Possible Logistic and Sociodemographyc Factors on Breast Cancer Screening in Turkey: Lessons from a Women's Health Project in Mersin Province.Mortality from breast cancer is decreasing partly owing to early detection. In Mersin province in our country, local health authorities launched an education program on sexual diseases and breast cancer early detection for women over 15 years of age. After the educational session, clinical breast examination was offered by a nurse or physician, and if suspicious they were recommended to apply a specialist for further examination. Here, we report the results on those women with abnormal clinical ...201121976034

science as an ally of religion: a muslim appropriation of 'the conflict thesis'.john w. draper's history of the conflict between religion and science (1874) is commonly regarded as the manifesto of the 'conflict thesis'. the superficiality of this thesis has been demonstrated in recent studies, but to read draper's work only as a text on 'science versus religion' is to miss half of its significance, as it also involved evaluations of individual religions with respect to their attitudes towards science. due to draper's favourable remarks on islam, the ottoman author ahmed mi ...201121879604

Determining Nurse-Midwives' Knowledge of the Pap-Smear Test and their Rate of Being Tested in Turkey. Background: Cervical cancer is one of the most common causes of cancer mortality among women worldwide, but actually is largely preventable. The practice of Pap smear testing (PST) needs to be expanded in order to diagnose cervical cancer at an early stage and thus reduce the burden this women's health problem brings to the society. Effective public education is therefore crucial. Determining the knowledge and practice of nurses in this field will help plan their training and develop the necessa ...201121875296
Genetic analysis of survival and fitness in turkeys with multiple-trait animal models.Genetic parameters for production, survival, and structural fitness traits recorded in pedigreed turkey sire and dam parental lines from a nucleus breeding program were estimated with multiple-trait animal models. Survival and conformation traits were scored in binary terms of health, where 0 = died or affected, and 1 = survived or healthy. Walking ability at 20 wk was subjectively scored from 1 (poor) to 6 (excellent). Body weights and egg production displayed moderate heritability (h(2) = 0.18 ...201122010232
neolithic patrilineal signals indicate that the armenian plateau was repopulated by agriculturalists.armenia, situated between the black and caspian seas, lies at the junction of turkey, iran, georgia, azerbaijan and former mesopotamia. this geographic position made it a potential contact zone between eastern and western civilizations. in this investigation, we assess y-chromosomal diversity in four geographically distinct populations that represent the extent of historical armenia. we find a striking prominence of haplogroups previously implicated with the agricultural revolution in the near e ...201122085901

Polymorphism in the acetylcholinesterase gene of Musca domestica L. field populations in Turkey.Acetylcholinesterase (AChE), encoded by the Ace gene, is the primary target of organophosphates (OPs) and carbamates (CBs) in insects. Ace mutations have been identified in OP and CB resistant strains of Musca domestica. In this study, the Ace gene was partially amplified and sequenced at amino acid positions 260, 342, and 407 to determine the frequencies of these mutations in housefly samples collected from farms and garbage disposal sites of 16 provinces in the Aegean and Mediterranean regions ...201122129396

28-day oral safety evaluation of extracellular polysaccharopeptides produced in submerged culture from the turkey tail medicinal mushroom Trametes versicolor (L.:Fr.) Pilát LH-1 in mice.Turkey tail medicinal mushroom, Trametes versicolor (TV), is a species with a variety of pharmacological activities. Its intracellular polysaccharopeptides are widely commercialized. Recently, we found a novel TV strain LH-1 in Taiwan and demonstrated that the extracellular polysaccharopeptide (ePSP) of LH-1 obtained from submerged culture exhibits significant immunomodulatory activity. In this in vivo study, we further evaluated the safety of orally administered LH-1 ePSP using both male and fe ...201122135874
Evidence for differing evolutionary dynamics of A/H5N1 viruses among countries applying or not applying avian influenza vaccination in poultry.Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 (clade 2.2) was introduced into Egypt in early 2006. Despite the control measures taken, including mass vaccination of poultry, the virus rapidly spread among commercial and backyard flocks. Since the initial outbreaks, the virus in Egypt has evolved into a third order clade (clade 2.2.1) and diverged into antigenically and genetically distinct subclades. To better understand the dynamics of HPAI H5N1 evolution in countries that differ in vaccination ...201122001877

Comparison of Quantiferon-TB Gold Test and Tuberculin Skin Test for the identification of Latent Mycobacterium Tuberculosis infection in Lupus patients. The tuberculin skin test (TST) has low sensitivity for the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB). QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT-G) is an IFN-gamma-release assay that measures the release of interferon-gamma after stimulation in vitro by Mycobacterium tuberculosis antigens using ELISA. The main advantage of this assay compared with TST is the lack of cross-reaction with Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) as well as most of non-tuberculous mycobacteria. The aim of our study is to compare QFT-G with TST for the de ...201122140142
A turkey rhinotracheitis outbreak caused by the environmental spread of a vaccine-derived avian metapneumovirus.Avian metapneumovirus (aMPV) subtype A was isolated from 7-week-old turkeys showing respiratory disease typical of turkey rhinotracheitis. Comparison of the virus sequence with previously determined vaccine marker sequences showed that the virulent virus had originated from a licensed live subtype A aMPV vaccine. The vaccine had neither been in use on the farm within a period of at least 6 months nor had it been used on farms within a distance of approximately 5 km. Isolation of the virus and ex ...201121854180
the pied crow (corvus albus) is insensitive to diclofenac at concentrations present in carrion.diclofenac, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (nsaid), kills vultures (gyps spp.) that consume tainted carcasses. as a result, vulture populations in india, nepal, and pakistan have been devastated. studies on meloxicam and ketoprofen demonstrated that the toxicity of the nsaids is unpredictable, thereby necessitating individual testing of all available nsaids. because it is no longer practical to use vultures for toxicity testing, we evaluated the pied crow (corvus albus) as a model. pied c ...201122102664

molecular cloning and tissue-specific expression of toll-like receptor 5 gene from turkeys.toll-like receptors (tlrs), a family of transmembrane and cytosolic proteins, detect microbial patterns, initiating innate immune responses in various organisms. although they are abundant, genetic characterization and functional differences of tlrs in economically important avian species such as chickens and turkeys have not been investigated in detail. in this study, the putative tlr5 coding region from turkey genome was sequenced, and its homology to other vertebrate species was analyzed. sec ...201122017051
