[screening for tetracyclic benzodiazepines using emit-st (benzodiazepines) and tdx].the article reports threshold ranges and detection limits for the screening of tetracyclic benzodiazepines (adinazolam, alprazolam, brotizolam, estazolam, loprazolam, midazolam, triazolam and many metabolites) using the emit-st and tdx system (fpia). in most cases, the cross reactivities of the two systems are comparable, but there are also remarkable differences. detection limits are mainly in the range between 0.2 and 0.5 mg/l but, in some cases, the limits are also considerably higher. the wi ...20102893500
major liver resection: perioperative course and management.this report investigates the perioperative course in 81 consecutive major liver resections, performed mainly because of primary liver cancer or colorectal liver secondaries. the liver was resected transabdominally with or without prior ligation of hilar structures. intravenous nutrition consisted of 10% dextrose alone and was started preoperatively. albumin or plasma was used rarely and only in conjunction with massive intraoperative transfusion of blood. major complications, including four oper ...20103014674
immunohistochemical localization of renin in end-stage kidneys.hypertension in chronic renal failure is usually due to excessive accumulation of salt and water. in some cases, sodium and volume depletion by dialysis fail to reduce the high bp, and plasma renin activity tends to be higher. we performed a semiquantitative analysis of the immunohistochemical distribution of renin in the kidneys of ten patients with end-stage renal disease and hypertension using a specific antihuman renin antibody and a peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique on paraffin sections o ...20103046341

adenoid cystic carcinoma of the nasopharynx after previous adenoid irradiation.in 1978, pratt challenged the otolaryngology community to identify an incidence of malignancy in individuals who have previously received radium therapy to the nasopharyngeal lymphoid tissues. this case report is a direct response to that quest and presents a well documented adenoid cystic carcinoma evolving 23 years after radium applicator treatment to the fossa of rosenmuller. although a cause-and-effect relationship cannot be scientifically proven, the case history raises several important qu ...20102984492

[excision of colorectal cancers: what can be expected of lymph node excision?].we report a series of 413 patients with colo-rectal adenocarcinoma. 328 had a curative resection and 277 of them had elective lymphadenectomy; 51 had no lymphadenectomy because of either age or poor general status. operative morbidity and mortality were not increased by lymphadenectomy. survival was related to the lymph node involvement: 70.6% 5 year survival in patients without lymph node metastases, 49.3% 5 year survival in patients with lymph node metastases (p less than 0.001). however lymph ...20102930148

picosecond transient absorption study of photodissociated carboxy hemoglobin and myoglobin.the optical transient absorption spectra at 30 ps and 6.5 ns after photolysis are compared for both carboxy hemoglobin (hbco) and carboxy myoglobin (mbco). both 355- and 532-nm excitation pulses were used. in all cases the shapes of the optical difference spectra thus generated are stationary over the complete time-scale studied. the photolysis spectra for mbco are not significantly different from the equilibrium difference spectra generated on the same picosecond spectrometer when measured to a ...20113207839

the value of second-look laparotomy in ovarian cancer.since there is no reliable noninvasive way of establishing status of disease in ovarian cancer patients, second-look laparotomy has become an accepted part of the management of these patients. in women with no clinical evidence of disease who undergo laparotomy, more than half are found to have cancer. the operation is used following a planned program of chemotherapy when the physician is faced with a dilemma: stop chemo and run the risk of recurrence or continue and increase the risk of toxicit ...20113079491

susceptibility patterns of coagulase-negative staphylococci to several newer antimicrobial agents in comparison with vancomycin and oxacillin.coagulase-negative staphylococci (cons) have emerged as important nosocomial pathogens. cons resistance to meticillin and other semisynthetic penicillins is now common. elevated vancomycin minimal inhibitory concentrations (mics) have been reported and are associated with worse treatment outcomes. several newer antibiotics have recently become available for the treatment of gram-positive infections. the purpose of this study was to assess the in vitro activity of telavancin, daptomycin, linezoli ...201121295951
analysis of staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec in staphylococcus haemolyticus and staphylococcus sciuri: identification of a novel ccr gene complex with a newly identified ccra allotype (ccra7).methicillin resistance in staphylococci is conferred by the acquisition in its chromosome of the meca gene, which is located on a mobile genetic element called staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (sccmec). genetic type of sccmec is defined by combination of mec gene complex class and cassette chromosome recombinase gene (ccr) allotype. in this study, we analyzed genetic diversity of the sccmec in 11 staphylococcus haemolyticus strains and a staphylococcus sciuri strain, which were recently is ...201121388304

catalase-positive cocci in fermented sausage: variability due to different pork breeds, breeding systems and sausage production technology.the aim of this study was to compare the ecology of catalase-positive cocci (cpc) present in traditional fermented sausages produced using different breeds of pork, each of which was raised in two different environments and processed using two different technologies. semi-quantitative molecular methods were used to determine bacterial identities. almost all fermentations were characterised by a significant increase in cpc during the first few days of fermentation, reaching values of 10(5)-10(6)  ...201222202871
Staphylococcus haemolyticus as an Important Hospital Pathogen and Carrier of Methicillin Resistance Genes.Phenotypic and molecular methods were used to characterize the antibiotic resistance of 64 clinical isolates of Staphylococcus haemolyticus. By PCR of the mecA gene, 87% were found to be methicillin resistant. Approximately 55% harbored staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec element (SCCmec) type V, and only one SCCmec type IV. Many isolates (75%) displayed multiresistance, and pulsotype analysis showed a high diversity.201221976766
fine needle aspiration cytology of primary bone lesions.fine needle aspiration (fna) cytologic findings were compared with the results of conventional histology in a series of primary bone lesions to determine the diagnostic accuracy of fna cytology. the series included 12 osteogenic sarcomas, 4 ewing's sarcomas, 3 chordomas, 3 myelomas, 2 chondrosarcomas, 2 undifferentiated sarcomas and 1 case each of normal bone and marrow elements, lymphoma and giant-cell tumor. all aspirates yielded adequate material for smear diagnosis, and all 29 cases were cor ...20123469851

the role of the priming fluid in the metabolic response to cardiopulmonary bypass in children of less than 15 kg body weight undergoing open-heart surgery.the major metabolic response to open-heart surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass has been shown in adults to be modified by the components of the pump priming fluid. this effect is likely to be more significant in children. data on 29 children less than 15 kg body weight are presented. patients were randomised to receive a prime containing one of three crystalloid priming fluids: 100% hartmann's (h), 50% hartmann's + 50% 5%-dextrose (hd), or 100% plasmalyte 148 (p). the remainder of the prime was ...20123388405
[ergosterol as a measure of fungus growth in fodder. i. ergosterol content of grain].ergosterol was determined as a chemical indicator of fungal biomass in wheat (w), barley (b), oats (o), and grain corn (c). in samples selected by microscopy and odour as an indicator of good mycological quality the following contents (mg/kg dry matter) were found: 1.96 +/- 0.72 (w), 2.43 +/- 0.82 (b), 2.42 +/- 1.4 (o), 0.61 +/- 0.37 (c). in cereals from farms in baden-württemberg (frg) which were not selected by microscopy and odour 5.8 +/- 3.8 (w), 5.8 +/- 2.0 (b), 15.8 +/- 9.0 (o) mg/kg (year ...20123421835
