the effects of methoprene s on the aquatic bug ilyocoris cimicoides (heteroptera, naucoridae).the effects of methoprene s on the last instar nymphs of ilyocoris cimicoides were investigated. continual treatment during the last larval instar at concentrations of 0.02-0.1 ppm caused disorders in metamorphosis. supernumerary larval instars were observed and imaginal ecdysis was frequently deranged. morphological defects are described in detail. the compound did not affect the length of the last larval instar. it was toxic at 0.2 ppm ml(-1) of water and higher concentrations.199424201932
f-actin, beta-tubulin, aldolase, and fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase in heteropteran ovarioles--i. immunocytochemical investigations of whole-mounted ovarioles.the distribution of f-actin, beta-tubulin, aldolase, and fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase (fbpase) in ovarioles of four heteropteran species (ilyocoris cimicoides, coreus marginatus, lygus pratensis, and notostira elongata) was investigated biochemically and immunocytochemically. aldolase was found to be uniformly distributed in the cytoplasm of trophocytes and follicular cells, with the highest concentration in prefollicular cells. its concentration in follicular cells increased during differentiati ...200515947967
a novel adipokinetic peptide in a water boatman (heteroptera, corixidae) and its bioanalogue in a saucer bug (heteroptera, naucoridae).the corpora cardiaca (cc) of two water bug species, the water boatman corixa punctata and the saucer bug ilyocoris cimicoides, contain a substance that cause hyperlipemia in the migratory locust. the primary sequence of one octapeptide belonging to the adipokinetic hormone (akh)/red pigment-concentrating hormone (rpch) family was deduced from the multiple ms(n) electrospray mass data of cc material from each species. whereas the saucer bug contains the known octapeptide pglu-val-asn-phe-ser-pro- ...200717215060
the first decapeptide adipokinetic hormone (akh) in heteroptera: a novel akh from a south african saucer bug, laccocoris spurcus (naucoridae, laccocorinae).a novel peptide of the adipokinetic hormone (akh)/red pigment-concentrating hormone (rpch) family has been elucidated by mass spectrometry from the corpora cardiaca of an african saucer bug species, laccocoris spurcus. it is the first decapeptide member found in the species-rich taxon heteroptera, has the primary sequence pglu-val-asn-phe-ser-pro-ser-trp-gly-gly amide and is denoted as lacsp-akh. the first eight amino acids are identical to the octapeptide anaim-akh of the european saucer bug, i ...201120969908
dry under water: comparative morphology and functional aspects of air-retaining insect surfaces.superhydrophobic surfaces prevent certain body parts of semiaquatic and aquatic insects from getting wet while submerged in water. the air layer on these surfaces can serve the insects as a physical gill. using scanning electron microscopy, we investigated the morphology of air-retaining surfaces in five insect species with different levels of adaptation to aquatic habitats. we found surfaces with either large and sparse hairs (setae), small and dense hairs (microtrichia), or hierarchically stru ...201121290417
oxygen-limited thermal tolerance is seen in a plastron-breathing insect and can be induced in a bimodal gas exchanger.thermal tolerance has been hypothesized to result from a mismatch between oxygen supply and demand. however, the generality of this hypothesis has been challenged by studies on various animal groups, including air-breathing adult insects. recently, comparisons across taxa have suggested that differences in gas exchange mechanisms could reconcile the discrepancies found in previous studies. here, we test this suggestion by comparing the behaviour of related insect taxa with different gas exchange ...201525964420
aquatic and semiaquatic heteroptera (nepomorpha and gerromorpha) fauna of greek holiday islands (rhodes, crete and corfu) with first records of three species from europe and greece.a comprehensive survey on aquatic and semiaquatic bugs (heteroptera: nepomorpha and gerromorpha) of three greek holiday islands, rhodes, crete and corfu, was conducted from 2007 to 2010 at 237 localities. in this paper, hundreds of detailed records for 30 taxa in nine families are given. the occurrences of rhagovelia infernalis africana lundblad, 1936 and velia mariae tamanini, 1971 are confirmed and recorded for the first time from europe sensu stricto. additionally, some notes on morphology, t ...201728187549
