm ), 42 (14%) had neither igg nor igm antibodies (igg /igm ) and 5 (1.7%) were both igm- and igg-positive (igg+/igm+). maternal serology was performed routinely for cytomegalovirus, rubella, toxoplasmosis and syphilis. all igg /igm and igg+/igm+ women were followed ...199911098187
a causal role for parvovirus b19 infection in adult dermatomyositis and other autoimmune syndromes.infection with parvovirus b19 (b19) has been associated with connective tissue disease (ctd) stigmata, namely, a systemic lupus erythematosus (sle)-like illness, seronegative polyarthritis resembling rheumatoid arthritis, and vasculitis. the dermatopathology and pathogenetic basis of such b19-associated ctd-like syndromes have not been elucidated.200011100810
renal involvement of human parvovirus b19 in an immunocompetent host.human parvovirus b19, which is most commonly known to cause erythema infectiosum in children, is also known to cause infection in adults, with complications ranging from a self-limited polyarthropathy in immunocompetent patients to hydrops fetalis in pregnant women, transient aplastic crises in patients with chronic hemolytic anemias, and chronic aplastic anemia in immunocompromised hosts. we describe a previously healthy immunocompetent woman who presented with manifestations of acute parvoviru ...200111106317
[genetic diversity of viruses. consequences for screening and prevention].the evolution of viruses contributes to their diversification, whether it be a result of their own replication, or host-pressure dependent. certain viral types, groups or subtypes are therefore found in certain regions of the world or in certain populations. the development of blood screening reagents is nearly always based on viral antigens or viral sequences derived from 'prototype' strains or antibodies raised against these prototype strains. therefore in situations where an individual is inf ...200011109632
